    There's something just magical about watching horses get to be horses, outside, with others, being mentally and physically stimulated. I have seen so many horses that get inadequate turnout and the mental toll is so horribly obvious.

    I wish turnout was promoted by 'top' equestrians
    Horses are not tools to win pretty ribbons. They are living beings and should be treated as such.

    This is one of your BEST videos Shelby! Horses NEED to do Horsey-things. Sometimes they just need to BE. Can you imagine the stall bound/show ring Horses - only out to work & perform? No different abuse than Circus Animals. Imagine as a human stuck in a small condo & never let outside... kind of like Covid depression!? 🤯

    So cute. I'm glad you've been so open about the topic of turnout, my horse is out on a large field for most of the day, because that is the set up where I board her. Until I watched your videos and listened to your podcast I never really understood why it was so important. So thanks! ❤

    I did a highschool equestrian team and at one of the shows this girl was talking about how she keeps her horse stalled 24/7 bc he likes it better... I was horrified. Especially cause you could tell the horse would greatly benefit from turnout, he seemed stressed,
    Temperamental and anxious all the time. I don’t understand how people can do that.

    At the barn that I work and ride at, its very unfortunate that because we are in the city, we can't turn our horses out on grass very often since we are also in a flood plane, but our horses are able to get out everyday and run around in the arenas, even if it isn't the best, its better than keeping them inside all the time.

    After switching from a barn that only turned their horses out for 7 hours, to a barn that leaves their horses out for 24/7 (not sure about the winter) i noticed they're all much easier to ride, and they just seem happier. None of them are even close to lazy, except for one.

    Where I live all our horses live out 24/7 unless stabled due to vets orders.
    We don’t really have ‘barns’ like you folks in North America do.
    Racehorses are stabled but even that’s changing, more and more trainers are starting to keep their horses outside in pairs.

It was connected to the barn & had an electric waterer so when youckybour, they never had to go out unless they wanted to.

    My horse gets lots of turnout but unfortunately during our winter it gets very dry, there is no rain for 8 months so water is scarce, and sadly all the grass dies and we have to substitute it with hay and other salts and minerals in their food

    • @Milestone-Equestrian
      @Milestone-Equestrian  3 роки тому +1

      Turnout doesn’t need to be grass so long as they have access to other forages. Most pastures don’t retain nutrient quality over the winter enough to completely make it so horses can go without hay

    • @jenniferlehman2464
      @jenniferlehman2464 3 роки тому +1

      And I don't know about you Shelby, but at the track I've worked at, most "exercise" riders are a lot heavier than jockeys. So on race day, you can if they are used to carrying someone who is maybe 135 to 140 pounds, then they have to carry only 126 pounds, with the horse being conditioned to carry the heavier weight, 126 pounds is nothing compared to their regular exercise rider. How big should the paddock be?

    • @Milestone-Equestrian
      @Milestone-Equestrian  3 роки тому +4

      Ideally as big as possible, typically 1-2 acres per horse if you’re looking to try to preserve the grass for year round or most of the the year use but of course this isn’t possible in a lot of areas. For best results in terms of fulfilment for the horses, the minimum should allow for enough space to at least get in some canter / gallop strides and definitely enough room to trot around and play.
