Amy Allison I guess so, but Harriet's walked in on them flirting a lot so you'd think she'd pick up on it. And senator elton felt threatened by Alex which is why he calls him Alec and doesn't like him. Also, (spoiler) Frank isn't worried about hurting Emma because of Alex.
Rachel Khan I'd have to go back and watch the Elton arc episodes to be sure, but I wonder if Elton and Frank pick up on Alex's interest in Emma because they pick up on Alex's jealousy of them? Harriet, being a woman, isn't going to generate those same vibes from Alex.
Amy Allison I guess you have a point there. My thought was that they could see the tensions between them. and I thought Alex did a good job of being professional with both of them.
The drama, the DRAMA!!! This is one case where I can completely understand Emma's blindness. Frank rescuing Harriet is a very reasonable reason for forming an infatuation with him. Unfortunately, Harriet was already infatuated with Alex. Goodness Alex, do you have to be so darn chivalrous?? DANG IT!! Ugh, I need some tea.
Oh I know! His natural charm and sweetness is being mistaken for romantic interest.... I am not looking forward go the confrontation scene with Emma and Harriet- I don't want them to be angry at each other. I'll join you for tea, that sounds lovely.
Oh, good. Everyone deserves tea. I'm thinking maybe we should save some for Harriet and Emma in a few weeks. (Well, maybe not from this tea party. It might be gross by the time this confusion comes to a head. But we could always make them some more. :P )
Did Alex just say Jane got a new car? HELLO! Frank's been showering her with gifts, it would appear. I love that they slipped that in. Also, I love that he was going to call Annie to make another bet. I like seeing the Annie is his friend, too.
Emma. You can't just say vague things that apply to several people in your social circle when describing someone particular. Also this is the exact opposite of not-interfering....
DarkLightAvenger * I feel kinda weird that there is a maybe 5% male commenter rate on these videos. Do most of the other guys just have no thoughts, or are we that much of a minority? Hmmm, yeah, I am going to watch some weapon reviews or something after this. Right after rewatching the most recent one, because episode 70 of Emma Approved is the new Episode 98. (Referring to Lizzie Bennet diaries here).
TheFanGirlMichelle Oh gosh that's going to be the equivalent of the picnic isn't it!? Oh gosh, how did I not think of that! Shiz! My favourite scene is coming soon, it's a shame it's in the end :(
Oh I know for sure it will break mine... I hate it when they fight. It makes me sad. But then them making up is really cute, sooo... But Boxx will make me feel embarrassed because that's totally something I would do, say something without really thinking it through.
wohooo! I see Jane and Frank in next video! favorite quote from this video: "What are you doing?" "I'm just texting Annie to see if she wants to make another bet..."
That. Was. Adorable. The way Alex and Emma stared at each other a little longer than normal after he offered to carpool with Harriet, and how they automatically got closer when Harriet left, and how Emma started adjusting her clothes and fixing her hair. So cute!
It's funny, tragic, and stupid. Emma, you're doing it again....poor Harriet, can't she see that Alex actually treats her like a little sister? Of course not all of the men in the world will treat her that way, but Alex will. And he is for EMMA. So, he's off-limits!
Something that I do miss in this adaptation is Emma's insecurity & feigned indifference towards travel. Her lack of "worldliness" like Jane Fairfax emphasizes her role as a big fish in a small pond, and that her devotion to her hypochondriac father prevents her from leaving generates sympathy. We have a little of it with her jealousy of Jane, but the fear of leaving home is a common and relatable theme that would have been interesting to explore. With Emma's pontification in front of the camera at all times, its rare we get insight into her inner life in this adaptation. Plus the lovely scene where Knightley comforts Emma about this before the cringe-worthy events in Box Hill would have been nice on screen. All and all though, if this is my only complaint, you guys are doing excellently!! :)
Oh this was rough. Oh Harriet...and Emma for not seeing! But I get so much strength from the thought of Alex and Annie routinely texting each other with bets about Emma.
AAAAAHHHHHHHH!!! This is always one of my favourite parts in the original and the adaptations. I love love love how they played it out, also the part about Emma telling her not to confuse admiration with love. Oh my gosh, I love it.
Oh, boy. This is bad, this is really really bad. It was awful to read it, now it's worst seeing it. Oh, Emma, when you will learn your lesson? And: HARRIET, PLEASE, STOP BEING SUCH A SWEETHEART. YOU'LL KILL ME. Alex too. Please, so perfect. I can't even.
Look at how Alex's face changes between the moment when Harriet thanks him, and the moment when Emma thanks him a second later: 4:14. "Sure no problem buddy!" vs. so... very... SOULFUL!
Oh, god. This is getting to the good part and I am equally excited for and dreading what's coming next. They're both talking about two very different things. Also, Emma's already floundering with the two events she's set them up for . She's "swamped". Yeah, I can almost see what the build-up is going to be. Edit: WHAT IS THAT PREVIEW? Pissy Jane, smug Frank, and scared(?) Emma.
Oh man this made me excited and so anxious at the same time! Poor Harriet. Poor Emma. I hope this doesn't end up in a tearful argument. I really love Emma and Harriet's relationship. Also why does Alex have to be so chivalrous? He's terribly sweet :P Great episode as usual!
Oh Emma, the "mix-up" that I still cringe over... just like in the BBC series and in the books I'm yelling at the screen! JUST SAY THE NAME! ... it would save you 40 episodes lol Still love it though!
I love the look Alex gives Emma after he helps Harriet...It's like "Hey...hey...I'm super nice..look at the nice thing I did...I'm helping your/our friend...aren't you proud?"
This is getting interesting we are about 3/4 of the way through right!? Eeeekkkk can't wait till she finally wakes up and realises its Alex she loves!!!!!
4:22 The moment when I got butterflies. I know that things always get worse before they get better (and am dreading that) but I love this slower developing romance. It makes it feel so natural and real.
I know everyone is freaking out because poor Harriet, but that ''I'm just texting Annie to see if she wants to make another bet'' omg. I just loved it.
oh my gosh. jane and frank in the same frame. this will be interesting to say the least. oh and emma is soo blinded she's missing everything frank being at jane's, confusing who harriet likes .. can't wait to see how this trainwreck unfolds
Did anyone else squeal over how adorable it was when Emma and Alex automatically moved closer together when Harriet left?! I know it might be just so it doesn't look so awkward having an empty space between them, BUT IT WAS ADORABLE! Plus -- to me at least -- it looked like there was less space between them than in previous episodes!
Poor Harriet. Oh, Emma. Emma, Emma, Emma. And I actually feel bad for Alex too. I have often been in the situation of having someone think you like them just because you like doing nice things for people in general. I would think he would be perceptive enough to see Harriet's crush...but then, he is used to her awkwardness, so he is probably just chalking her nervous behavior up to that. I am so nervous for what happens next and so excited for what happens after what happens next!!!
The first part of this series went so slowly and now I feel like everything is happening faster than I want it to! SLOW DOWN, DON'T GET TO THE END YET. I'M ENJOYING THIS TOO MUCH. gahhhhhh, it's like reading the book and noticing you're reaching the end. You want things resolved but you don't want it to be over.
I can't stop laughing at the simultaneously awkward and sweet and friendly conversation full of mixed messages between Emma and Harriet. Although it's weird how the matchmaker in Emma could even consider the idea that a guy (Frank) who she believes likes her would so quickly shift his romantic focus onto Harriet. Harriet's great, but she isn't the same 'type' (Type A personality, outspoken, charismatic, social) as Emma. On another note, I feel ya, Harriet. Being the little sister figure to all the awesome guys can really suck.
I am rewatching it and I really wish that there were episode summaries in the description because sometimes I am on a binge and I forget the things that happened. XD
4:19 as soon as Harriet is gone they both gracefully slide in :) and Alex is finding any excuse to marginalize his competition for Emma's attention. I love the great attention to detail these people have for the story.
Good God. What horrible advice. Please, please don't "let his behavior guide yours", Harriet. If you wait around to figure out the feelings of some person you're either going to end up burned, sad, confused, or all of the above. You don't NEED to wait around for some guy to tell you he likes you. Just go up to him and ask him. It may be scary and you may be let down, but at least then you'll know and you can look for someone else. And besides, always waiting for the guy to make the move probably puts a lot of pressure on him, don't you think?
It's true to the book, though: "I do not advise you to give way to it, Harriet. I do not by any means engage for its being returned. Consider what you are about. Perhaps it will be wisest in you to check your feelings while you can: at any rate do not let them carry you far, unless you are persuaded of his liking you. Be observant of him. Let his behaviour be the guide of your sensations." -Emma, ch. 40
In a modern context, that advice doesn't make a lot of sense. However, Emma has already proven that she doesn't give the best advice when it comes to relationships. (Kind of ironic given that matchmaking is part of her profession). Plus, she thinks she is now trying to protect Harriet after the whole Elton fiasco.
Well to be completely fair to Emma, she didn't tell Harriet to wait for the guy to tell her he likes her, but wait until she is sure of his feelings if there are any. It's not the best advice, but it's good, why go through the trouble and awkwardness of asking a guy out if you don't even have a few hints? They can misguide you, obviously, but often they are helpful clues to figuring things out.
Question (*minor spoiler for those who haven't read the novel*): Did this adaptation have a scene based on the "brother and sister! no indeed" scene in the book right before Emma and Knightley dance? I love that scene in every adaptation because it is often the first real sign that Knightley's feelings for Emma are not brotherly in nature, but I cannot remembering having seen an equivalent exchange in Emma Approved. Did they skip it or did I miss it?
I think there were these little lines that serve this purpose as well as just comedic effect - when Emma accidentally compliments Alex and he's happy about it (like with the haircut and "you've just called me hot" recently)...
I think there was something similar early on, when discussing how Emma's sister married Alex's brother. I'm pretty sure one of them said something about practically being siblings because of that.
"...If he tries to spend time alone with you." Oh Emma, oh, oh, OH Emma. There isn't a facepalm strong enough in the world right now.
Oh I know!
And yet she doesn't notice her very words coming true in front of her.
That's what I was thinking.
I love how Emma and Alex scoot closer together when Harriet gets up to leave. Poor Harriet...but who can blame her?
Well it's kind of Harriet's fault... Anyone could see that Alex likes Emma.
Rachel Khan
Maybe not. We only see them flirt when they're alone together. And as others have pointed out, Alex is kind and chivalrous with everyone.
Rachel Khan
I'd have to go back and watch the Elton arc episodes to be sure, but I wonder if Elton and Frank pick up on Alex's interest in Emma because they pick up on Alex's jealousy of them? Harriet, being a woman, isn't going to generate those same vibes from Alex.
Amy Allison I guess you have a point there. My thought was that they could see the tensions between them. and I thought Alex did a good job of being professional with both of them.
"I have decided to stop interfering in her personal life"
*Alex starts laughing*
The drama, the DRAMA!!! This is one case where I can completely understand Emma's blindness. Frank rescuing Harriet is a very reasonable reason for forming an infatuation with him. Can I get in on this tea? We can all have a "this is painful to watch" tea party.
Lindy Oates Sure! We can bring scones and lots of tissues.
I need some of this tea party action. I'll bring my homemade tea cookies!
Oh, good. Everyone deserves tea. I'm thinking maybe we should save some for Harriet and Emma in a few weeks. (Well, maybe not from this tea party. It might be gross by the time this confusion comes to a head. But we could always make them some more. :P )

'Future developments' ahahahaha
"It's entirely up to them". Emma trying to convince herself that she isn't involved is adorable.

I wonder how many bets have transpired between Alex and Annie over Emma's actions! The last lines from the past two episodes have been great!
They bet on everything. I bet Emma and Alex bet if Ryan and Annie were going to get together and that's why he was ticked that she was right.
wohooo! I see Jane and Frank in next video!

Reason #425 why I love Frank Churchill: he can be (adorably) unaffected to two pissed off women sitting right next to him.
He looks really cute in what he's wearing, too!
And the two women are pissed off at him for completely different reasons.
Oh man this is super duper awkward. They are having very different conversations that's for sure.
The poor darlings...
This episode should be renamed to CAR CRASH, because that is what this is leading into.
JANE AND FRANK IN THE PREVIEW!!!!
dying, guys. dying.
Frank, Jane, and Emma all together in the next episode. OH LORDIE. I can't even.
The way Emma pushes Alex out of her office in the end 😻 adorable!

Good question...
This is the first time I've really felt a solid connection between the events and characterization of the book and this adaptation. I like it. :)
Everyone is going Oh Emma, or Oh Harriet. But I'm just admiring the "Oh Frank, Stop it Frank. Frank. Frank!" Jane is enduring in the preview.
Man I love these series.
This is getting interesting we are about 3/4 of the way through right!? Eeeekkkk can't wait till she finally wakes up and realises its Alex she loves!!!!!
I read on their statement at VidCon that this video series might actually continue past the end of the novel. I don't know, should be interesting.
Rose Lorraine Yeah, they didn't start the series from where the novel began. I'm excited to see how they're going to interpret this.
So, has anyone else noticed that Alex is EVERYWHERE? I keep seeing him in commercials and they throw me off every time.
4:22 The moment when I got butterflies. I know that things always get worse before they get better (and am dreading that) but I love this slower developing romance. It makes it feel so natural and real.
Watching these gives me an attachment to and sympathy for Harriet I never had in the book or films. Poor thing 😢
It's moving so fast now, I can't wait. Plus the next episode looks as though it might be the reveal of Jane and Frank! Emma is going to flip out!

I know it might be just so it doesn't look so awkward having an empty space between them, BUT IT WAS ADORABLE! Plus -- to me at least -- it looked like there was less space between them than in previous episodes!
the feels. ALL THE FEELS.
These next few episodes better go up in a timely fashion. I know what happens....and I still can't handle it.
The first part of this series went so slowly and now I feel like everything is happening faster than I want it to! SLOW DOWN, DON'T GET TO THE END YET. I can't stop laughing at the simultaneously awkward and sweet and friendly conversation full of mixed messages between Emma and Harriet. Although it's weird how the matchmaker in Emma could even consider the idea that a guy (Frank) who she believes likes her would so quickly shift his romantic focus onto Harriet. ahh i love and hate the emma and harriet misunderstanding so much! the feels! emma, what are you doing? poor harriet
OH MY GOD THIS SITUATION IS MAKING ME FEEL SO AWKWARD AND I'M NOT EVEN INVOLVED. AND ALSO THESE ARE FICTIONAL CHARACTERS.
Finally realised that Boxx represents Box Hill in the book. ^^
i was laughing the whole time bc emma was talking about frank and harriet about knightley... :D hehehee this is gonna be so fun!!!
Guh I'm forever gushing over Alex. haha Alex texting Annie to make another bet, actually perfect. Ah Frank is back next episode!
alex is so dang chivalrous it's adorable and painful to watch
EMMA NO NO NO!! CAN'T YOU SEE IT'S NOT FRANK SHE'S TALKING ABOUT BUT ALEX?!?!?!
I must have screamed "NO, EMMA" at my computer at least five times....
Mr. Knightley I want in on that bet!!! No way is Emma gonna stay outta this one!
Wait so Harriet is like Jane Bennet? Never thought they would be so alike.
No?
Yes?
How is she Jane?
Rachel Khan
Alex said that Harriet likes Frank because she likes everyone and always sees the best in them. That's classic Jane Bennet.
Oh okay, yes, in that aspect. I see what you're saying. I thought you meant they were the same person.
Just saw Joanna on Rizzoli and Isles which was fun!
Oh dear, the next few episodes are going to be interesting...and I'm probably not going to stop laughing for a while now.
God i love emma!!!! this is so frustrating but funny at the same time
Every time they say "Jane" I think Bennet. I was like"Jane is 'carpooling' with Knightly now??? Oh wait, Fairfax."
4:19 as soon as Harriet is gone they both gracefully slide in :) and Alex is finding any excuse to marginalize his competition for Emma's attention. I love the great attention to detail these people have for the story.
Literally the entire episode I was just saying, "Oh God Emma, shut up!"
It's true to the book, though:
"I do not advise you to give way to it, Harriet.
Possibly the way they keep saying how weird it is to say "our siblings"? Like in Ep. 31 for example.
