    One of my fire co. members called to say he had a vehicle on fire in the Weis Markets parking lot.
    He was advised to call 911
    I got him away from the burning vehicle as there was little to be done till the proper dispatched units arrived.
    SFB Engine 11 Arrived and attacked the fire.
    No injuries were reported ...
    A valiant job was done by the police, and bystanders to attempt to extinguish the fire with portable extinguishers.

      Absolutely.... Let the other two guys work the line & nozzle and stand back so you can have situational awareness and proper command. Also the voice in the video about the extinguisher is so correct. I was saying that to myself, stop wasting them. Its burning and those are not going to help it at that point.

    Pound for pound good quality dry chemical is the most powerful agent in portable extinguishers, but as it only inhibits combustion you still have fuel, oxygen and a lot of heat meaning you can get flash back or re-ignition. Also it's difficult to penetrate enclosed spaces, unlike Halon, which was useful as being a vapourising liquid could 'flood' an enclosed space but the semi-liquid nature of discharge meant it wasn't as effected by wind/draughts as CO2. This doesn't make the extinguishing attempts pointless though - even if you can't put it out if you can slow down the spread until a fire engine arrives you reduce the overall fire loss.

    Amazing how many times people try to put out a vehicle fire with a class A-B-C dry chemical extinguisher just spraying it on the outside of the car or into the grille when the fire is under the hood and they can’t get a direct shot at it. I’ve seen it myself.

    I had a car on fire and fire department had a chop saw and made an 8 inch V notch in the hood and cut around the latch and hood was open in seconds. This FD doesn't have a chop saw? Sad when they don't have the tools to do the job, but work with what you got.

    Did you ever actually see a firefighter reach in the drivers door and pull the hood latch open? There's no fire near the drivers door. Watching these fire videos convinces me NOBODY knows how to use a fire extinguisher.

    • @FDNY8231
      @FDNY8231  4 роки тому +5

      I have and in the video there were two of the FF that tried by opening the drivers door (once they got a key) and pulling the handle. The problem is not in the passenger compartment, BUT the ENGINE compartment which is where the latch is actually located at. That cable coming FROM the passenger compartment has a rod in it and that is covered in a plastic coating and connected in the engine compartment to the latch. When the fire in the EC gets hot enough it will result in that plastic melting away from the latch and then the rod is USELESS and will no longer work in most cases. Trying as they did will let you know right away. They could've done this WAY sooner by taking the window BEFORE the fire was too hot then opening the hood and killing the fire. Like you said and I agree that none of them knew how to use the extinguishers properly.

    • @r3tr0nic
      @r3tr0nic 3 роки тому +1

      @@FDNY8231 The windows was exactly what I was going to say. Considering the EC is already pouring so much smoke, it likely is a total loss at least as far as engine is concerned. Smashing the window with the extinguisher and then opening would of been what I'd of done, and would of not been much to the damage cost in grand scheme of things.
      And agreed about the hood cable. It is just like a hand brake wire on a bicycle. Spiral steel wire inside a spiral wrapped steel core, which is then encased in a plastic tube. Once the tube is gone, the spiral outer core collapses when you try to apply tension on the cable.

    • @FDNY8231
      @FDNY8231  3 роки тому

      @@r3tr0nic Agree a LOT cheaper to replace a window than the whole vehicle if they could've got the fire in early stages.

    • @FDNY8231

      I don't know they seemed to be trying to with the extinguishers. Once the engine arrives they have to stretch and get water and that may take a few. This vehicle was not savable from the get go so rolling in spraying water (if they could've done that) would NOT have changed the outcome.
