When landscapes dig up and reshaped an area (and they don't want to cover it with rocks) they will buy sod and boom, new lawn. looks like something happened in that one spot, like a hole got dug up, and after it was filled in it was covered with a bad (defective) pice of sod, and now the grass there isn't doing so well.
