    It's a cape horn windvane and I highly recommend them, they have great customer service and the product itself is fantastic. Ours went over 15 years with almost no maintenance and without a single issue. On this particular crossing we had the first problem ever and fortunately it was just a small retaining bolt that cracked that we didn't have a backup for. Once we reached SF Cape Horn sent us the replacement part free of charge and it took me all of 10 minutes to replace it.

    Most cruising yachts from the west coast head to Hawaii in April - June and return in July - Sept. Heading back from Hawaii in the middle of winter is certainly done by delivery skippers, but the odds of hitting terrible weather are much higher due to the powerful lows that cross the northern pacific in the Winter.

    I've learned that wind vane can break here for the first time. Thanks for this video. Very nice documentary.

    Nice job. Really get a good feel for the trip. I am sure there was much more but you can only upload so much. Education is over rated, keep the videos coming! Ha. Thanks again. It was fun to watch..

    Interesting. I have a ham ticket since 1970. I would use one on the boat all the time.

    MrEllie, yup, that's our boat! After many great years of cruising it's time to settle down for a few years and help pay for our daughter's education.

    I've always wanted to sail so I could be like the great men you read about in history books, Columbus, James Cook.

    How come it took days to go from broken windvane to electric self steer?

    • @toddhuss
      @toddhuss  7 років тому

      Great question! The boat was holding a course so well with the helm lashed that there wasn't any reason to use the autopilot (and the electricity it requires) until we needed to start sailing to the precise waypoint of the golden gate. Most boats can't hold a course on a broad reach in seas with a lashed helm (including my current Norseman 447 on which I've tried unsuccessfully). Whereas the Hans Christian 38 amazingly could.
