I'm first in my family that I know of to duck hunt. My first hunt was today and I got 3! I bought a cheap shotgun, a box of decoys, and some ammo. I didn't use any calls, and I just layed down and covered myself with weeds and waited. Immediately ducks started coming in to my decoys. It was amazing, and I loved every second of it. Now I just need to be a better shot. I plan to keep trying!
Mitch Droese Wow, that's an awesome story. Do you live near the country? How did you find the place? Part of my problem is I live in a town with almost 5 million people in it and the surrounding area. I know, even with all those people, there's duck hunting not too far away, but it's mostly on farms. Very few water ways that are out of city limits, and I got no boat.
@@jimf1964 I have no boat. I hunted on a farm pond and I used a fishing rod to cast out and retrieve the ducks I shot. I do have the benefit of access to a pond to hunt on, but I'm looking at some public access spots as well.
Honestly, I'd scout some places and go knock on some doors and ask if I were you. Look up hunting forums in your state too. A lot of those people are super helpful and might also be willing to take you.
Mitch Droese Yeah, that's another problem for me. I live in Quebec, so it's pretty darn french...and I'm not. There just aren't enough english people to have any kind of forum, but I'll look into it anyway. It's just not well organized here. I'm hoping to move to english Canada soon though. Good idea with the fishing rod. Good luck, thanks for sharing. It's very encouraging,
I am 71 years old and have been duck hunting from age 10, My advice to would be duck hunters is to find some one who has been doing it for years and learn how to do it in your area. I started hunting with my grand father on the Mississippi Delta. As a young man i moved to the South eastern Virginia area and had to adapt to a the type of hunting done there. In Mississippi a dozen or so decoys and a fast open bore shot gun worked well for the flooded timber on the Delta. In Virginia on Back Bay a 3 inch mag. with a tight bore worked best. 30 years ago My company sent me to Eastern North Carolina and again the hunting was not the same. it was stake blinds with HUGE spreads of decoys. ( at least 10 dozen ) The birds were wind driven and very fast, they come fast and land quickly. again the tight bored 3 inch gun works well. The dog you use hear must be tough and stand cold rough water. Labs are a minimum but any strong retrever will do.I love your video but it does not represent my all the types or locations of duck hunting that we here in the south east have.
Just the sight of seeing birds turning your way. Watching them as they fly over your spread, their heads turning back and forth, the wind whistling through their wings. Seeing them decide this is where they want to set. Their wings setting and their feel dropping. There is absolutely nothing better than that! What a wondrous sight!
The BEST advice I've heard in 56 years of waterfowl hunting and I started when I was 8 years old. Not only a psychiatrist, but also a financial planner who will restrict severely what you would spend on shotguns, shells, decoys, dogs, boats and travel. You're better off hiring a guide and claiming it as entertainment for clients. It will lead you to drink, or worse bad habits. You'll look back over the years and see where you could have invested your money better. Hell, I could have built a mansion out of the Jack Daniel's bottles I've emptied. I could have probably financed a presidential campaign with the rest. I don't regret any of it and would do it all over again.
Holy crap this really hits home, it was like he was speaking for me. Waterfowl hunting is a drug once you start you can’t stop some of the greatest memories i have is with my dad and my uncle out hunting and laughing. You couldn’t explain it better, great video!!!
I'm 69 and have been duck hunting since I was 12. Went out yesterday in the boat down the river. Just me and Daisy. She's not quite 2 but retreived over a hundred ducks last year. This video hits the nail on the head. The good days are magical and are what keep you going.
i agree with the part where you said "you do everything you need to do to make five minutes happen" so true, so many great memories made and so many more to come
Great as always. I posted earlier to your UA-cam home page but again wanted to say "thanks" for sharing and letting me see that we all go through the same struggles in the field and in life. Might bump into your crew at C & L somewhere if you guys get this way for the 2014-15 waterfowl season. We just started the process with Levi to join this great club and again good luck on this upcoming season.
Brian Brunell You are welcome! Thank you for watching. We will definitely be back out to visit C&L. They have some incredible property and Levi has said they've picked up even more!
I'm only 14 and I and I've been obsessed with it since I was 4. I agree my mom has asked what I want to do over the weekend and all I do is ask her what time of the it is.
Number 1 recommendation to new duck hunters: DON'T DO IT! You'll find yourself broke, insane, and waiting on the latest Fowled Reality video to come out in May.
Great video! We recently started waterfowl hunting, and our first trip was with some friends that were nice enough to take us, and we were hooked ever since! Excited for year 3 starting this weekend!
Lucky enough to have a reliable spot for woodies, scaup and pintail in west texas. After november they come in droves along the south concho river. Can hear them flying in even even up to an hour before sunrise. Christmas morning 2017 was a day to remember.
Awesome Video i cant wait for duck season this year and im only 14 but im addicted to waterfowl hunting after only going for one year and killed 5 birds i love your guys videos
I appreciate the true aspect of this video. To pass down a historical knowledge and past time legacy. Many ask "how do I start"? Start with shotgun knowledge and safety, understanding the ducks and the habits of the duck, learn the unique history of America waterfowling, learn the techniques of waterfowling. And most importantly, know the law and conservation. There are many books and videos that will provide insights. Also, pay attention to the other hunters. Both good and bad. I got the addiction 38 years ago and haven't missed a season. I've hunted all conditions and terrain. I've had 4 retrievers. I hope to hunt many more years, in many more areas and with a few more dogs. Feet down!
So true, even here where we have a lot of ducks. They are days that are good, and days that are just difficult. The good days are worth all the bad ones.
It's past midnight in July in the middle of a pandemic. I have to wake up for work at 4 am and it hit me that teal season opens in 2 months. Here I am watching videos about duck hunting.
I'm new to waterfowl and you guys are spot on, but I'm blessed with a spot that ducks unlimited hunts and we are swimming in geese. Thanks for the advice and great video.
After my first duck hunt 7 years ago, I was hooked! I used to be an avid deer hunter, but now I wouldn't trade a day of duck or goose hunting for any other kind of hunt.
The bad days are what makes the great days great. Now, tell me about what it is like if you are like me and are completely obsessed with all types of hunting. Most of us only have one type of game we primarily go after some of us have to deal with being torn between hunting deer or ducks when the seasons run together.
@@nenaj1 you want fairness??? Go out and represent yourself as a dinner for a wolfpack, bear or mountain lion. Oh right, you wouldn't do this, because you are a human, something special on this planet that haven't go with the nature...yeah sure -.-
Texas waterfowl hunters are the best hunters. By the time the birds make it our way they’ve done seen it all and been shot at etc. We still limit out because of hard work, strategy, & skill
As always a great video. it is nice that you showed and explained all the work that goes into waterfowl hunting, many people watch videos or on TV and think it is easy. I have people ask how the hunting went and when I tell them slow they reply with " how can that be? you sit out there and ducks always come. I watched it on TV."
naw yall will have more great vids next year all the scouting you guys do pays off try coming east the birds are alittle more tricky to scout and track down not to mention we don't have the lands like out in the mis and central flyway. we mite be venturing that way this upcoming season
great job guys, very well put. couoldnt have said it better myself. im from SW michigan and we put our time in, and fuel spent. ever need another friend in the field let me know and ill be on my way. always looking to make new hunting partners, and the miles spent, is always worth it at sunrise w/your buds. again great job
Not a problem. Us true sportsman have to stick together these days for our future generations. Serious about the hunting party though. Im up for the drive just need some heads up.
On public land the emotions of frustration and ellation are even stronger. The swings between the highs and lows are much more extreme. Amazing success is less frequent but when it happens it's that much more powerful an experience.

Liked the vid y'all really nailed it on this vid. Yeah I think every duck or goose hunter has people ask them why you do it. But if they went out on there first hunt and saw wings cupped they would be hooked.
all of the people in the comments saying that waterfowl hunting isn't that hard, they are the people that go out on a Saturday with 2 decoys and pack up at 10:00 they aren't the hardcore hunters like these guys are

you boys call hunting the midwest hard..... come hunt west michigan. its considered a good hunt if you shoot more than 1 bird
But that's still the Midwest? So yeah that's why they said it was tough.
its not in the midwest flyway.
Michigan and Wisconsin are in the Mississippi flyway. I don't think there is a Midwest flyway because the Midwest doesn't extend all the way south.
Ya it's the central flyway
