Sniffing essential oils from their bottles helped me. I used Rosemary, Eucalyptus and Frankencense. It took about 2 weeks. Coffee was one of the first scents that reurned for me. I was so happy!
My friend had a distinct change after his heart attack. Everything tasted metallic to him. The only thing he could handle was banana ensure. It did go away over time but was horrible to life with and never got an answer for. Parosmia during covid became common everywhere. Thankfully most people recovered. Glad you did.
Thanks so much for this! I follow Dr Pelz and Berg…and have been intermittent fasting for years. But, I hadn’t focused on healing my olfactory issues. Thanks so much for highlighting this!! ❤
I’m so glad you were able to get your taste and smell back. I’d love to see more videos on your health journey. I believe a love of food, cooking whole foods, growing food and health go hand in hand.
Really appreciate you posting this. My daughter has had parosmia for several years, and she really suffers with it - most foods, she says, "smell like the inside of a dustbin". For weight loss, following Dr Berg's advice I have tried intermittent fasting with great success, but I didn't know it might also help with parosmia. Fascinating, thank you!
Thank you for sharing this Marloes! I lost my taste and smell too during the virus. I haven’t gotten my smell completely back yet. I have to hold things like a candle, flower, perfume etc. right up to my nose to be able to smell it. I haven’t heard of these doctors or the books so thanks for sharing! 😊
I am very sorry to hear that you had suffered so intensely from parosmia but very pleased that you are now able to smell and taste properly again. What a terrible thing.
I've been fasting for a year and feel great-most likely from cutting out all the sugar and losing a bunch of weight. My recent bloodwork came back great, too. I've read a lot about fasting and how it can repair cell damage. I'm glad you are feeling better. 🙂
Two months before we were told about the virus here in the states,I was infected. I not only lost my voice but I also lost all taste and smell. It lasted three weeks, thank goodness I have it all back but;what happened to you at that extent may have very well happened to many others. Thank you so much for highlighting this problem🙏🌸
Excellent information Marloes. Thank you! I am on intermittent fasting for 3.5 years. In the beginning I chose 16 hours but I didn't feel good with it. A holistic doc in Germany then recommended to sitch to 14 hours and that seems to be the right fit for me. He said that he usually recommends 16 hours for males and 14 hours for females because of a different hormonal situation.
Yes! I follow my cycle because as a woman you shouldn’t fast every day. Also I adjust my diet depending on where I am in my cycle. It may be interesting for you to look into that as well? Fasting during certain days of your cycle may have a negative effect. Even for women who don’t have a cycle anymore, Dr. Mindy Pelz still suggests to follow a cycle in the fasting and eating to make sure hormones are balanced. Thanks for sharing your experience.
❤I think with sharing this, you will help a lot of people. I love it that you mentioned women live according to cycles, so true. I live with ALS and sometimes I shrug problems like this off or when people tell me about their hayfever... But I have luckily become more empathetic and not measuring my illness against other people's struggles. It was a learning curve tbh. I feel I am now in touch again with myself, before my diagnosis. Sorry it's in English as I haven't lived in NL for a long time now xx
Thanks for staring! I always try to remind myself that each person you meet may be fighting a battle you know nothing about. Struggle, illnesses and other things we need to deal with aren’t a competition! It’s not about whose life is harder but about how we can recognize and acknowledge the other is struggling and also allow ourselves to feel the hurt we’re feeling even though “others may have a much harder time”. Being loving towards ourselves and also to others.
@FrenchCountryLife yes exactly. But being diagnosed with young children and then divorcing as my then husband did not want to cope with the disease, brought the lioness out in me. I have managed to tame her... 🤣❤️
I love Dr. Mindy Pelz! I’ve been fasting since September and feel so much better and it’s not really a struggle to maintain. I’m so happy your smell and taste have returned. The body is complicated but very interesting indeed.
Marloes, we concur. We've been, fasting, low carb and eliminated all ultra processed foods, added sugar and seed oils from our diet for many years following a diagnosis of diabetes which was reversed. In our mid 60s we're healthy and on no medications. Prof Robert Lustig, Sten Edberg, Low Carb Downunder and Levels are excellent additional resources. Good health. M&R
I followed both these doctors for a while and fasted but other things got in the way!! But I'm glad to hear you have benefited from their teachings, hopefully will get back on track ASAP. 🤗
Since mentioning this in a previous video, I was excited to see this post. I too have distorted smell and taste. Gasoline and coffee smell similar. Coffee is not as enjoyable, like you I still drink it. Other tastes are not as pronounced as they should be. I used to describe myself as a perfumer’s nose so this has been frustrating at times. Thank you for suggesting resources of help👃🏻👅
I am so sorry you are experiencing this. It is something I think is hard to explain to others that haven’t experienced it and for them quite difficult to understand. I hope my video has helped you find resources you can look into. Wishing you all the best!
Wow, wow, WOW! I've been on a similar journey myself. Proper diet changes as we age, and the insulin resistance rises after menopause. I am still battling weight loss ( insuline resistance prevents weight loss) and other health issues such as allergies. The only thing I want to add to what you spoke about , is the gluten: allergy relation. This year I cut out gluten and within three months, I had no more allergic reactions to speak of, which is amazing. Still working on the weight loss (been doing intermittent fasting for quite a while) and lately I started a Keto diet, which is slowly turning things around, weightloss-wise. Good health is crucial for a good life.
Hello Marloes, I had covid 3 times followed by a complete loss of smell. The first time lasted a while as I had no clue what to do to restore my olfactory capability to pre-covid normalcy. Then someone told me about eating red grapes - something to do with the skins, I think. Within 3 days of eating (organic) red grapes (small handfuls throughout the day), lo and behold, there it was ! A normal sense of smell as though nothing ever happened. Te grape cure worked subsequent to the two other covid incidents as well. I don't know if this would work for everybody (or even whether the healing might have been coincidental), but it is worth a try - if it doesn't work, it certainly can't hurt. Hope this helps anyone out there with the same problem.
Same here. The smell of old onions that are molding is very often the smell. After loving Mexican foods I can’t tolerate cilantro! I keep trying! It’s very frustrating to a cook. I am much older than you (65) so I don’t know if I will get it back. I’m happy for you and wish you the best ❤
I honestly hope you find a way to heal. It is not easy to have to deal with and it impacted so many small and bigger things. Have you tried intermittent fasting before? It heals and restores so much more than just taste and smell. Wishing you all the best!
I am sorry you had to go through such a thing, and thrilled for you that you have found a solution to share. You reminded me of when I was pregnant. The smell of coffee was like rotten tuna fish! My husband never brewed coffee in the house until after I delivered. Every once in a while when making coffee I have a brief sensory memory, but it goes away as quickly as it came.
Love ya ta death, Marloes!! You always bring us a wealth of knowledge that you've learned and so much other goodness. Thanks so much for sharing what you've learned. I'm definitely going to get this book and check out that video as I too struggle with smell ever since i can remember. 🥰
I had the same experience. I started the low carb diet and after 2 months all of my allergies (hay fever, ...) were gone! It has been over 3 years and I never had to take medication again. I couldn't believe it at first. 😊
I’ve had this challenge also Marlos….thank you for discussing it. Have found recently that using essential oils has brought back some smell function, plus zinc and Vitamin B-1. The coming of Med Beds will cure everything, but until those get activated, we try these other things! (Med Beds animal centers will also be working for our animal friends!…perhaps into the beginning of the New Year!)
I’m 45 and in perimenopause. I lost my smell and taste in 2022 after COVID. It still did it came back, not even 1%. I’ve tried IF before but it was very challenging for me.
I am so sorry you have to experience this. I hope you find ways to help it improve that are easier for you to do and keep up. We are all different and our bodies are different. I sincerely hope doctors find solutions for this and that research is being done. So many struggle with it but my doctor when I asked him about it said I was his only patient that suffered from this and it made me feel very alone and like he wasn’t going to try to help me. Sending you love!

Wonderful! I have lost weight too and I need to stay mindful of eating enough in my eating window as I do not want to lose more weight. It’s crazy though.
