"Unsafe at any Speed" : The Truth about RECALLS | WheelHouse

  • Just because a car is brand new doesn’t mean it is safe. Sometimes manufacturers overlook (or ignore) critical safety errors in their designs, and let the final product loose on the public- with disastrous consequences. Here are some of the most dangerous cars ever made, and how they were taken off the road.
WheelHouse answers all the questions about the automotive world you never thought to ask. Nolan Sykes looks at the history, sociology and psychology behind the cars you love, and the features you might overlook.

Of course, 11$ per car. That means that you could die because Ford did not want to spend 11$.
Ford had your life on one hand, 11$ on the other one, and they decided to keep the 11$.

7:19 this equation was actually mentioned in Fight Club by the narrator as a recall coordinator. His job was to apply "the formula". Take the number of cars in the field (A), multiply it by the probable rate of failure (B), then multiply the result by the average of the out of court settlement (C). A times B times C equals X. If X is less than the cost of a recall, they don't do one.

One thing that always freaked me out about older cars was since the exteriors were so tough there was no crumple zone to absorb impact force meaning if you get into a head-on collision your body is going to be taking a lot more force upon impact.

  • @Zizzily

The risk/benefit analysis was done for the NHTSA and is standard procedure. In fact, the NHTSA itself calculated the cost of a human life in a 1972 study at $200,725. The Pinto wasn't more dangerous than other cars of its time; people only noticed because of the media. _Unsafe At Any Speed_ targeted the Corvair, Texas A&M did a study for the NHTSA and found that it wasn't any more dangerous than other cars of its time, either. Neither the Pinto nor the Corvair was more dangerous than other cars of the time, yet they got all the press while the other, equally unsafe cars, were ignored. While recalls are important, we need to also focus on general safety.

We all must demand what is fair to get it or else we would be slaves and it's slowly coming to. Not only with cars, but with knives, guns, missiles, tanks, money, jobs. You must know your self value and tell everyone what you are valued and do not ever think that you are less just because other people think they are less, now you must give it your all though. You must be good at what you do. You must have value. Where I am now, I wish I can tell the boss I want to get paid more, but I really am not in such a great position. Bill's have to be paid, but this is what I have learned from life. Do not ever mow a lawn for $20. Not even when you are just starting.

My grandfather, Lynn Bradford, was the one fighting Ralph Nader to recall the Pinto; succeeding and saving lives. He witnessed some of the burned victims, got had the crash testing authorized and funded and shot the footage at 6:00. He still has the original film reels and photo prints of the explosions. I couldn't be more proud of this and the other car safety improvements he fought for, and designed in some cases. Here's some docs of him. www.autosafety.org/staging/wp-content/uploads/import/NHTSA%20to%20Nader.pdf

Your willingness to accept those 2 rules shows your susceptibility to authority. Tyler even says himself that we have no purpose or place, so why place yourself under a rule set when the whole idea is to be what you want, to be free from all purpose or place?

Biggest problems are not the manufacturers, but drivers being lulled in a safety haze. Just because your vehicle has a 5 star crash test rating, doesn't mean you can plow through traffic with reckless abandon. Don't get me wrong, selling a known defective product is wrong as well. I'm not advocating the Ford pinto or anything. Never would I suggest buying a pinto. Or a dart. Or any dodge Chrysler jeep product. Jokes aside, motorists really need to be aware of they're surroundings and drive responsibly. The problem with most modern vehicles is distractions, not safety. You can't use a cell phone while driving, but yet, you have this giant touch screen in the center of the dash, along with several buttons on the steering wheel. Older cars had a radio and heat/a.c. that was about it. That's why I love my 03 Celica gt. It has the bare essentials. That's it.

    • @CanadaBud23
      @CanadaBud23 6 років тому +3

I get the same feeling. In my intrepid lol I don't really care too much if someone were to hit me, I don't want it to happen for any reason because that cost money and time and injury etc. but I'm not going to get heartbroken over it but even then that particular concern is there: I wonder if some dough head will run their toaster into my car because they needed another new one. I'd be pretty pissed.
In my XJ on the other hand is my toy and my life I've had for 20 years. It's caged and reinforced, heavily modified, basically a race car. I've put my life and soul into the vehicle, doing everything from the ground up. It's got roll up windows and a heating duct and some lighting, barely an interior buuut it's 400hp 5spd 4wd, full custom suspension with steam roller semi slicks. And someone leaning on it wrong would make my blood boil and the thought of some brainless zombie driver in their safety toaster would just willy-nilly plow into it without a care in the world scares the life out of me. I mean, I'll walk away even in a nasty crash but just the thought of thousands of people that would just drive into someone because "Oh well! :D :D :D :D 2018 safety mobiles!" all around me gives me the indication that what we are saying IS the biggest threat on the road.

Just want to add this, the corvair did not have a “flawed” suspension, it had a swing arm style suspension very similar to ones used in iconic cars like the porsche 356, VW beetle, and Mercedes Benz 300sl. And it is one of the best handling cars of its time period, Not to Mention one of the first production turbo charged cars. Ps the tire pressures are located on the inside of the glove box.

    • @chrislembke9566

Agreed! Even Nader lists features in Unsafe at Any Speed where the Corvair was ahead on safety like having the gas tank recessed from the front for protection, uni-body construction, and the updated design for 1965 which went to full independent suspension. The NHTSA even debunked Nader's claim of suspension issues in 1971.

Screw Ralph Nader. Now that's out of the way, the Corvair is as safe as any car of the day. The issue with the suspension was fixed in late 1963 and at the same time, Volkswagen's Beetle and Porsche's 911 used almost identical suspension setups and powertrain layout. Watch Hagerty insurance's video on the Corvair. They tried to roll it over in normal and abnormal conditions. I am the proud owner of a 1964 Spyder and am planning on driving the wheels off of it.

I've had this conversation with friends. A manufacturer will not issue a recall until it's less expensive to do so than it'll cost them otherwise. It's all about money.
I have a motorcycle that had a couple of flaws that most owners just fixed then complained that the manufacturer wouldn't do anything about it. I kept telling them it wasn't going to change until the company was forced to deal with the results. I didn't fix mine, I just let it go and one day while I was riding to work, my bike caught on fire. It was a small electrical fire that stopped when I turned the key off, but the damage was done. My bike was still under warranty, so the dealership fixed it, and within a few months the manufacturer issued a recall for that electrical wire routing flaw and everyone's bikes were fixed... because paying a mechanic for 10 minutes worth of work was MUCH cheaper than the $1200 worth of warranty repair they had to do on my bike.

Another major issue when it comes to safety recalls is getting the customers to come in and fix the problem. I work at a Honda dealer and we have been told of people that have died after an inflator ruptured and they had been called, mailed, and emailed and the customer refused to come in. We have a special team now that goes door to door replacing inflators because we cant get people to come in.

I’ve seen what the Takata air bag can do to people first hand. I’m a firefighter and we got a call for a two vehicle accident and when we got there we only had two injuries both relatively minor but serious enough to be transported. The first injury was to the driver with cuts on her face and chest and her young son in the middle seat in the back had the same injuries which we thought was weird because none of the windows broke out. Turns out the car they were in had been recalled because of the airbag. Having seen that I am furious that Takata was able to get away with putting money over lives.

I have a friend who has totaled 3 cars, thankfully the airbags went off in one, and the other two having crumple zones, kept his body safe. Designers will always have to design around car safety and often they can't help but make a shitty looking car, but there are still plenty of newer cars that look good AND are safe.

But...that's 100% consistent with his thesis that cars were unsafe. If anything you'd think they'd get more mileage (hehe, pardon the pun) out of proving he DID have a car. "See, he claims cars are unsafe and yet he still drives one!"

My Subaru has a recall for a gasoline leak in the engine. It's a $25 hose. But the labor is over $1,000 to put it in because the engine has to be stripped to the block. The proper fix is once you have everything apart, one should replace all the hoses.
My dealer refused to fix it. I wrote to Subaru HQ and they forced the dealer to fix it. Not only did they not fix it after keeping my car for 3 days (waiting for parts that they never installed), they loosened my intake manifold hose so I would have to go back. I have been driving a car that smells like gasoline and could explode at any moment for 10 years.

A new car built by my company leaves somewhere traveling at 60 mph. The rear differential locks up. The car crashes and burns with everyone trapped inside. Now, should we initiate a recall? Take the number of vehicles in the field, A, multiply by the probable rate of failure, B, multiply by the average out-of-court settlement, C. A times B times C equals X. If X is less than the cost of a recall, we don't do one.

Japanese, Germans and now Korean car makers were proactive in making their cars the best possible and that's why they actually sell.
