I think the most brutal war of middle was “ the war of the powers” it happened during the years of the trees,when the Valar decided to go to war for the sake of the elves,they invaded middle earth,they laid siege to Utumno,unroofed it and went to the furthest corner of the fortress where we know Tulkas as the champion of the valar wrestled Melkor and defeated him taking him captive to Aman.
I think the kinslayings were pretty bad, not because of the brutality necessarily, because it was fought between the race and were supposed to be allies

You had legions of orcs chopping off the heads of men making their last stand and piling them in a giant mound like a hill of gold. Gelmir got his hands, feet and head chopped off in front of his brother after being blinded. Fingon got beat into dust by a bunch of Balrogs. I would say that it was sad, but Tolkien described some rather barbaric acts of violence in this battle. @rjb639
