- When Justine Barwick went for a swim off her yacht in Queensland’s iconic Whitsundays region last year, she had no idea her life would change in minutes.
She was bitten by a shark just as she dived under water in Cid Harbour.
A dramatic twilight helicopter rescue ferried the unconscious woman to Mackay hospital where surgeons managed against all odds to save her life and her leg. Her attack became the first of three in a matter of weeks in the Whitsundays.
Five attacks since September last year have ignited a heated conversation about shark control in the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park area. In the midst of the debate, Justine Barwick remains resolute about maintaining a positive attitude about her recovery and the Whitsundays.

It's beyond me why people are shocked that sharks are in the ocean.

Jenny Hope ... not the point at all... this area had never had a reported shark attack, then in a year there is 5 in this area. Aussie usually has shark attacks in South Australia, Western Australia mostly.

@@Orion227 every time we get in the ocean there is a risk same as when you get in your car , sure theres been attacks in south australia and western australia but if you look at the odds your more likely to be injured in a car accident than the possibility of being attacked by a shark , its there enviroment we enter at our own risk , sure the thought of being bitten isnt a great one and ive been unfortunate enough to loose a friend from a attack but who do you blame ? they dont walk on land so if you dont want to accept the risk simple buy a swimming pool , that may sound blunt but its the truth

@ISLIPPEDONMYBEANS ! While I agree that everyone should know there are sharks, once there has been an attack there should be signs stating the attack has taken place and where. Just gives people a full picture to make an informed decision and a much better measure than killing sharks
@Lythnar Bean I don't know - a constant sign stating the last attack in the area would be a sobering reminder to anyone wanting to enter the area.
Even as a brit I wouldn't swim there! But people visiting from countries where there is a language barrier may not be as aware of the risks

They have signs with a shark symbol on them instead of words. I have bad eyesight & can't read a lot of signs but I can definitely see a shark outline on one. These should be universal.

If there is water in the ocean there will be sharks...plain simple common sense.......I cannot understand anyone being surprised that they are everywhere in the ocean , do they think there are fences stopping them from moving from one area to another ?.......I never swim in the ocean , only ever in a pool....a shark attack is on the top of my “ hell no “ list !

I was in the Whitsundays a few months ago. When I told the tour guide I wasn’t going in the water, the tourists looked at me like I had 3 heads. Why aren’t you going in, they said. Because I’m from North Queensland I told them.. I didn’t say anything else, but in my mind I was saying, because there are apex predators swimming beneath you.. Sharks, Crocs.. it is a risk anywhere along the Australia coast. The marine guy was right, killing a few sharks in the area doesn’t solve the problem, they will be back. And to blame the government for not putting signs out... what a moronic thing to say... you’re an idiot if you need a sign to tell you that the ocean is a dangerous place.

I agree they shouldnt kill sharks but people should be allowed to swim in the ocean, it's a wonderful activity. Everyone knows by doing so that you are taking a risk - but it's such a small risk statistically!
Killing animals so that we can have fun in their environment is very sad behaviour from humans 😢.
I would also hazard a guess that it's more about protecting tourism profits.

Once you decide to jump into the Ocean u should know: U.r no longer at the top of the food chain, u can (or will) become part of it.
Also the more we overfish our oceans, the more likely sharks will attack anything for survival.

Rachel Conradie That’s silly. There has never been any data to suggest that is true. Humans are not on a shark’s menu. Too little fat and meat per lb. Still, the only way to be sure is to take a bite.
If one shark has a brain illness and keeps attacking humans, that shark must be killed.

“Where was the government’s duty of care” regarding the warning signs? It’s the OCEAN! There are sharks in it!
Lest we forget that there are many people who think the government is their lifeguard and Santa Claus rolled into one neat package for almost everything they need or want. Be serious and reasonable and realize that our politicians were not elected into office to warn us of every danger that lurks all around us on a daily basis. It's our responsibility to live every day as safely as possible and use the brains that we have been given. One simple precautionary rule is: "Be sure to look both ways before crossing the street!". Likewise, gaze out into the great oceans of the world and think that there are dominant and dangerous creatures out there before diving in!!!!

So I live in South, Florida. And if I go outside At 8 to go swimming in my backyard. I'm pretty sure I'm going to get bit by a mosquito. It's really that simple. If I go outside at noon, I'm pretty sure I'm going to get sunburned. You can't enter something else is environment. And expect it to respect that you're there. What's next we remove all the sand because no one likes and on their feet on their towel. LOL, I know that sounds ridiculous, doesn't it? So does killing sharks?

Knowing where the first aid kit is is half the battle. Having a trauma doctor on hand is pure serendipity. Having the patient fighting to hold off shock ( which kills) is miraculous. She deserves medals for bravery.

I've been to the Whitsunday Islands when I visited my parents who live in Queensland. I went on a boat trip and went swimming with lots of beautiful tropical fish around me. At the time having a lovely time I didn't think about Sharks that could have been in the area. I assumed I was in a safe stretch of water being on an organised boat trip with people who know that the place we went to was safe. But considering how quickly sharks can swim and that yes, they can turn up in places they're not expected, it shows that nowhere is safe all the time. The Oceans are their territory, if humans go into the water or on the water on boards and boats accidents can be expected. The Whitsunday Islands are beautiful, but anyone going into any stretch of water where known dangerous animals live do so at their own risk

MamaRoach 75 Though I agree with you ultimately, I also disagree to an extent. I do not get into the water because I hate sharks and am terrified of them. My family vacations in New Smyrna Florida and it’s considered shark bite capital of the world. I have seen them. Many many of them! So I don’t get In because I feel it would be absurd to do so and then cry that I’ve been bitten and expect the shark to be killed. That is asinine.
However, 100 sharks being killed is not comparable to one human being attacked and killed. We are humans and they are animals. They are here for other purposes but much of our wildlife is here so we can eat them. That’s their purpose.
I don’t view sharks in the same way I view dogs, cats, or other non predatorial animals. So besides the fact sharks keep our marines’ ecosystem going, they don’t matter to me to a great extent. People should stop seeing sharks as equal or as important as humans. They are not. I see these same types of comments all over UA-cam. People comparing the lives of animals to a human.
Nonetheless,I do agree if a person doesn’t want to risk being attacked by a shark, stay away. Period. Then, we all win. It’s that simple.

I have grown up in the Whitsundays... I feel these people were somehow let down... How was a hole so large in local knowledge reaching into the 74 Islands and the Captains suddenly not getting through?
Been out to the Islands since 1978... Before Able Point Marina, when you'd drive the hill top and see turtles and wrasse feeding from the road side... My dad was the Dr in Town for 37yrs and there were perhaps a dozen bites, little ones in that time but one large one, at night, when drunk passengers were jumping in the water at Nara Inlet...
Since Cyclone Debbie and the disturbance to the reef.. The variation and numbers of fish stock were down significantly.. The waters are murky due to the turbidity stirred up by dredging for Coal Ports.... Sharks.. We've all seen shark week.. we know the ingredients... 1. Murky Waters, you get mistaken 2. Thrashing about, especially at dawn and dusk is always a terrible idea, snorkel calmly 3. Be in the water in numbers 3 or more usually deters most sharks 4. CID HARBOUR is a well known shark spot and NO LOCALS SWIM THERE... Here's a list of spots Local have ALWAYS avoided swimming in.. CID HARBOUR, NARA INLET, MARCONA INLET, HOOK ISLAND PASSAGE, NORTHERN HAYMAN ISLAND, SOUTHERN FACING BAYS ON WHITSUNDAY ISLANDS, ANY SUBMERGED ROCKY OUT-CROP...
Callum Gillman I grew up here too and couldn’t agree more. Multiple shark attacks in the same location... here’s a solution.... DONT SWIM IN THIS AREA. The lack of common sense, we don’t need culling we need more education

I just was looking at Whitsunday Shark attack stats ( I was there in 1984 there were 2, 1 fatal, 1 non) and they seem to have spiked in 1990. Why? What cyclone was close enough to cause conditions just like Debbie? Is this the pattern?? Took two separate sailing trips and two very different skippers. One very cautious about our water adventures (Skippered a vessel in the Sydney to Hobart, Stuart amazing guy) the other could have cared less.. Luckily he was after the smart one. Best time of my life.

why someone would be swimming after 5pm in open water is beyond me. Dusk and dawn is when sharks are most active. I'm sorry for what happened to this lady but there is some personal responsibility that must be acknowledged. To propose that action must be taken to "make people safer" from sharks when we are literally are entering their territory/habitats is preposterous.
Gosh, so glad Justine survived a shark attack. Very glad she was saved by good medical care, and urgent help by the helicopter team.
I like the way she calls it an "accident." Most attacks are cases of mistaken identity. The shark takes a bite, thinks, "Wait a second -- this isn't a seal" and swims away. If the shark meant to eat a human, she would have been dead. She didn't mean for it to happen, the shark didn't mean for it to happen. By definition, an accident.
What about the sharks that take a bite out of a human and continue to? Obviously we aren’t on the menu but for some sharks we happen to be on the menu in that moment

It wasnt a seal the shark was looking for. Doesnt look like seal habitat. More than likely a duogong or sea turtle was the intended prey.

Been surfing for 30 years. I have encountered sharks in the water many times, know there are sharks there, it’s their home. If I was to ever get attacked and survived, I will thank the sharks for letting me in their homes for all these years. I had the time of my life. 🙏🦈

When will humans realize they are entering the rightful domain of all marine life and take responsibility for any disaster that may befall them in that realm.

In fairness, no-one in this film "blames" the sharks or suggests they should be hunted. There are shots of attempts at shark control by local authorities, but none of the actual victims promotes it, or expresses any hostility towards sharks whatsoever.

How big is that lions cage? As big as the ocean? It’s like all the people here in Canada that go hiking in a forest - we are entering into Bear territory but the forest is massive and it is extremely rare for an attack to occur - we know we are in their territory. sometimes bear attacks are years apart - but the risk and threat are there just like sharks in the ocean.
That being said … I will never swim in any ocean lol - I’m way to scared. Even when I travelled to Australia- I sent in for a few mins and I checkered out

"there's no history of sharks", except that sharks are ocean dwelling animals, and the ocean is as old as the earth. The moment a shark comes on to dry land and attacks a human, yes, kill it. But if you swim in a body of water where there might be sharks, don't be surprised if a hungry, opportunistic sharks tries to eat you. This was so infuriating to watch. What can be done? Stay out of the ocean!
Desert Rose can’t agree more. I grew up in the Whitsundays though and there is a huge history of sharks in cid harbour, locals would never swim here. Especially early morning or afternoon when she did.
Here’s the thing...Sharks live in the ocean ppl, we enter there domain we have a choice, we can swim in pools sharks can’t, just stay out the ocean in areas sharks are found job done

Tiger sharks and some other breeds are starving because there are less fish, more tourists, warming waters. They come closer and bite
These incidents are of course terrible however you are swimming in the ocean around Australia you should know that there will most likely be sharks. You are in there territory it’s no use killing them for the sake of killing them

PTSD is no joke. Any trauma can cause something so horrific even after you physically heal. I'm glad my doctor gave me an amazing PTSD med called remeron. But it sticks with you forever. It's so sad the doctor died. Heart breaking but I'm glad the two ladies lived and gave hope
I wholeheartedly side with the sharks although i am heartbroken for the attack victims and their families, the oceans belong to the marine creatures. Hasn't man got control and power over just about everything else?

No reason to fear sharks or try and demonize them. As long as you are in clear water and they can see its a human they will not bite. Yes, some sharks have come from the bottom and mistaken a human for prey but it's one bite and release. Unfortunately big sharks can cause a fatal bite on accident. There has never been a case of predation on a human by a shark in clear water. You can watch that the video of the guy building a relationship with the big tiger shark Emma. It shows they are a lot more intelligent than we believe. They can build connections and have empathy with us humans just like a puppy dog

You cant blame sharks, they do what sharks do, try to survive
& you cant kill every shark in the seas & oceans because really its their home.
We are intruding into their world.
I used to live in Australia, near the Beach at Manley in NSW & sometimes early in the morning we'd go down to see what the fishermen had brought in, sometimes buying a bucket of fish. However sharks were sometimes caught & once gutted it was not credible to see what was inside their bellies.
During mating season they are more ravenous than normal & you'd see car number registration plates, rolled up carpets or Lino, Eski's ( cool boxes for food/beer) which are usually big things, eg a 12yr old could fit inside curled up so not like the puny things we get in UK.
Other things were a crunched up shop mannequin which gave all the onlookers the shock of their lives as we thought it was a human body. Another was a large safety deposit box - metal.
Loads of fishing accessories, blankets, toys, twice we saw dogs & a literal half a small Pony.
As well as the usual assorted fish
The Fishermen told us more gory ones too, human limbs, & sometimes bigger parts. Quite a few people whod gone missing were identified by a limb with a Tattoo, knowing most likely the person met their end as a shark attack.
Thing is, alot of the stomach contents seem impossible to swallow but its because they are always so hungry.
Also i recently learned, yes, sharks can detect a drop of blood in the water from miles away but its Fish Blood they smell.
Its now believed human blood isnt oily like fish blood & so it disperses rapidly & 95% goes undetected by sharks.
Its also proven that sharks dont like the taste of us.
However if they eat carpets & metal boxes then i doubt they'd be picky coz its a human - taste or not..
Oh i remember what else they found in a large shark belly...

Whether flying or swimming in tropical waters, don't miss out on the incredible things life has to offer. You could stay safe indoors for 30 years then step out on yr doorstep & a roof tile could dislodge, fall & split yr head open like an orange!

Hmmm...known shark infested area should mean you have enough sense to stay out of the water; the ocean is their home.
You have to ask yourself ‘What Has Changed in the Marine Environment’ to affect the behaviour of these sharks and their quantities in the area? Has something been removed or added to attract them enough to see humans as a food source? I’m glad there were survivors they were so lucky and my condolences to the family and friends of the young man who died, such a tragic event in one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever seen.
God created this beautiful world for us to live in. What has mankind done to it? Poured trash from cruise boats, oil spills, chemicals spewed into it - marine life, from the smallest to the biggest, have been infected, affected from this poison, and they cannot get away from it. Humans are responsible for this travesty. Big oil and pharmaceutical companies are only concerned with fat bonuses, increased production, bigger salaries - they should be made to clean up the mess they made. Sharks are getting sick from this garbage - affecting their brains and bodies- their food is dying off. I am ashamed that we, humans who should be smarter, are the ones doing this.
All people in the area should have been notified of the attack, and to stay out of the water. Sharks are usually well feed in the barrier reef area, so these repeated attacks may be an indication of dwindling fish supply in the area.
What a beautiful story. I want the focus to be on the survival attitudes of the first two victims and their families and friends. A beautiful story of survival of not just body but mind and spirit. Poor Daniel’s family is hurting and grief can be so devastating. I just hope that they find peace and don’t destroy the careers or reputations of the rescue workers who were obviously dedicated enough to put their own lives in danger. My heart goes out to Daniel’s family. Their loss is great.

Humans decide to enter and "enjoy" the ocean. It's not really essential for us to enter that environment. Sharks on the other hand have no choice. So stop going "full bible" and feel entitled to EVERYTHING! You are not.

33 years ago I was swimming in a river and a fish brushed up against my legs..that was my last time swimming in anything but a pool 😏 she's a brave woman to go back to the ocean.👍
Truth Fullness Actually it is very unlikely that she will get attacked again. You must be VERY unlucky to be attacked by sharks. Attacks are pretty rare.

I never went into the ocean or any other body of water after I watched the film “Jaws” at age 11. I didn’t even want to swim in a pool for a long time.

I HATED the pictures of the dead sharks. I feel sorry for the sharks.
I lived and worked in the Whitsundays all through my young years, I was a skipper and I worked for all the charter companies there, I also had my own commercial diving business, I put moorings in and maintained them, I also did the odd retrieval of anchors, when people chartering boats would lose them in deep water, and I did a few salvage operations on boats that sunk. When I tested people if they could sail a boat I also mapped out an itinerary and skippered their boat if they couldnt sail, in all the years I worked there and prior to me working there , there was never a shark attack, I used to say all the time to people who were a bit worried, there has never been a shark attack in the history of the Whitsundays. Now I see your Channel on UA-cam and I see over the last 10 years or so many shark attacks up and down our east coast. Whats going on ?

I'm so glad she survived and got her power back ! I live in Nassau Bahamas and we have shark attacks and deaths it's unfortunate but so ! My son works taking people in the sea and it's something we take a chance and so do the tourist ! That's just the reality
Hire a Drone operator for the day .We use them to help protect and warn oursurfers here in NSW
@C Hunter Thats funny ,we also have murky water here but still can see a hell of alot more from above even with sand and silt built up .Murky water ? Dont swim its simple. Constant stirring of water is a shark magnet , Sharks are fairly predictable. I dont often see spearfishermen or snorkellors getting ANY value in murky or Unclear water. Never did i say Drones will SOLVE ALL problems ,they will however give you a hugely greater advantage over water level spotting .

Been a surf lifesaver for 20 years for every shark you do see there is 10 you haven't seen near by! They are not out to get you! Millions of people swim in the ocean worldwide everyday with very few shark bites/attacks! It's their domain!

My heart goes out to all shark attack victims BUT people need to realise that every time you in the water you are entering the sharks domain! There’s no malice in their actions, they simply think you are food, unlike humans who kill them for their fins!🙄

I have been watching a channel where the man talks about shark attacks. He's done it for quite a long time, & he just presents the facts of the stories. It's interesting, also to read people commenting on their own experiences.
He goes back decades with some stories.
When I was younger, we lived in Rhodesia/Zimbabwe, & my family & I went on holidays to Durban, South Africa, for a few weeks each year. My mum & dad, my sister & I, stayed in holiday flats across from the beach. My mum also had family there, & sometimes friends of our family went with us.
I used to love the ocean & I was fascinated with the sea, watching ships on the horizon. My dad was not a tall man, & I was small, but at 12/13 I started going deeper into the sea with my dad. I knew how to swim, but those waves would knock me over, & sometimes I'd be spinning around & around. But I had no fear. I never thought about sharks. I was more concerned about being stung by blue bottles, which often happened.
Thankfully not any of us ever encountered a shark, & there were always many people on the beach & swimming & surfing.
Surfing is still a big thing in South Africa. As in Australia & other places.
Today at a much older age, I'd never go swimming in the sea. I still love it & I miss the sea & beaches.
I also moved to South Africa later on, & lived there for many years. The oceans, mountains & beaches are stunningly beautiful.
Oh, this UA-cam shark guy, also says there are far more shark attacks than people are told about.
I guess that's the risk you take when going into the sea, it's not human territory.

I only go knee-deep in the ocean. I just can't do it. This show reinforces how I feel. It's just a healthy mixture of respect & fear of our oceans. I love them & always want to be around them & on boats, but I don't much like getting in them.

Plenty of massive sharks attacking people in knee deep water. You can find the stories on youtube. 2 feet of water is more than enough for a 17 foot shark to sneak up on you.
I live on the oceanfront at Virginia Beach. We know sharks are always swimming nearby. I don't understand why these people were so shocked.
This is one amazing lady she looks at life with a very positive attitude. She takes bad occurrences and looks at the good that can happen from them. She’s very brave and a woman of loads of courage. This was a great video and showed how some people don’t give up no matter what happens or what they’re facing.I’m glad Hannah made it as she was a young girl. I’m so sad when I hear others didn’t make it. A shark attack is horrific occurrence and no once should be faced with such a horrible experience. I really admire all the people who assisted in helping Justine and Hannah and others. The emergency doctor and other doctors and helpers should be commended. What a simply amazing woman! Talk about strength. I have never been attacked by a shark, but I still won’t go in the ocean or even on a cruise. I’m a lakes or pool girl.
BUT BUT BUT! It is the sharks home, and that’s what we always need to remember! Just hate the fact a very few of them attack. So glad she is all right. I’d still be in therapy.

When you enter the ocean you enter the food chain.
I know this is an old post, but still so frustrating when the response is to cull sharks, as if that will make a difference. First, the ocean is their home. If/when you choose to go in, know that’s a risk you’re taking. Second, humans kill millions of sharks per year; sharks kill 3-6 people per year. Getting bitten is not an “attack” it’s usually a case of mistaken identity rather than a case of a shark targeting a human. Lastly, when a human takes a life (and humans do that all day every day around the planet) should we apply the same logic and start to cull the humans? The fact that the one person said that the protection of the humans is more important than the protection of the sharks is utterly ridiculous. These people are more interested in their tourist dollars than the lives of the people or the sharks.
I'd never swim in the ocean. I'd be quite happy sitting on the deck with a jug of Margarita's.

The fact of the matter is that the sharks live in the ocean it is their environment and they were there first. Every time that a human enters the ocean we must be aware that no matter whether or not there have been shark attacks there in the past it is ALWAYS a possibility. The ocean is the habitat of dangerous predators, so be safety conscious at all times, if you choose to enter the ocean it is YOUR responsibility not anyone else's.
You can say the same of cars accidents but car accidents remain tragic .
Come on mate, you nearly jumped onto the shark as you first jumped in. That’s their home.
The only action thats needs to be done is: do not get into waters when there are sharks. You can see and enjoy the Whitsundays without getting into the water.

I don’t know why UA-cam recommended a 4 year old video but I like Australian Story so I watched it.
I was more worried about box jellyfish and Irukandji when I was snorkeling at The Great Barrier Reef. That was until I was chased by a 6-7 foot black tipped reef shark. I was lucky that I’d only just gotten in the water and it was coming up from the bottom of the boat towards me, so I reached for the handrail and yelled shark and was yanked out very quickly. Apparently they only do a couple of test bites but no thanks, I don’t want any bites!
Leave the sharks alone. We are in their environment. 🦈❤️
