  • Animal Collective's 'Time Skiffs' marks their first album in six years, and it's their most pop-leaning effort yet. The songs are far less abrasive than those on their early albums 'Feels' and 'Merriweather Post Pavilion,' which gained popularity thanks to early '00s music blogs. But is Animal Collective's approachable sound a good thing? Steve and Ian share their thoughts on the latest episode of Indiecast.

Where does 'Time Skiffs' hold up in the AnCo discography?

I've been a fan of Animal Collective since the lead-up to Centipede Hz, and I never got the insular criticism of the internet community of "accessibility" or "abrasive" or "too grating/annoying." Maybe it's because I'm not part of the blogosphere that sees music in those contexts, but what draws me to them is just the full embrace they have of whatever sounds they're working with at the moment. Review adoration/adulation was not really a part of why I love this band--in fact, "My Girls" was recommended via UA-cam algorithm, and I've fallen deeper into the rabbit hole since haha 😅. Thank you guys for talking about the group by the way! ❤

Animal Collective are my favourite band of all time by quite some miles and I first saw them post Sung Tongs in the build up to Feels when their set was basically half of each (and when Panda Bear still played the drums on The Purple Bottle when they did it live which seems to be very rare subsequently)
But Centipede Hz is a definite reaction to the massive success of MPP. It's also the one Animal Collective record that took me a long time to gel with (should have listened stoned).
Their first three albums are often described as experimental but a big part of that experimentalism is with noise (as in the genre) as well as psyche folk. And part of the joy of unpicking those albums is not just picking out the beautiful part strung throughout which is what I did initially them but learning to enjoy that abrasiveness.
And Painting With probably isn't best described as annoying but more like maximalist. It's so in your face and very immediately bright and cheery and upbeat. Then you hear it doing amazing weird and cool stuff with the music and staccato vocals and it makes that makes your head swirl with these pop sounds. And I totally get that if you listen to it and it doesn't click for you it must be annoying because it's so full on as an albums.

Don't criticize these guys' takes on music in the comment section, even though they made careers out of criticizing people's art. They will shadow ban you
