Bosch Steam Oven Review

  • We recently purchased a Bosch steam oven combo unit model number HSLP751UC. This is a review of our unit. We think we got a defective unit, and Bosch has been giving us a run around since purchase. However, even more significant, we believe that these steam ovens have a fundamental flaw that needs to be fixed in all shipping models. The unit is programmed in a way so that when using the descaling mode, or steam clean mode, the the door can only remain open for approx 30 sec to clean the unit and remove boiling water from the evaporator dish before rinse cycle for this mode starts. This is very dangerous and can lead to burns. Bosch has not been able to give us a satisfactory answer, and have told us that the unit is working as designed. Watch the video for details.
    Update: October 18, 2015
Bosch replaced our oven, and the new one steams well. However, the time to clean a hot oven in 30 seconds when running the steam clean or descale cycle still persists. We have been told - "the oven is working as designed" for this issue!

You need to use DISTILLED water. That is really the only water with 0 total dissolved solids (TDS), which is what scale is. Next closest is reverse osmosis, but there will still be a measurable TDS. In the video you are using "Spring Water," that usually has a pretty high TDS content which is what gives spring water the flavor that people seek.

The manual of these machines (I don't remember if Bosch says it specifically. I've seen it mentioned in other brand's manuals) do NOT use distilled water. When I look it up, I think it is because you need some conductivity for water level sensor to work. That being said, I agree, distilled water is the only water that does not have scale. It is just a fact of physics (not Bosch's fault in that regard). However, I guess it just means owner will need to think about it before they buy it.

We have also had major problems with our steam oven. We installed the first unit in Feb 2017 and had problems where it erred out and started cycling through the programs (euro convection then descale then back to steam). The steam keeps going into the control panel and at one point during repair for the first oven it was escaping into our cabinet. It is now July 2017 and we are still battling with our Bosch steam oven, except this is our third and final attempt. Haven't been able to use this oven without getting an error every time. Bosch helpline is useless as well. The repair man from our appliance store called and asked for parts at least twice and the second time Bosch didn't send the part he requested, and the third call Ron tried to describe what he was looking for because the part isn't numbered as a replacement part. So that led to the first replacement. Second unit did the same thing. Another unit was requested. Now we have the third unit which isn't working either. All 3 did the same thing. Also had the scaling problem and that was from 7 minutes of use in the first unit. The manuals for most of the steam ovens say not to use distilled water because the units need the minerals found in drinking water. Overall this has been very frustrating, wish we saw this video before we purchased the Bosch units. Do not buy Bosch!

I have this unit and I LOVE it! It was affordable for me and I have no regrets. The scaling is not a issue for me because I use DISTILLED water not SPRING Water! I also add 15 minutes to actually allow the oven to get to cooking temperature. The cooking time was pretty accurate for us when the temperature was reached. I think your unit way not have been installed right. I do not have water in the door nor do I have condensation on the unit on the outside. Periodic steam release is normal from the vent. I was disappointed like you not having information on cooking and recipes and ideas from Bosch on how to use the unit. I have had to use trial and error. Hope you get resolution.

We have the exact same unit and don't have steam escaping like that at all. I'd say you have a faulty door but it doesn't sound like Bosch will support you. Also, our food cooks really fast in it so I'd say that confirms that too much steam is escaping to cook it in the designated time.

Fantastic review. The debate below on type of water is interesting. In my research I noticed the wolf steam oven says not to use any type of filtered or distilled water, only tap water. The Miele ovens can be plumbed with a direct water connection. Concerned about the 30 minute run time. Some competing units seem to be in the 50 minute range in the user manual.

For others considering this oven, we have had ours for 4 months now and it is wonderful. I cooked our Thanksgiving turkey in it which turned out amazing and cooked in half the time. The first one we received had a scratch inside and our salesperson had it replaced immediately. We haven't had any issues, scaling, or steam coming out the front. My advice to others is buy from a reputable local store that will help since Bosch service does take longer to respond. And hopefully you have had your oven replaced by now because it looks defective!

I love mine, its a bit quirky to clean but it works great. I have no scale when I use distilled water?

I have owned one of these for nearly a year. The first time I used it to cook a chicken the entire interior stained. It's not grease, it's that the actual metal is stained. Bosch support completely stinks, young people who are not trained answer the line and offer no help at all. Bosch's answer for the problem was "thank you for calling"
I sorely regret owning this, I recommend a double convection oven instead.

My unit is like this one. I filled up water inserted the tank properly but it still say water tank is empty, I pulled and pushed in , sometimes worked sometimes showed empty again. Now not working at all, keep saying the tank is empty. It’s sucks.

Do you like the replaced oven? Does the steam pour out, does it use up the water dutch slower??

Thank you for your review! We just started using this oven and I have a few questions I am hoping you can help answer:
    1. How do you know when descaling is necessary? Is it just based on the descaling prompt message or is there another way to tell that the oven needs to be descaled?
    2. I am worried about starting a descaling cycle since I am worried I won't be able to refill the tank and clean out the water in less then 30 seconds. Do you have a trick for doing it? It seems that if I don't do it, I can't use the appliance until the descaling is done properly.
    3. I use tap water, but have considered using our filtered brita water. The manual says not to use filtered water however. What is your opinion on using filtered water?
Thanks! I hope you are happy with your oven.

    • @joanne5234
      @joanne5234 7 років тому

It will ask you to descale on the prompt. Use it when you get a scale build up. When I use distilled water there is literally no scale.

I'm trying to get info from Bosch about the amount of LIQUID descaler to use to descale? I have the same unit in your video. No response from Bosch.Help?

But absolutly wrong!! This is incorrect information! This is a Steam oven and has a ventilation flap wich is allways closed if you use a steam heating mode. only when you use the ring heater the vetilation flap is open. I know this exactly and this oven is definitly manipulatet. Buy a german model of the steam oven and you will get quality! This one is not an original german oven! This one is shit.

+itsalwaysfake Our oven was a defective piece. Bosch tried to fix the flap (presuming it was stuck open and was letting the steam out), and then changed the "computer" in it. It still did not work. They had to replace the oven. It steams fine, but a few problems still persist. Please see update to my description above.
