Echoing one of the things that Jamey mentioned... putting together the Automa rulebook for Wingspan Asia, so it worked as both a standalone for Asia and a comprehensive rule set for the original Wingspan was one of the more challenging things we've done in our work with Stonemaier.
A fun house rule we have been doing in our playgroup, is add in a token that lets each player refresh the bird offer once (discard all the birds you could draw, and refill). Since we liked that mechanic from the dune expansion so much. Seems to lesson the feel bad moments of not finding birds that match your goals. Anyone else doing something similar?
@@sambo6266 we did each player got 1 refresh of the bird tray whenever they wanted mid game. Allowing the token to be used for the initial hand of birds instead is an interesting idea, we might have to try that.
We definitely run into the ying-yang issue, everyone I introduce this for the first time assumes you can both place on the same spot on the board because ying/yang typically are part of one whole, and tokens wrap together nicely (as you pointed out in the video).
I appreciate the texture of the rulebooks. My question is, why not include new standard goal tiles? I personally think the amount of goal tiles we currently have is fine, but someone pointed this out of Facebook.
We're running thin on new goal tile ideas, and so since we were already including goal tiles for Duet mode in this expansion, we decided to save the remaining ideas for the next 3 expansions. There are some good ideas on BGG that Elizabeth is aware (some that work, others that don't).
@@jameystegmaier this makes sense but i think there are jus tons of goals that are unexplored. in fact the design of the bonus cards allows for a great thread to which explore. food at end of the turn, cards in hand at the end of the turn, etc
Ohh man, the colormatching of the backs of cards brings me back. Used to play a boardgame/TCG mix, x610z, that from what I know was only really played somewhat seriously in the Netherlands in 2 or 3 cities. So I met the designer a few times. But long story short, the early versions had a nearly all black back which apparently is really hard to color match consistently. And being the crafty player I was build a deck around shuffling with a bunch of first edition cards, except for some from high priority cards that I used later editions for so it was relatively easy to spot which cards where which. Won quite a few rounds with that and noted the issue to designer when playing a friendly tournament, and technically wasn't cheating just abusing poor color matching. Later they changed the backs to a grey gradient with more of a design and required opaque sleeves for using cards from earlier editions.
Really astonishing to see how much thought went into every component and also your push for more eco-friendliness! Could you elaborate a bit on the card design for this expansion? Especially since it's so flexible on how you can play it (standalone, with base game + expansions, different modes etc.). How do you keep balance for all these different scenarios?
Elizabeth, the designer, is much better equipped to answer that great question. :) From what I can tell from her process, she uses a big spreadsheet that helps to ensure that the cards are balanced compared to existing birds and that the ratios for the bonus cards remain mostly the same.
Did you consider adding cardboard “walls” to the feeder board (like Dead Reckoning does with their battle board)? This would allow dice to be rolled into the “tray” without falling out.
The original birdfeeder has walls like that, but a 3D structure would not fit into the Wingspan Asia box, so we didn't consider it. We did, however, test it, and in playtesting we found that it was easy to roll the dice near/on the birdfeeder and then place them all on the birdfeeder.
Indeed there are! The plan is to have an expansion for every continent. The remaining continents (in no particular order) are Africa, Latin America, and Antarctica.
Hi Jamie,, thanks for the very thorough video detailing all the rational behinds the production. One thing came to mind when I was watching is that wood isn't always more eco-friendly than plastic. I'm not an expert but from what I learned, with some paints on it, wood may not even be recyclable. Plastic can be recycled with the right process (which many countries may not have it in place). In addition, plastic is generally lighter and may have a lower transport and delivery footprint. I'm not saying B is better than A, but the whole material life cycle is an additional thing worth considering. 🌍
Those are some great points! The big thing about wood isn't where it's going, but rather where it's coming from. Wood is a renewable resource if it's sustainably forested (which our sources are); the components that create plastic are not. Also, while some plastic is recycled and recyclable, nearly 95% of all plastic just ends up in landfills, where (unlike wood) it will not biodegrade.
Hi Jamey, the new expansion looks great! I can’t wait to receive it! I’m really excited for the duet mode and flock mode. I also really like the new player boards. If future expansions don’t need new player boards, would you consider selling some with new landscapes that match future expansions on your store? Maybe double sided with Africa and South America? I would definitely purchase it.
I'm struggling to understand how to find where to place the ying/yang piece on the duet map in the solo mode. I understand the example in the rulebook, how to find where to start on the map, but I do not understand which icons I should be looking at when I am trying to determine the Type Section and Habitat Section. Should I be looking at the exact same icon that was used to determine where to start on the map? Or, do I look at the icons that are to the left of these sections (Type section and Habitat Section) even though those are for rounds 3 and 4 on the card?
To decide where to place the yin/yang pieces on the duet map in solo mode, you look at the icons that are to the left of each of the three sections (Type, Habitat, and Map sections). So, to the left of the Map section for the map; left of the Type section for the type, and left of the Habitat for the habitat.
@@jameystegmaier Ok, thank you so much for clearing that up! I received two Stonemaier games for Christmas and am having a blast playing them! Thanks for all your hard work!

It has the same scoring. The only difference is with Duet, the end of round goals are based upon the Duet map, replacing the end of round goals you may be familiar with. In Duet you also gain points for you largest contiguous group of tokens on the map at the end of the game.
For the yin and yang tokens-have you ever considered having a version where players can occupy the same space to effectively “block” the other player in that space from gaining points for end of round?
We did consider that! But it doesn't work, because part of the design is such that you can see the icon on the space below it for end-of-round goals--you would completely block that icon if both tokens went there.
