About time somebody start showing small home theaters. I have a small home theater, with 9.1.6 setup, with two little loveseats in my theater and a 77in OLED
Hell yeah! You setup a nearfield Atmos rig. This reminds me of my first studio space with 7.1.4 speaker setup. Can't wait to see the videos. Great choice with the equipment and speakers. I'm sure it didn't cost nearly as much as anything I saw at CEDIA this year. Keep up the great work!
The coolest Home Theaters I’ve seen in a small bedroom setup was this Harry Potter room that is very similar to yours on my channel. I used Velomax to blackout my window in my Home Theater. Highly recommend it. It adheres with water and static cling. Could not be easier to install.
I used that on a window I have as well and discovered the product based on your video. However, originally it wasn’t going to work for me as I have double pane windows. Which they said to not use it on. I later discovered Velimax has a white versions specifically for double pane windows that is safe to use on them.

This is great. My family and I bought our “forever” home last year and I finally got a dedicated room for my home theater, which I never thought I would actually have. However the room I have is a spare bedroom, almost identical in size to this one. (Actually mine is about 10.5 feet by 10.5 feet so a tad smaller.) I have a 7.2.4 Home Theater in it with 3 Home Theater seats and I couldn’t love it more. It also houses my work computer in a corner alcove that was the closet. I make it work the best I can but it’s great.
Do not listen to the Haters. What you said about the actual number of people listening to the HT is spot on. You may not go back to the big theater after you get everything dialed.. Small room immersiveness is awesome. Dont be afraid to put in some big subs. It will make all of the difference. My room is 12X12 with 10 ft ceiling. 7.4.4 . Running tower speakers front, sides and smaller towers for atmos. matching all of the drivers gives seamless sound. . 4 SI 18 in 4 CF boxes. Blacked out room with treatment and 86 screen .

I did this in an 11 x 10 bedroom! I added a small desk with a computer( 34 inch curved monitor on the wall for gaming). Also connected a ps5 and Xbox to TV on the opposite wall. Instead of the chairs, I got a couch with two recliners at the ends. 90% of the time it's just me in the room. I can lay down, recline or sit in the plush office chair. I absolutely love the fact that I don't have to go down to the basement into the dedicated home theater unless there is company over!
If you're going separates in a small space you may as well go more premium otherwise you may as well just get something like the Sony theatre quad instead if you're on a tight budget. To that end I'd be curious to see you set the quads up in this room too and do a comparison. I expect this system to be better given your investment but I'm curious just how much better/how close the quads get. I'd have gone 5 bed layer though. Either seat is too close to its surround and they'll be heavily localisable. Maybe even dipoles if they're still a thing.

When I retired this year I decided to repurpose my tiny office and set up a small budget system. Since I have always had sound bars and was not satisfied it was time for a change. My spouse hates the noise so I only set up one chair for myself but I can add one if needed. The room is 11 feet long by 8 ft wide with 8 feet ceilings - really small. Being this is my first wired system I decided to set up 5.1.2 but I bought the Onkyo NR7100 9 channel so I can add two more atmos or two side surrounds. I'm still tweaking everything to get the best sound but so far so good. So it can be done in a small space with a limited budget. Looking forward to your series.
So my spare bed room is my home theater, it's 10 x 12 x9 and I run a 7.2.4 separates system. Two seats, two 15" sealed subs, bookshelfs for my heights, towers for my mains and side surrounds. 77" OLED. It's not silly, it's fully functional and reference capable. That being said, I built a radiant barrier over the window to black out the light and heat. I mounted 4 acoustic panels and hung curtains from the ceiling instead of painting the room. I used screw hooks, pvc pipe, and eye hooks for the curtain rods. Something worth considering. Hope you like the Monoliths.
Thank you sooo much for this build. I am in the same situation and have been planning for months and struggling to envision the results. My room is 13 X 11 and I plan on doing 2 seats as well. I am in the gathering stage now and so far I have a pair of Tekton Moab Towers which are 6’ tall and an Anthem AVM90 Pre/Pro. I intend on purchasing a TCL 98” mini led tv next. I also plan on buying Buckeye 3 channel amp to start with. Considering 2 Rythmik F18 subs. Then it will just be a matter of time and also figuring out what speakers to fill in with for the surrounds and atmos. I just hope it sounds good in such a small room. Anyhow, thanks for doing this project and I’m excited to follow along

Please link to wall mounts. Iv been building my 11’by 10 .5’ for past year paint, wall jacks and all. I recommend running all wires through walls for a clean look. Thanks for video.

Love the adjustable speaker mounts. Here’s a question I can’t find an answer to. What is the lowest frequency Dolby will send to the surround speakers and height speakers for home media. I’m not talking about any crossover settings on the AVR/processor. How low is the frequency on the native tracks. This assumes a home theater had full range speakers on all 11 channels. I have seen some UA-camrs equip their setups with full range speakers. I see that as being a waste if Dolby isn’t sending anything lower than say, 80 hz to begin with.
I believe it’s up to the sound engineer who mixes it. I’ve never heard of a rule from Dolby that stipulates how low they are allowed to go with surround channels.
I'm excited for this series. I don't have a dedicated room for a big theater so I was hoping to do something like this in the future. My living room is an odd shape & has wood floors.
Yup, this is me, but I use my living room where the left side is an open space. My setup for the past year was 7.1, and just last week, I bought a cheap secondhand sub for the left where the open space is. Oh boy, it sounds much better now! For anyone in a similar situation, please get a minimum of two subs (left/right) so the sound feels balanced; otherwise, the speakers or the open space side won’t provide a very good enveloping sound. I’ll be following your video closely because I need my .4 up in the ceiling, so I’ll see what you do and decide how I’m going to complete my 7.2.4 setup in the near future. Thanks!
in big space I would invest in near field sub(s) to eliminate the room completely. once you try near field you will never go back so a little warning :D
Loved the idea. Immediately subscribed as I’m interested in future updates. For the ceiling mounts, did you just drill directly into the speakers? I see that mount is for a TV and the speakers themselves don’t have any mechanism to hang them off the ceiling like svs elevation.
My "theatre" is 13'x13' x 7.9' tall. 7.4.4 with a 75" 4k tv. Love it. but i did in ceilings and in wall rears. I would have done in wall sides but to many load bearing studs and pipes etc so on wall sides.
As far as not painting your walls a darker color...one thing I did in my bedroom turned HT was install tall, thick, dark curtains on the walls which could be retracted or extended depending on the occasion. They work both as light darkeners and sound dampeners.
I love everything home theater but I have a very small house with no dedicated room for a home theater. so the living room dining room and kitchen are together lol. Puting speakers in the living room would be in the middle of everything. We have two bedrooms. A Main and a spare which we use it as a small office. So the main bedroom is also our theater. Dimensions 13'w c 15'L 8'H my set up is 5.4.4 The WAF is a Ok, she loves movies as much as I do. And it sounds amazing...movies in Atmos leave me in awe every time. So whenever I see a movie and I am amazed of how my system sounds I always wonder how the hundreds of thousands dollars dedicated theaters would sound.
7:20 - When you are serious about not wanting the speaker to fall down. lol Honestly, I think the four screws would have done it, but the extras give peace-of-mind. That room looks a bit larger than my room (actually, two rooms, but only one has the projector and speakers in). Each of my rooms are about 8ft by 9ft. The ceiling is maybe about 9ft as well. EDIT: Oh, you did show your room to be roughly 11ft square. I have three RSL CG23M shoved *into* the wall behind the screen. Six RSL CG3M for sides and four heights, and the 10s MKII sub. The recliner is right up against the window, but I put some small PSB Intro LR speakers on the window frame recently. Not hooked up yet. I will try using those as Back surrounds soon, and move the armchair forward a bit. The room is already too small for the 77" projector screen really, but not terrible. lol
Are you planning on drilling into the tops of the more premium speakers you have coming or do you have a different solution? I’m getting ready to fly Chane 740s from the ceiling…I don’t know if I can bring myself to drill into them but I can’t argue with how simple and effective that is.

Have fun. I have a small basement space 10x11x8. I have 3 seats and 7.3.4 setup. TV is LG OLED B7A 65", eyes 6' away for just over a 40 degree viewing angle. Receiver is a Sony AZ7000ES. My Marantz died and I wanted to try something different and got a good deal. Great for the un-experienced, simple, great sound but I would not recommend as it quirks and sometimes lack of premium experience for the money. Left and Right amp is a Marantz MM7025. The other 9 channels is powered by a Integra DTA-70.1. Speakers are old from when I originally got and then added from the same line with purchases off ebay. L/R JBL S312, JBL S-Center, sides JBL S38, rear and heights JBL S36. The subs are two (Power Sound Audio) PSA S3000i and one PSA XS-30se. Reavon X200 for disc plaback and I generally use my Zidoo Z9X Pro for media files with 210TB of media attached to it.
@GeorgeTheaterAtHome I'm not sure what your plans are for running the speaker wire, but crown molding works great for hiding the runs in a finished room. Just get the crown thick enough that will cover the holes in the wall and ceiling whether you're fishing down the wall or across the ceiling.
By the way, just wanted to add that a huge thank you for posting the links to the wall mount for the ceiling and the wall, that is very helpful! Can you add a link for the drywall anchors you used for installing the wall mounts? Thanks!
First thought: “It's a bold strategy, Cotton. Let's see if it pays off for 'em”. Why it bugs me (camera angles may be contributing but… Valencia Seating Height: 43.5” Ear level: est~ 40.5” B5: Sb, surround height 45.5(top)” C5 guessing 30(top)” T5 mains 35.4(Top)” I know you said you are replacing surrounds but consider height to your ears a huge factor to creating a base layer. The center if not at ear level needs to be angled aggressively to hit your ears or suffer dialogue problems. Main tweeters always flat at ear level (IMHO). Place a laser level on the top of the main speakers and point at the other surrounds (do the tweeters match ear level?) These very small details can lose your detailed immersion. You are a big proponent on directionality. I’m a little more critical of the base layer, because I still find myself tuning 7.1. Ears rule the room, one plane across the base layer and a laser tape measure is a beautiful thing. Keep one in your armchair.
guys remember he is just starting from scratch. with using a TV you dont have to have a fully dark room . Its a process . sit back and follow this journey enjoy the ride
Hi, I think it would be a great idea to use a 'Voice of God' speaker exactly at the ceiling fan location. You would likely to feel a more personal immersive Auro 3d experience.
i dont think u need a center channel here. I dont think u need towers for L and R... Get the blook shelfs and mount beside TV, and toe in for picture to sound coherence of phantom center. will be just like an acoustically transparent screen setup. and I dont think rz30 can process 11 channels. you need an rz50
Decent bookshelves aren't usually that much cheaper once you factor in decent mounts or stands. May as well pay the bit extra for the towers. And if you're doing a phantom centre the centre of the TV can go around normal eye height which should be the same or similar as ear height on towers.
I’m not mad at you. I have two theaters. A living room setup and a repurposed spare bedroom with 3 seats. Painted tricorn black for 7.2.4 with all DIY speakers. I’m using a tv in front of the window since I had no other wall to use for now.
I think it would sound better with 5.1.2. My humble opinion. And do you really need and extra amp? I know for DYNAMICS...But for such a small room, I wonder .
You should move your front heights to the front of the room. TECHNODAD debunked that way of thinking. He has a video called ‘Dolby was wrong! Place your Atmos speakers here instead’ where he talks about it. Changed the game for me. Cheers
This man’s ‘tiny’ home theater is almost as big as my basement theater. Incidentally my basement theater is just over 11 ft wide, open to the rear but a doorway limits my space to around 12-13 ft deep. Still rocking 120” screen. Couple of observations: #1 I hope you’re lining every inch of those walls with at least 3-4 inches of acoustic insulation with that many speakers. #2 those side surrounds are going to murder someone. Literal homicide. I have close walls like that and opted for bipolar surrounds to keep you from having one surround with an open line to your brain hole.
I spent less on the 11 speakers total than a lot of people spend on a single speaker. You can definitely build a high-performing system without spending insane money.
@@GeorgeTheaterAtHome I hope I didn't come off harsh, I was thinking about those with a low budget. Yes, you can purchase all 11 Monolith speakers for $1200, less the subwoofer. Around $900 if you go for the 4-inch Monoliths, which would be just as good in such a small room. And you could most certainly just use an AVR on its own and achieve the same results. I have full Klipsch speakers and 3 Polk HST-12 subs in my home theater room using a processor and OSD amps and I love it. But thinking about converting one of the spare bedrooms to a small HT when it's just me and the wife. You've given me ideas and I appreciate that.
Watching a movie by myself? Yup. Every time now. Nobody cares and nobody else here now. Kinda sux - kinda don't. Building a small room HT 7.1.4 would be an awesome single seat kick a$$ gaming room. hehehe BTW, It's only "silly" to have 11 speakers in a small room until you turn it on! 😁 Enjoy big boy! An alternate route to doing this is to buy an Apple Vision Pro, which gives you a massive screen and Spatial Audio in a headset you can use on any chair or couch. Plus, it's super-portable! The main thing you'll miss is bass, especially tactile bass and/or bass shakers. There's no way to hook them up, and there's no way to send multi-channel audio from it to a receiver.

And some wall treatment, some carpet squares stapled to the wall do amazing.

Second sub in a small space helps loads with evening out the base. Agree not much need for SPL but really helps balance things out.

I also have 2 HT, 7.2.6 in the garage, 5.2 in the living room , I have those same mounts for my height channels that you are using for the surrounds

Ideal size for trying some of the streaming/TV shows in Atmos.

And it sounds amazing...movies in Atmos leave me in awe every time.
So whenever I see a movie and I am amazed of how my system sounds I always wonder how the hundreds of thousands dollars dedicated theaters would sound.

Honestly, I think the four screws would have done it, but the extras give peace-of-mind.
That room looks a bit larger than my room (actually, two rooms, but only one has the projector and speakers in).
Each of my rooms are about 8ft by 9ft. The ceiling is maybe about 9ft as well.
EDIT: Oh, you did show your room to be roughly 11ft square.
I have three RSL CG23M shoved *into* the wall behind the screen.
Six RSL CG3M for sides and four heights, and the 10s MKII sub.
The recliner is right up against the window, but I put some small PSB Intro LR speakers on the window frame recently. Not hooked up yet.
I will try using those as Back surrounds soon, and move the armchair forward a bit.
The room is already too small for the 77" projector screen really, but not terrible. lol

Are you planning on drilling into the tops of the more premium speakers you have coming or do you have a different solution? I’m getting ready to fly Chane 740s from the ceiling…I don’t know if I can bring myself to drill into them but I can’t argue with how simple and effective that is.
The new speakers include a ceiling mount attached to them. A friend of mine mounted Chane speakers to his ceiling. You can see it here

Have fun. I have a small basement space 10x11x8. I have 3 seats and 7.3.4 setup. TV is LG OLED B7A 65", eyes 6' away for just over a 40 degree viewing angle. Receiver is a Sony AZ7000ES. My Marantz died and I wanted to try something different and got a good deal. Great for the un-experienced, simple, great sound but I would not recommend as it quirks and sometimes lack of premium experience for the money. Left and Right amp is a Marantz MM7025. The other 9 channels is powered by a Integra DTA-70.1. Speakers are old from when I originally got and then added from the same line with purchases off ebay. L/R JBL S312, JBL S-Center, sides JBL S38, rear and heights JBL S36. The subs are two (Power Sound Audio) PSA S3000i and one PSA XS-30se. Reavon X200 for disc plaback and I generally use my Zidoo Z9X Pro for media files with 210TB of media attached to it.
I’m thinking of doing something like this, with Polk XT15 all around, 7.1.4 with a svs sb2000 sub.
That would be a great setup!

@GeorgeTheaterAtHome I'm not sure what your plans are for running the speaker wire, but crown molding works great for hiding the runs in a finished room. Just get the crown thick enough that will cover the holes in the wall and ceiling whether you're fishing down the wall or across the ceiling.
By the way, just wanted to add that a huge thank you for posting the links to the wall mount for the ceiling and the wall, that is very helpful! Can you add a link for the drywall anchors you used for installing the wall mounts? Thanks!

I know you said you are replacing surrounds but consider height to your ears a huge factor to creating a base layer. The center if not at ear level needs to be angled aggressively to hit your ears or suffer dialogue problems.
Main tweeters always flat at ear level (IMHO). Place a laser level on the top of the main speakers and point at the other surrounds (do the tweeters match ear level?) These very small details can lose your detailed immersion. You are a big proponent on directionality.
I’m a little more critical of the base layer, because I still find myself tuning 7.1. Ears rule the room, one plane across the base layer and a laser tape measure is a beautiful thing. Keep one in your armchair.

Hi, I think it would be a great idea to use a 'Voice of God' speaker exactly at the ceiling fan location. You would likely to feel a more personal immersive Auro 3d experience.

I dont think u need towers for L and R... Get the blook shelfs and mount beside TV, and toe in for picture to sound coherence of phantom center. will be just like an acoustically transparent screen setup.
and I dont think rz30 can process 11 channels. you need an rz50
Decent bookshelves aren't usually that much cheaper once you factor in decent mounts or stands. May as well pay the bit extra for the towers. And if you're doing a phantom centre the centre of the TV can go around normal eye height which should be the same or similar as ear height on towers.

I’m not mad at you. I have two theaters. A living room setup and a repurposed spare bedroom with 3 seats. Painted tricorn black for 7.2.4 with all DIY speakers. I’m using a tv in front of the window since I had no other wall to use for now.

You should move your front heights to the front of the room. TECHNODAD debunked that way of thinking. He has a video called ‘Dolby was wrong! Place your Atmos speakers here instead’ where he talks about it. Changed the game for me. Cheers

My home Theater room is 12.8ft X 12.8ft and it is my own bedroom
5.1 setup is more than enough in that room, less is more
This man’s ‘tiny’ home theater is almost as big as my basement theater. Incidentally my basement theater is just over 11 ft wide, open to the rear but a doorway limits my space to around 12-13 ft deep. Still rocking 120” screen.
Couple of observations: #1 I hope you’re lining every inch of those walls with at least 3-4 inches of acoustic insulation with that many speakers. #2 those side surrounds are going to murder someone. Literal homicide. I have close walls like that and opted for bipolar surrounds to keep you from having one surround with an open line to your brain hole.
It's funny I am building a mobile atmos theater, music recording, car shows. Budget build so far till I can get better stuff
I wish you'd have gone the budget route because not everyone is in the 1% club.
I spent less on the 11 speakers total than a lot of people spend on a single speaker. You can definitely build a high-performing system without spending insane money.
@@GeorgeTheaterAtHome I hope I didn't come off harsh, I was thinking about those with a low budget. Yes, you can purchase all 11 Monolith speakers for $1200, less the subwoofer. Around $900 if you go for the 4-inch Monoliths, which would be just as good in such a small room. And you could most certainly just use an AVR on its own and achieve the same results. I have full Klipsch speakers and 3 Polk HST-12 subs in my home theater room using a processor and OSD amps and I love it. But thinking about converting one of the spare bedrooms to a small HT when it's just me and the wife. You've given me ideas and I appreciate that.

An alternate route to doing this is to buy an Apple Vision Pro, which gives you a massive screen and Spatial Audio in a headset you can use on any chair or couch. Plus, it's super-portable! The main thing you'll miss is bass, especially tactile bass and/or bass shakers. There's no way to hook them up, and there's no way to send multi-channel audio from it to a receiver.
I'm actually really curious to try movies on the Apple Vision Pro.
