    I`m self teaching myself web development. I have a job working overnight which I don't like it and neither my wife . I'm 28yrs. So development it`s the only way I can get a job with a good pay, benefits and it`s not hard labor.
    Right now, I`m struggling with javascript. I guess I will go back to html and css and master those skills first. i`m only 3 months studying. But I can't wait to get a job, so maybe that's the reason I`m rushing to learn everything at once. Gonna take a step back and go back to the basics. Thanks for all the info!

      Your situation sounds very similar to how my situation was and trust me, just stick with it. Take your time and don't rush things, instead set yourself up to make getting your first job easier.
      If you haven't created anything on your own yet and your goal is to get a job as a web dev start with a portfolio. Doesn't matter if you don't have anything to add to it as far as work goes, just build a basic portfolio. Once you have a basic portfolio start building things or working on projects and add them to your portfolio, your portfolio will grow as you grow. This will help you once you're ready to start applying for jobs.
      Here's some good projects for building basic html and css skills that are free www.freecodecamp.org/learn/responsive-web-design/responsive-web-design-projects/

    In some ways, it makes sense to teach yourself an "easier" language and start with HTML, CSS, or Python because you can actually learn them faster. You could spend a year trying to learn C++, but it's going to be a lot harder to compete with people for a junior developer position because being proficient in those languages just takes more time.

    • @atetraxx
      @atetraxx 3 місяці тому

      Disagree. There are less c++ devs. If you know c++ pretty well then you'll get a job much faster than knowing html css.

    That's how I am with JS. Each time I try to move on to something like php, NodeJs, etc. and I just get really frustrated with having to figure out the environment and installation stuff. I just end up going back to JS and trying to figure out new things through vanilla JS.
    I'm glad to hear this, though, because I have been working on my CSS lately picking up Grid and learning to make my code more presentable and viewable on different sized screens.

    • @DorianDevelops
      @DorianDevelops  4 роки тому +4

      Stick with vanilla JS until you feel comfortable and then learn some ES6 syntax once you got that pick up a frontend framework or focus on Node if you want to learn backend server side programming. That way you only need to learn javascript and that will set you up real nice!

      @@DorianDevelops I thought ES6 was included in vanilla JS. They include that in the Sololearn site now. (Sololearn also includes a bunch of new topics from jQuery, React/Redux, Angular/NestJs, C++, Ruby, Python, PHP, etc. ....) I can use classes/methods, ES6 variables, loops and objects. Probably won't get into modules and destructuring until my third version of the browser game. I seen that FCC has a good amount of material on those subjects. And a lot on the data side, too. I have a basic understanding of jQuery, but I will look the React and Redux stuff on FCC. That really turned out to be the perfect find for me. Exactly what I needed at this stage. Thx again for the recommendation.

    • @DorianDevelops
      @DorianDevelops  4 роки тому +2

      @@jackietate4047 In many cases es6 is going to be considered vanilla but sometimes vanilla js can mean older js non es6 without arrow functions, const, let, template literals, etc. If you're already familiar with es6 and from what you're saying you've studied, you might be better off jumping right into the projects on FCC and try to start building some of those that FCC has. Honestly go down their list and you should be good to go. Side note if you plan on building projects you should learn git and create a github or gitlab account to commit your code and build up your github/gitlab account with the projects you're working on because employers will look at that along with your portfolio.

      @@DorianDevelops I tried GitHub when I first started and it was really confusing. I will try it again now that I have some experience with messing with IDEs and stuff. Because, that is my main focus right now (my project).
      My goal for the project wasn't really to get a job, but to use it for a college application. I am trying to teach myself programming, but I intend to go to college for law. I probably won't be able to get a good job as a lawyer and maybe not even be able to make it past the Barr because of my criminal record. So, I came up with the idea of learning web development so that I can bypass both and work by running a legal resource website designed to help people represent themselves pro se.

      I did a volunteer dev job for a little while when I was first starting out. Just make sure to not get taken advantage of, and drop it if it's not helping you with what you want to learn.
      Remember with volunteer work and unpaid internships many times it's cheap companies looking to get free labor.
      If I had to do it all over again I would focus on 1. building my own projects, 2. contribute to open source projects, or 3. freelance work.
      Also with the interviews don't sweat them too much just keep working on your portfolio and resume and keep applying.
      I dropped out of high school at 9th grade and have a GED.
      You can do it!

      I know it's hard but whatever you do, do not give up. If you're getting interviews, that's better than a lot of people who don't even get a phone call.
      Take the volunteer job but don't let it get in the way of your progress. Make sure it benefits YOU and do not get taken advantage of.
      I was in you shoes once, second guessing if development was even for me, doubting if I'd ever get a job, thinking I would need to go back to school and feeling like all the months I spent teaching myself was a waste of time.
      Just push through it, trust me. You'd hate to quit when you're this close.
      Once covid-19 is over you should check for a developer meet up in your area. It's good to surround yourself with like minded individuals who have experience in what you're doing.

    I am now 5 months learning HTML, CSS and JavaScript. I am having a really hard time mastering CSS-flexbox and grid and other things about CSS. Every time I create my page layout and try to create a clone of a website, I could never get it too align properly similar to the website page I am trying to copy. My layout is not properly aligned similarly to the site. I am unable to clone the exact side boxes of the page and I don't know many things like creating shadows under the object of the button or the hover state of the button either. what is your technique for getting really good with CSS? Were there sites you found which were helpful? Did you try to clone a website to improve your skills? Did you make small components of a web page? Any experience you could share would be valuable, I know I am asking a mouth full, but CSS is really frustrating, and I am getting frustrated trying to learn it. @DevlogBill 2 роки тому

      @@warpeace8978 Well I am getting a little bit better. I think in my case I don't know about your situation. I eventually found out by using the Odin Project that I never learned something called Position. Position helps you to align your box object properly on the browser. Also, I realized too that I was learning flex box and grid at the same time which made things much harder for learning how to size up your box models along side the page. Also, different elements behave differently. For example inline elements behave differently from blocked items. Also, by default the page is automatically displayed as blocked or you can also say static.
      Look up Position and flex box will make your life much easier and don't worry about tables and floats, they are still used but have been replaced by things like flex box and position. I bought an outdated book and learned those things first which I never had to, but it is still good to know. Hope this helps. I am still struggling but within a month I think I improved a lot because I work on it everyday and I still do along side JavaScript now. Wish you the best man.

    I am currently studying in 7th grade and my school had started Introducing html to children from grade 5th, I got into that school in 6th grade and was surprised to see that they teach html bc most schools in my country dont do it, after my first class I knew that I was gonna like html since it rlly was fun! I know a little bit of basic css but I hope that I can be better at it, you video rlly helped me boost my confidence of learning html and css in the future, because I thought html and css would not be enough in the future to get a job and stuff. Anyways thanks and good video 👍👍

    I would laugh my ass of if I got paid 80k per year for writing HTML and CSS. Though with the current inflation levels lol but still

    Dorian, how are you doing? I got a question about SASS, is SASS like bootstrap or tailwind? Also, when should I begin learning SASS? I already know HTML very well, I know CSS flexbox decently. I know a decent amount of flexbox and position. and I am great at little things like creating your own variables with :root {} and small things like background-color: color: font-family; font-size; CSS:opacity {} and some other minor things like class and ID. I think I am decent at these things so far but I know I got more to learn. I don't know @media Query let and I don't know animations and I kind of suck at responsive design. Should I learn SASS or maybe tailwind now? or should I master those things which I've mentioned I either don't know or am weak at? What is your recommendation, thanks Dorian!

      In my learning, I realized that its better to learn CSS, creating your own templates etc. Afterwards, moving to Tailwind and Boostrap will becoming much much easier to be honest.

      @@blasiomuhinda old post. Got decent with the css. But I am primarily focused on backend so I am not too concerned with CSS now, but thank you.
