A couple years ago, sailing out of Naples, I had just gotten back to my cabin after a hot day exploring Pompeii and the Amalfi Coast. As soon as I opened my balcony door, the distinct smell of cigarettes entered the cabin. I'm not shy. I walked out and leaned over the balcony wall to see my neighbor puffing like a chimney.
I said to him, "Hey. You aren't allowed to smoke on your balcony. It's a fire hazard."
His response was, "What? Are you a fireman?"
My reply was, "Yes, as a matter of fact, I am."
    (I'm not a firefighter, BTW) 😉
He muttered something and put it out before walking back inside his cabin. I never saw him again for the rest of the cruise. I would have had no problem reporting him if he had done it again.

My hubby and I were on an Alaska cruise over the summer. The ship offered bumper cars a basketball court, arcades, table top games 3 pools 2 that were covered and more. A large group of young people took to running the halls everyday running up and down the open stairwell and pushing all the buttons on the elevators. This was all day everyday. The last night of our cruise by husband was putting our luggage out into the hallway and almost knocked out one of the kids running by our cabin door. I've never noticed anyone else's balcony light.
Not so much etiquette, but be aware of what direction the ship will be traveling or where the sun will be most prominent. We didn't think about this on our P Canal cruise. It was from San Diego to Ft Lauderdale and since we were traveling SSE for 2/3 of the cruise, after 10a, it was for the most part, unusable. Fortunately it was mostly cloudy going through the canal - not that we spent much time on our balcony then as they opened up access to the bow sections on decks 3, 5, 6 and 7. We were on 8, so we went down to 7 for the lock transfers and such.

This was on the Carnival Breeze and the design of this ship had an open deck below the balcony cabins plus I was down wind. I don’t know if they tried or not because I just decided to go back inside. I’m an always a laidback kind of guy and usually it takes a LOT to really bother me but this did because I couldn’t even enjoy my balcony. This was 6 years ago & it was my last Carnival cruise. I had to address it to the cabin steward on one cruise, it got so bad. He spoke to the offender and it pretty much stopped. Since the Carnival ban on Bluetooth speakers, there has been some chatter on the FB cruise groups I am on about how upset they are about the ban and the best way to smuggle one on board.
As for your tip not to get into arguments with other passengers and let cruise line security handle it, you are 100% correct. I still remember earlier this year about passengers onboard a Carnival vessel bragging on social media about getting a GUN on the ship and having it in their room safe! (But they had open food items confiscated at the terminal). In 2025 Carnival is upping their security regarding excessive drinkers and minors being in adult areas of the ship. 😊

Excellent tips! I’m amazed that people are still smoking on their balconies, and not just cigarettes. Also, don’t put your head around your balcony to look into your neighbor! That was rude! And try not to let the door slam, especially early in the morning and late at night.

I’ve gone off balcony rooms. I was confined to my room with covid. Old couple next door had no sense of self awareness. They’d have loud phone conversations on their balcony on speaker phone. The old guy would sit on the balcony, door open, listening to the tv at full volume. From now on, I’m choosing outside cabins. Far more serenity.

I've always been hesitant to book a balcony cabin for these very reasons. I know it would ruin my trip to smell any type of smoking if I was enjoying quiet time on the balcony and I've just been too afraid to chance it. We book oceanview rooms instead so we can have some light but not all ships have that type of stateroom, unfortunately, so we've had to book an inside cabin instead. Not my favorite but we were still on vacation...😊

I have been on forums where people say that they paid their money and can and will do whatever. Loud music, cigarette smoking, marijuana smoking, loud sex on the balcony. They paid their money and people should mind their business.
I was at a concert at a non-smoking venue a few weeks ago where people lit up a joint and passed it back and forth several times blowing smoke in my face until I tapped the guy and asked him to stop.
The amount of money I paid for this vacation is sizable for me. I’ll have guest service number on the ready to snitch with a quickness. Sadly, society has lost a great deal of respect for others👍🏽

We were on Celebrity in June, around Japan and there was a group of teens who were all over the ship, disrupting all the games in various lounges in the afternoons, and they found someone of age to buy them liquor. On one of our last nights, they had a huge party on their sunset deck. We were on the 7 th deck on the starboard side, and they were on the port side on the 6th deck and they woke us up about 2AM with very loud music and lots of screaming. We didn’t call, but someone must have because the party was broken up. I looked down early the next morning and that deck was littered with food and liquor bottles.

I've stayed only in inside rooms so I haven’t experienced such incidents. But I'm not surprised. Balconies are built to give the illusion of privacy even though they are not private at all. I wonder if better design would be to make the partitions between balconies smaller -- leave more space at both the bottom and top. Build the partition so that when seated one's view of the next balcony is blocked but leave enough ooen space so that one feels the space as public.

UGH.... yelling between cabins....yeah, that would annoy me as well and courtesy, well, it seems, that no longer exists. My last cruise I had cigarette smokers, somehwere around me- others were complaining about this as well, I know this because security came to our door and others as well to try to pinpoint where this was coming from. Not only does this disturb others from the smell but it also a major fire hazard. This should always be reported.

I agree. When I first started cruising, I thought that a balcony would be wonderful. Thankfully I started watching this channel and a couple of others which show the realities of cruising. Of course the other big advantage of booking inside cabins is that they're the cheapest ones on the ship. My cabin is basically for sleeping - if I want the ocean breeze, I'll just go out on deck.

I would say that fellow cruisers ignoring the no smoking rules is the worst for us. We love spending time on our balcony and having smoke - of whatever kind - drifting onto our balcony from the adjacent cabins and decks above, below, and either side, ruins it for us. Unfortunately, we don't feel that the cruise lines do enough, if anything, to enforce those rules.

Smokers on balconies have been thrown off of ships - without any compensation. It usually happens to the first time cruisers who think they can get away with it. Perhaps they can - if they are lucky - at the first time. The second time? Less likely... Third time? You can make winning bets, that they will not finish their cruise on the ship.

My wife and I took our first ever cruise on November 14, 2024 on the Carnival Breeze to celebrate our 37th wedding anniversary. This was needless to say, the worst trip ever. Teenage kids were allowed to roam the ship all hours of the night, people were allowed to smoke any and everything in places other than designated areas. All everyone talked about is how much we would love cruising, and that we would be hooked forever, how wrong they were.

He was screaming obscenities and was so afraid because his "girlfriend" was on the cruise with him and had lied to her husband. You can't make this crap up.
