  • On June 22, 2024 I rode my longest and most intriguing steam train excursion so far.
    Reading & Northern Railroad's Iron Horse Ramble with steam locomotive #2102 was the first train to depart from the new Nesquehoning Regional Railroad Station in Nesquehoning, Pennsylvania. It was a sold-out all-day excursion taking 700 passengers to Tunkhannock, Pennsylvania for the 43rd annual Founder's Day Festival.
    To do this trip justice, I've broken the video into six parts to (hopefully) make each part more watchable. This fourth part begins our return trip taking us from Tunkhannock to Pittston. 2102 was running tender first on this leg of the trip. I switched to primarily filming the road side of the train as we paralleled Route 92 between Tunkhannock and Falls and later Coxton Road as we neared the rail yard. This concluded the rare mileage part of the trip.
    Chasing trains and building models is hard work! You can help me refuel and support my adventures at:

    A lot of friends were riding or chasing this train as well, so be sure to check out their videos:

    Hi Jamie, thanks for another great segment. I hear you about the heat. You were wise to stay out of the sun in Tunkhannock. I too took a mid day break after 2102 left Pittston for Tunkhannock. Spent a few hours in the cool before heading back out for the return at White Haven & Nesquehoning. Despite the heat, a fun day. 😀

      Thanks, so glad you enjoyed this episode! I'm glad you took a mid-day break as well. The heat is not something to mess with, and it's better to cool down and be good to go for the rest of the day. I enjoyed the whole day very much despite the heat! It wasn't too bad when the train was moving.

    Another "WOW" segment❗the jointed rails just add to the railroad experience❗But, due to the extreme heat, i would think they would have had a diner stocked with cold water, etc, for safety purposes of the passengers 🤔😩❔

      They did have snacks and beverages for sale in the dining car, and they provided two free bottles of water for each passenger throughout the day.

    What are those abandoned looking industrial buildings north of Pittston that the train went by? And the line that goes by the cemetery is actually the ex-LV freight line? Who owns the ex-LV passenger line into Pittston and Wilkes-Barre? LV stopped passenger service in Feb 1961 and a lot of LV passenger stations were razed including the one in Allentown, PA near me in 1972. Jim Thorpe, White Haven, Wilkes-Barre, Pittston ex-LV stations are all gone. There are more surviving ex-CNJ stations in PA. CNJ pulled out of PA in 1972 and the LV took over some of the lines and merged LV and CNJ tracks together, like between north of Pittston and Laurel Run which is ex-CNJ.

      I'm not sure the history of the abandoned industrial buildings in Ransom, but it was a cool place to ride through. Looks like lots of railfans enjoyed doing photography there as well.

    Whenever 425 comes back from her 1472 Day Inspection and Boiler rebuild, maybe she could this time lead 2102 on a Railfan steam doubleheader excursion from Reading to Tunkhannock one day in the future!

      We don't have enough crew to do a full Reading to Tunkhannock run in a day, but a doubleheader on a shorter trip would be fun!

    6:08 a surprise! Some sort of active signal around the SAND switch. Unsure what it is for.

      I'm not sure what it's for, but it was fun to ride a new-to-me route to be able to find these things.

    "Wye" couldn't they wye the entire train like at Jim Thorpe?

    • @robkrasinski6217
      @robkrasinski6217 2 місяці тому +1

      I think it was an issue with a different railroad owning one leg of the wye but they were able to turn the 2102 by itself. RBMN doesn't own the tracks into downtown Pittston and Wilkes-Barre which are ex-LV tracks. At Jim Thorpe, they own all the tracks where the old and new bridges are that form a wye. The only non-RBMN track there is the NS track 2 on the ex-LV which goes to Hazleton. It's great that they are doing other excursions besides Reading to Jim Thorpe and other destinations besides Jim Thorpe, like Pottsville, Tunkhannock and Pittston and even Minersville with the RDC's.

    • @JamieMakin
      @JamieMakin  2 місяці тому +1

      RJ Corman owns one leg of the Pittston wye. While RBMN is allowed to use it, they opt not to bring passengers on it, so only 2102 was turned in this case.

    • @OldsVistaCruiser
      @OldsVistaCruiser 2 місяці тому

      @@JamieMakin - Do they operate as the Luzerne & Susquehanna RR? If so, I understand that the tracks are owned by the Luzerne County Redevelopment Authority.

      Well, I rode on the full wye on Aug 22, 2015 during the NS Fort Wayne 765 excursion from Bethlehem area. Apparently they got permission then to turn the entire train. What about the August 17 excursion? Will only 2102 be turned while the coaches are at the new Pittston station on the RBMN owned leg? How far is the Tomato fest from the wye? Will there be a bus shuttle?

    • @JamieMakin
      @JamieMakin  2 місяці тому

      They'll definitely have shuttle busses to get folks to and from the Tomato Festival. I'm not sure yet the plan for turning the train, but if I had to guess I'd think it'll be just 2102 getting turned again.
