Joni's genius is so pure. I adore the studio version because Michael McDonald is the Michael Jordan of background singers. This is a reminder that Joni is the giant. Her vision is the transcendent part. MM is icing.
I don't think this would have stood up during the 80's due to the great changes she made to her music. I think the Good friends was only a natural progression after the music she made in the late 70's .Although this is a better version than the studio version this would have never made it to the charts like the Pop version.
mateuszbak3 There's a recording of a masterclass Joni taught many years ago. During one of the sessions Joni played portions of Paprika Plains, Impossible dreamer, and Dog eat Dog on the piano.
Such a wonderful tune no matter how you slice it. ❤️
Fabulous, just Joni & her piano. Same brilliance in "Man from Mars", demo version.
Exactly what I was just thinking
There's a TINY snippette of this demo at the beginning of the music video for this track!!
what a total treat!

Stravinsky's influence on Joni is so apparent in this demo!
Interesting comment... More explanation, please.
@@MrSteviedan Maybe because of the strong rhythmic drive?
Are there more piano demos from Dog Eat Dog out there?
I like this demo, but prefer the, final version, with the added male voice and layers of instruments added. But this is still good.

Great song though you would never know that in the studio version.
Incredible. ....... I love joni But i ha a Lot of concerns about dog eat dog. But this demo is another story
Agree with phoenixmoon78, this is 10x better than the version where she sang with Michael Mcdonald
I also like the version with McDonald
Mare Cee She should've done this demo version with Michael...it would be heaven...sort of an alternative version...

I love Ms. Joni Mitchell, her voice is like know other, it pure and so real and she takes you in another place that you can only go with her.
This version is beautiful and I can clearly hear what she is singing. Thank you sharing.
So much better than the studio version.
80s production ruined many a decent song.
Very often I prefer preliminary sketches to final paintings: in the sketches much remains open, in the paintings it's all filled in.
the piano-and-voice versions of Dog Eat Dog, Impossible Dreamer and Good Friends are so superior to the studio versions.
+nohaylamujer Where did you hear Impossible Dreamer piano version?

+nohaylamujer is it on UA-cam?
I'm not sure...

I hope this will be released as part of the series of boxed sets that are coming out. Also the Hissing of Summer Lawns demos which are just gorgeous.
It was released on The Complete Geffen Recordings boxed set in 2003.
