A case of David Vs Goliath
1. President Moi and by extension Gideon Moi.- President Moi''s dalliance with Ruto came when Moi recruited a young university student Ruto to yk92 the notorious organization that was meant to galvanize the youth vote for Moi's 1992 re-election campaign. Unbeknownst to Moi , Ruto would become a thorn in the flesh whom Moi frowned on, for becoming too ambitious in assuming the Kalenjin mantle even when Moi was President, especially during Moi's second last term in which Ruto sensed an opening in that Moi was becoming ever unpopular and Moi's re-election was becoming even more unviable.
Having a keen eye into the future, Ruto sensed this vulnerability in Moi's re-election and who would take over the kalenjin king pin mantle, a vaccuum that needed to be filled after Moi leaves the scene.
Moi's choice was his favorite son Gideon. Ruto started making headwind in the rift valley out doing Gideon Moi. Moi wanted Gideon to Inherit the kalenjin King pin. Ruto had other ideas he would have none of it, of inherited King Pins. Gideon was not like his father nor like Ruto. Moi was a charismatic poltician. He relished addressing crowds, meeting the people. Infact there was hardly a week that passed that Moi never attended a public rally and Ruto took notes from the father of politics, watching the master of politics traverse the entire country addressing rally after rally. These rally's were welcomed by all those who got a chance to see a president come to their village and address them, whom they probably would never see in their life time and thus it created bonds with the people. Ruto the ever crafty politician took note and replicated the same.
For Ruto to win the election he knew he needed the Mountain folk on his side. The "tanga tangaring " Ruto did especially in the Mountain was a strategic move by Ruto to get to know the people and the people to get to know him and lasting bonds were created with the Mountain folk that would later propell him to become the President-Elect.
Gideon is not a polished retail politician Like his father and Ruto, both who cherish or never shy away getting into the muck of things galvanizing crowds. Gideon's comfort level is more of a cooperate politician making board room deals in the senate committees and in hotel lobby rooms as he did when he brought kalonzo into Azimio. Ruto the ever ambitious, restless, agile, pacer, composed, marathoner is a different animal. There has never been a public podium that Ruto never liked. He relishes in combat public politics where he is at his best. Continued
Best example was the Bomas BBI ceremony meant to galvanize support from the political class. In attendance was the president, Rutos nemesis Raila and all of who is who in Kenyan politics, including his new compatriots Mudavadi and Wetengula who were all for BBI, but for one defiant Ruto. The Bomas meet was choreographed and scripted to show support for BBI. When Ruto took to the podium he was jeered, ridiculed, made fun off to the point the crowd became riotous, it resembled scenes of a hanging where all were in agreement that the person was guilty and the act must go on. But Ruto knowing he was playing on enemy ground, was calm, reasoning, infact if it was not for the mob mentality, Ruto was making sense. But in a situation like that, infront of the President and a crowd whipped up by pro BBI politicians who spoke before Ruto to reject anyone who spoke against BBI, Ruto had an uphill task but stood his ground. Not many politicians would have dared go against the wave for BBI in Bomas in the presence of the President and defer. But Ruto when push comes to shove stood his ground in defiance but in a low key, calm manner calling for reason and dialogue. But the dye had been cast in Bomas in favor of BBI. No dialogue, no reasoning and no capitulating to those who were perceived to be against BBI. But Ruto got his messege through and had the last laugh. BBI was dead as a dodo. continued
2. Uhuru- Ruto went to Uhuru's bedroom (central Kenya) and convinced Uhuru's people to vote for him amidst Uhuru's strong admonition for his people to look towards the lake but Uhuru"s people were not convinced and stuck with Ruto. Uhuru tried to convince his people that he wont turn over the govt to thieves was his message to his people. But his people brushed off the claims that Ruto is a thief because since the beginning of Uhuru's presidency corruption was out of control and the President seemed to be reluctant to do anything about it but lament about it. Scandals involving Uhuru's family (pandora papers , mobile clinics) and close associates (Kemsa) and the families checkered past since attainment of Kenya's Independence on wealth accumulation were contradicting the message of Ruto being a thief, while the genesis of thieving using ones position in govt to get rich has a history going back to Uhurus father. It was like pointing one finger at Ruto but four fingers pointing at the accuser Uhuru himself (Uhuru). So that tag as ruto as a thief would not fly with the Mt. folk.
It was as if the people were saying well you are all thieves but we like our thief better because his message resonets with us and anyway if he was a thief, he did not come from a dynasty family more like majority of us hustlers. Thus Rutos thieving was seen as someone just trying to hustle and he became successful at it. And the messege was if they worked hard they could attain the same wealth status like hom from a hustler to riches.
It was believed Uhuru being the Kikuyu spokes person, that his word or directions were cast in stone and his people would follow but this was not to be the case. To add insult to injury, Kiambu county Uhuru's back yard and post Presidency retirement home, cast the most votes out of all counties in Kenya for Ruto. This was a total rejection of Uhuru's wishes for his people to cast their vote for Raila. continued
3. Raila-After Ruto was sidelined by Uhuru, Ruto turned the tables on Raila by casting himself as the outsider candidate pulling the reformist rug off of Raila's feet. Ruto presented himself as the man of the people who cares about the hoi poi , even though he was part of the govt that people blamed for all their problems. Ruto took advantage of Uhuru's dalliance with Raila and subsequent sidelining from govt and presented himself as the outsider, Ruto Vs the Dynasties, Hustlers Vs Dynasties, the change we need by casting aspersions on the govt whenever it suited him.
For decades, Ruto was part of the system the so called deep state, who resisted any progressive change, even voted against change the constitution and was always on the side of anti-reformists.
Ruto's rise to power was as a result of the status quo/anti reformist agenda which suited him then because it benefited him going back to his relationship with Moi who resisted any change . Moi made Ruto .
Fast foward, Ruto being a fast learner and a student of politics over the years, sensed that the status quo of dynasties was resonating with the people and becoming unsustainable and unpopular in these times thus the Hustler VS Dynasties comparisons needed to be weaponized. The people were getting restless blaming their misfortunes on govt policies that never favored them but the dynasties. Having being rejected by Uhuru as the Presidential standard bearer of their party Jubilee , Ruto cleverly blamed his demise not on Uhuru directly but on his potential Presidential competitor Raila, accusing him of trying to usurp his place in govt and destabalizing the balance of power whereby Ruto would take a back seat and play second fiddle to him.
Ruto smelt a rat, he saw Uhuru's and Raila's hand in sidelining him and he quickly changed the narrative of two dynasties coming together to usurp power to form the next govt. Rutos message to the people was because he did not come from a pedigree of a dynasty, he would rather be on the side of the suffering people and there was born the hustler candidate, the mama mboga, the jua kali and boda boda favorite son. (Agility when its called for).
All the while Ruto was casting Raila as a govt project the same very govt that Ruto served was now Raila's govt that has made life difficult for the people and Raila was just an extension of the govt even though he Raila was never in govt like Ruto who served as DP for 9yrs and never quitting because of his disaffection with the current govt he serves.
Ruto played the victim card to endear himself to the common folk and coined the word the "Hustler" which he associated himself with and millions resonated with the word. Ruto now became the hustler and the victim that the common folk could identify with as they were also hustlers and victims of a system that does not work for them. We are all victims of a system that discriminates against folk who do not belong to the dynasty class. i came from humble beginings and raised myself by my own boot straps selling eggs just like you . This narrative of Raila belonging to a dynasty, a govt project , a person being pushed down our throats and imposed up on us stuck. Raila was seen as part of the deep state. 4. The Deep state- From the Presidency all the way down to the village chief is the state machinery that has come to be known as the deep state. Anyone with political ambitions who is not part of the deep state in Kenya, has basically no chance of winning the Presidency without the node of the deep state though it was thought. But Ruto disabused that notion that without the backing of the deep state you can not win the Presidency. hmmmm!!!.( But Ruto was still part of the deep state for 9 yrs may be that's why he never quit being DP (food for thought).
With all the trappings of the deep state on Raila's side, It was a forgone conclusion that victory was just a matter of announcing Raila's win by Chebukati according to Azimio. On election day, Azimio made a victory lap at KICC and displayed acts of bravado, shameless confidence, giving the impression that the election was already won by their side. They said they had the numbers, they had the data in front of them and that what was left was for Chebukati to announce them the winners because they had the same numbers and data IEBC had and it was just for IEBC to announce them the winner. They said they could announce themselves the winners but for protocal, legal and constitutional reasons they will wait. But Victory was a forgone conclusion. Take that to the bank. Just like you know the sky is going to be blue the next day.
Never have i seen such bravado in a Presidential contest. But as the saying goes " don't count your chickens before they hatch". Evidently Azimio never had that saying. But Ruto too had something to say after IEBC announced the results. Ruto had the last laugh. The End
