I love your content, it never gets boring, not like so many other guys on youtube who do same old same old every day. So Wes, a thumps up and thanks a lot. You made my day. I really needed that one after fighting bureaucracy all day to day just helping some Ukrainians find home (a real PITA) and work (easy, when the permit finally gets through).
Wes, I love the shorts! They are hilarious. I like some of the shorts of other content creators more than their usual content, but I dig all of your content formats.
Looks like this is turning out to be a pretty big project...money, time, and labor. However, just think about how much you are learning lol! Love your channel Wes. Ever entertaining, AND I usually learn something. Thanks!
And there's me thinking that was perfectly normal all these years...dang, so you telling me I need new shocks now Wes? That'll be just fine...nope, no it won't 🤣👍
It's not bad till you notice its riding kinda weird and notice it's completely disappeared. True story, my 94 silverado was riding the wave on driver side and I noticed my entire strut had fallen through and disappeared only the spring was left.
I have a cheap Chinese quad bike. I’m always buying or making bits for it. Looks like yours wins though. Buy another one for spares then weld the two together for a side by side. :)
Mechanical know-how makes quick work of some problems. Though other times you gotta hook up the Pico-scope for good measure figuratively and literally.
Serious question my 1990 Polaris trailblazer has front shocks and they are leaking. This is my first quad so I don’t know if I can keep driving even though they leaked a bit. It drives okay but it gives a little squeak if I hit a pothole going a little too fast.
You seem to be assuming that you _need_ shocks. It is clear that someone thought they were unnecessary, along with a frame, a battery connection, fuses, working starter clutch, …
The tug made it look good. But the PULL showed me it was FUBAR. aaaaaaaaand it bounced around uncontrollably hitting bumps, wore the inside tread of my tire as well. lol
An easier way is at each corner of your vehicle put all you weight on that corner and let ho quickly. If the vehicle keeps bouncing more than a twice, shocks are busted.
well that was unexpected, said no one. like anyone ever changes the shocks on a quad or a motorcycle who isn't racing the thing, or rebuilding and restoring it. they start it, ride it, and the day it won't start or ride, they push it into the weeds out back, or if it's lucky, into the back corner of a building saying they'll fix it "one of these days", which is code for never, and then promptly forget about it, or use it as a shelf and pile crap on it until they can no longer see it, and then forget about it. don't roll your eyes at me, you know i'm right. in fact, i'll bet if we find a pile of crap in the corner of one of your storage buildings, underneath the accumulation of random whoosey-whatsits, there's a lonely, forgotten something with an engine on it that just needs some love and it'll be right as rain. you know damn well the vegas bookies wouldn't touch that wager with a ten foot pole.
You didn't use a scan tool! What kind of sorcery is this 🤔

Love all the "high tech" tools you utilize in your videos ! Good one.
Be careful Not to mix up a shock dynamometer with a wrench. They are subtly different.
Great work as always.
I hope that thing was cheap Wes, it's a can of worms. I only needed my 'eye-ometer' to see that shocker was buggered.
Yeah mine told me the same thing so we definitely have them calibrated well.
Shitty geometry it’s so bound up ☹️
Lmao under rated comment
Nah, those are the on and off positions.

That’s shocking…….. I’ll get my coat 😀

A shocking escalation so to speak :D
Wes, it’s your willingness to share the basics like this that makes you such a valuable example to all would be mechanics. Don’t ever change.

2) Thanks for using a metric wrench. If you hadn't done that, I wouldn't have understood your great testing method. ;-) 😁

multi-test tools make the day roll by ! the update shorts are nice. especially when Max helps
😂😂😂a shock dinomometer now that's a classic
so, you bought a good set of used tires, AND the piece of junk they're attached to. Is that what you're saying? 🤣🤣
Will an 18mm work or only 17?
And there's me thinking that was perfectly normal all these years...dang, so you telling me I need new shocks now Wes? That'll be just fine...nope, no it won't 🤣👍
Ah, a variable camber shock absorber. Fancy.
Those are pricey these days. Haha.
"... This is mine, it's a 17mm variety.." XD XD
Seems fine to me... A little play never hurts anyone!
Crank cap has left the chat*
Every day I learn something new from you thank you very much❤
It's dead, Jim.
Are you sure it's not a variable drive mode shock? Or maybe adjustable ride height? I'm sure there's some way to market that as a feature.
How much does a Snap-On shock dynamometer cost these days?
I think you are totally correct! Thanks for the 17 mm exam technique.
Now that is a precise tool right there. I like it. And it is very cost effective also.
Hey Wes. Looks fine!!! Pay no attention to the mis alignment
Wil a 17mm socket work? And do they require recalibration?
It's not bad till you notice its riding kinda weird and notice it's completely disappeared.
True story, my 94 silverado was riding the wave on driver side and I noticed my entire strut had fallen through and disappeared only the spring was left.
Is your dynamometer metric or imperial? And what are some ballpark readings that would imply a faulty shock?
I have a cheap Chinese quad bike. I’m always buying or making bits for it.
Looks like yours wins though.
Buy another one for spares then weld the two together for a side by side. :)
Crazy tool bro, does snap-on sell them????
Mechanical know-how makes quick work of some problems. Though other times you gotta hook up the Pico-scope for good measure figuratively and literally.
Didn't need the wrench, just your eyeballs 😄 before I heard you say the word shock I sae that mess 😳
how do you calibrate your shock dynamometer?
Nah just a normal play leave it like it is trust me hahahaha. Nice contents Wes!

what are the runout limits for shocks? That one might be ok.
Hmmm Nascar quick release shock. Pioneered by Buddy Wallslammer in the 70s.
I like to use a tool called an "eyecrometer", they are great in situations like this
🤣 the gift that keeps on giving!!
I don't have coilovers. Is it okay to use a 15 mm instead ? 😆
That's a left and right side switchable shock, very expensive, I bought the last ones at Autozone and they were crying as I left for some reason
Eh she's got atleast 20 more miles on her. I'd say ship it, thats what we call 'Future work'
ehh, don't think so - i believe one of the drivers is gonna be his wife.
Does that shock dynamometer come in all the popular sizes and colors ?
Any size you need!
Can you add a link where we can buy one of those "Shock Dynaomoneter's" ? I tried to google it, but it was no help
That shock is WAAAAYYYY past buggered!!
The fact that you can see that it's not straight anymore would be the only indicator you need.
Whoa, slow down coach.....
Heh heh heh heh!!!!
Dynomometer..... Wow. We're just simple Pirates....
What should it have done?
You should have used the Imperial 669/1000" wrench - better fit!
You seem to be assuming that you _need_ shocks. It is clear that someone thought they were unnecessary, along with a frame, a battery connection, fuses, working starter clutch, …
It'll be fine to go another couple thousand miles surely...... 😂😂
Would it pass inspection though?
A little jewelry will fix it right up! Scottie said so !!!!!
Brilliant!!
Shock is fine. Dyno was not calibrated prior to use.
Haha.. as soon as I saw it.. even in wide angle???... Nice one mate 😊
Hey, I just checked my tool box and I have one of those too.
What's the factory torque spec for the tug?
Half a stone.
It was pretty evident wothout even moving it... when shite aint parallel that should be its generally a good indication it aint good.
Nah it’s good for sure
why is that not pissing out oil?; that is a lot of lateral displacement for a seal to cope with
I'm sure it's long gone.
How do you phisicly break a shock like that?
Don't forget to clean out your oil screen on the bottom of the gearbox! It's a pain to get to, so few people do it
How do you test a shock absorber? You plug it in then touch it. If it shocks you it's broken.
As Peg would say --- yooooou don't need to worry aboot shocks!!!
that was obvious before you did anything.
that thing don't line up.
Depends on what you're looking for - pretty good on the flexibility range, I'd say.
this made my day funny as 😂😂😂
Yea I noticed that in your first vid, love the high tech toolage lol
That shock is the Polaris flavor for sure. Never had good experience with Polaris in general.
Understated.
You can always cut the springs to relieve the pressure
The tug made it look good. But the PULL showed me it was FUBAR. aaaaaaaaand it bounced around uncontrollably hitting bumps, wore the inside tread of my tire as well. lol
It looked crooked af to begin with
Wes I think you may have missed out on the "angle of dangle" provision. Don't be too quick to bin a highly developed piece of kit.
Might check all your shock and a arm bushings on those. They're known to go bad
An easier way is at each corner of your vehicle put all you weight on that corner and let ho quickly. If the vehicle keeps bouncing more than a twice, shocks are busted.
I use a three pound wooden handled version. 😁😎
Look at the piston rod!
The angle it leaves the shock body!🤣🤣🤣😂
Wow, where do I get such a tool, never heard of it. You should sell these!
well you could have made a visual inspection and noticed the difference of angle between piston tube and exterior tube : - )
Now you are just showing off bro, just watched DP with his new fancy high tech laser stuff and this beats it hands down.
Maybe.. could be a factory feature though!
Bit of a shocker, but I'm sure you'll bounce back 😁😄
How about just LOOKING at the angle of the rod?
That is one of those extreme duty off road shocks! It' a 2 Axis shock.
Wes, you're right, maybe this shock absorber only has a couple years more of life before replacing it 😆
Mmmm not too sure on that Wes. Better get the dial indicator out.
Is this how I adjust my camber?
well that was unexpected, said no one. like anyone ever changes the shocks on a quad or a motorcycle who isn't racing the thing, or rebuilding and restoring it. they start it, ride it, and the day it won't start or ride, they push it into the weeds out back, or if it's lucky, into the back corner of a building saying they'll fix it "one of these days", which is code for never, and then promptly forget about it, or use it as a shelf and pile crap on it until they can no longer see it, and then forget about it. don't roll your eyes at me, you know i'm right. in fact, i'll bet if we find a pile of crap in the corner of one of your storage buildings, underneath the accumulation of random whoosey-whatsits, there's a lonely, forgotten something with an engine on it that just needs some love and it'll be right as rain. you know damn well the vegas bookies wouldn't touch that wager with a ten foot pole.
Wes is awesome.
Nice tip to my arsenal 😄
Okay, but do you reeeeally need those “Shock” thingies on there? Maybe just replace them with all-thread!
If you need to pry on that shock to see that it’s bad you need to take it to someone. Crooked as hell
That's just factory tolerance! Shocks need a bit of "give" ;)
She still got some life in her. That'll go another million miles.
