I just watched Maytime, again. Every time I watch that beautiful, tragic movie. I am moved to describe why Jeanette MacDonald's soprano voice is so lovely. Someone described her voice as "Even though every singer sings with heart, only Jeanette sings with her heart in her throat." " It is her golden throat and the way she pours her heart out from it that the world loves." Also that her voice was a "golden throat" That was her gift. It's why fans love her singing long after her passing. My mother shared Jeanette and Nelson with me 60 years ago and I love their films, their songs, and their love story. A story of star-crossed lovers who were not meant to be together as in Maytime.
All through the movie Jeanette and Nelson seem totally in love whith each other, they don't seem to act at all (don't know all the facts abput their relationship) I always watch this movie with tears in my eyes.
@@TheEicb I finally bought Maytime a few years ago. It really is one of my favorites. I have always have the feeling as I watch it that they are not entirely acting. Their onscreen chemistry is so strong. I have read so much about their own frustrated romance. It was truly heartbreaking.
Oh, I wish I could have met Nelson Eddy! He was very handsome and magnificent! I imagine he’s beside me every day! And his Blonde hair is so nice and thick! His eyes are a very handsome Blue! And he wears a magnificent Blue suit! I just love Nelson Eddy so much! Thank you for posting this magnificent Video!
They are timeless. They were magical! My heart actually aches when I watch them singing with one another. Their talent and love for one another, will last " Until the end of time " ! RIP Nelson and Jeanette. I hope that what you couldn't have here on earth, you are enjoying in heaven, now.
I have been in love with their films and songs since I was in primary school. I remember duetting "Will You Remember" sat at the piano aged about nine with a girl friend of mine. At the time I was a boy soprano and being honest her voice was probably deeper than mine then! Looking back at the memory more or less a decade later (I have recently turned 17) I don't even know how we managed it but we did somehow. Most of my musical school memories were and are built around Nelson Eddy and Jeanette MacDonald. I remember becoming interested in them first when I became an organist and someone requested me to play The Lost Chord and I found an old 78 of Nelson Eddy's version of it. I was six then. And now my love for them and their films have grown so much! They were the best of the 1930s! Especially Jeanette MacDonald. Just the best of best. And Will You Remember from Maytime has forever been my favourite and something that holds many a memory for me! I can't believe I look back and I'm only 17 now! With songs like this, memories just linger around one's mind come what may. Thank you so much for sharing the original recorded version. It is by far the best
Thank you for sharing your story, how delightful to know that as the last of that generation of fans from the the 1930s and 40s are dying out, there are young people still interested in their music! God bless you!
At 89 years old Jeanette & Nelson are still my idols.I watched Maytime in 1937 at nine years old I adored them, still brings tears to my eyes when I hear them sing and that is often,I will never forget them.
And I m 66 and do the same. I watched the movie on tv as a child and was mesmerised. Couldn't find a recording but mother had the music and she taught to play on the piano. I was 6. Unforgettable

I Adore Jeanette and Nelson and this Song and Movie my Mom saw her in person when she was a child said Jeanette was so sweet to her and Beautiful she told me all about her and Nelson, so Handsome! So sad I cry every time I hear the song or see the movie I can sing like her too since I was 4 years old. I watched this movie with my Mom, when I was old enough to see it my mom sang too in plays too.. Will Always Love this Movie and Song and the Actors Forever! Just beautiful Angela. Maytime: Jeanette and Nelson in living color courtesy of the very talented colorist Di Taylor and your wonderful collection of images of springtime flowers surely bring back the nostalgia of this incredible film which both Jeanette and Nelson thought mirrored their own lives and so it was a very poignant love story which not only tugged at their heart strings but also ours. Thanks for sharing this in commemoration of this 1937 blockbuster movie. Jen and Nelson Forever!
Thank you Angela for sharing this Beautiful Song and even though I was not born then I watched it with my mom who saw her in person as a child and she told me of them and how in love they were and how Beautiful Jeanette was and sweet and how Handsome Nelson was!! one of the only movies that brought me to tears ; I haven't seen it since I was in my late teens - {now I'm in my late 70's} - what I remember {the most} is the last scene where Jeanette is an old woman, that the viewer is led to believe has reached the end of her life - & she's leaning back on one of the several beautiful cherry trees that are in full blossom in her garden - & the blossoms are falling as she dreams the music of her great love - then passes on in peace & beauty.

Maytime has been my favourite movie since 1976, when I recorded its entire soundtrack from the TV. I played it over and over again, hundreds of times, and have watched it dozens of times since I got a video copy in the 1980s. It was the worldwide top-grossing film of 1937, and you can easily see why nothing made so much money. Someone said to me a few years ago that it was terribly sad, but I explained that it is the story of a lie, and its destructive effects.

One thing I loved about these great singers singing together is that Nelson Eddy is a baritone , so it wasn't the usual tenor -soprano duet singers getting together.

He was operatic Italian singer!
I have never heard this version and I've been a N&J fan for 20 years! Thank you so much for this! Wherever did you find this? Is there any other surviving music from the first version?? How wonderful!
i wish someone would make a colourised version of the b&w maytime tom
Thomas Coyle i was also thinking about that, Sir:)
Budgets and MGM; it was shot in color (see IMDB) but they scrapped the clips. With technology, there's no reason it can't be done.

I love this song and arranged it for Barbershop Quartet. If interested in hearing it go to Ron James Music here on UA-cam. Thanks! Great song!
You're killing me Angela. I want to watch this movie right now! One of my favorite songs and they do it better than anyone else possibly could. I think about this song often. (are any of those flowers some of yours?)
Justin, the date of the post on maceddy.com was August 31, 2012 ... it is on page 19 of the site. It contains the mp3 of this song/orchestration which you may download I believe.
