- Rich & I take a tour of Cameron Airpark Estates in Cameron Park, California. This unique neighborhood is located right next to the Cameron Park Airport, with the homes all having their own hangars so the home owners can store their aircraft, roll it out onto the street and taxi right to the airport runway for take-off. Note the wide streets and low street signs to accommodate the planes.

I think it's mostly because I don't live there, and have my own plane. Big wide open empty streets, lovely weather and surroundings. Damn, this really is the dream.
But just think of all the money you’re saving on property taxes and maintenance on your aircraft! (I’m guessing money isn’t too much of a problem for the folks that live here). :)
This looks like something out of Back to the Future, where everyone has their own plane to fly. Truly a utopian vision, though only a rich person's reality.

My brother had a similar situation in MS he has a Mooney we would leave his driveway and fly to the white river in ARK to go fly fishing it was awesome.

I was a driving instructor for teenagers that just received their instruction permits. When I would instruct the teenagers living in the Cameron Airpark Estates, I found that they were the best drivers. They already learned how to fly a couple of years ago. Driving was hardly a challenge. They knew how to look at the dials and keep the speed right on the posted speed limit. They were very fast learners. I really enjoyed teaching them how to drive.
Thanks very much for the insight, Kay! Yes, I guess they learned to pay attention carefully when learning how to fly! Planes are not very forgiving if you spend too much time staring at your phone. :) Cars really aren't either!

Gliding looks like lots of fun! I know a few pilots that consider it more like "real" flying than going up with a motor! Those Azub's are amazing trikes!

Perfect neighborhood for a car enthusiast. Massive roads, tons of space, and its probably loud most of the day sooo realistically there’s little to no danger working on your project car, or bike, or really whatever, not that it matters considering you have a monolithic garage with all the insulation and soundproofing you could get for a multi million dollar neighborhood. Basically it’s a chop shop with a house tacked on

The neighborhood: no it’s a mini hanger
Imagine if someone had a Ju-87b Stuka dive bomber and was flying it when a WWII veteran was nearby.
I actually went to see an old B-17 that was still flying when it stopped at a local Air Force base and they had old WW2 pilots there, both American and German. They were all talking and laughing together. The B-17 pilot said they were terrified of the German fighter pilots and the Americans felt like "sitting ducks" in the B-17, while the German fighter pilot said they were all terrified of attacking the B-17, with all it's guns. I guess everyone was terrified!

Hi Wright. There are a number of cool aircraft styled mailboxes in that neighborhood! That Beech is amazing! Looks like a mini DC-3.
@@bikestrikesrazors The Beech 18 is one of those long term winners, like the C-47, DC-6, Lockheed Models 10 and 12 and many others. Jets are cool but I've been drawn to props since I was a boy in the '50s. OH....I'm thinking of getting a trike from the VA due to my multiple myeloma and the resultant chronic lower back pain. Lots of paperwork and roadblocks involved but I think I can do it. And I'm no stranger to bikes, having been in the bike business from the fall of '72 to the early 1980s. Had a Masi Gran Criterium; Columbus tubes, all Campy Record, Teledyne BB spindle and Zeus titanium body alloy cog freewheel. It was as smooth as the wind. I was seriously into bikes and miss them terribly, so a good recumbent makes sense.
@@wrightflyer7855 Wow, '72 to the early 80's was the golden age for the California Masi brand. I've talked to a number of folks that have gotten their trikes from the VA, so it can be done! I can see how there'd be a lot of paperwork.
If I was ever able to buy a plane, it would be something like that Beech. They're just timeless.
@@bikestrikesrazors My Masi was one of the last to come out of Italy. The shop in which I was service manager was owned by Mel Pinto, the importer. I paid $525 for it in the box at another of his stores on M street in Georgetown D.C. As for the Beech 18, I guess you've watched some of Matt Younkin's aerobatic routines. The guy is obviously a natural.
@@wrightflyer7855 What eventually happened to your Masi? I remember when I got out of cycling for a few years back in the late 1980's, I wound up selling a few bikes that I now wish I still had. Hindsight!

It's really expensive unless you have a family member who is a pilot for a company who provide training to the sons or daughters of the pilots but that's for commercial tho if your talking about GA you can get a ppl (private pilot license) and that costs quite a bit and the prices you'll have to pay for maintenance and stuff trust me it's probs not worth since the houses are quite expensive to

Hey, Pitmaster! The trike in the Video is an ICE VTX. It's really designed to be a fast/racing trike, but it works pretty good for sightseeing, too. Some of the brands I'd recommend would be ICE and Catrike. There are a few others, such as Terra Trike and Azub, that you could look at also.
Damn the kids living there could just go to school and drop with a parachute, and call it a daily routine of them going to school

So the runway is adjacent to the residential street? Is there any sort of air traffic control?
Yep, parallel to the first large residential street, in fact I was wondering yesterday if anyone might have just landed on the street by mistake. It's hard to tell the difference between those streets and a runway. There's no organized air traffic control- you just have to get on your radio at the airport's specific frequency and announce to nearby air traffic that you're there and what you're up to. At night, if you click your radio's transmitter three times, it turns on all the airport runway lights. Wild stuff.

It looks like it could be a long taxi to reach the runway. What's the speed limit for airplanes on that road?
Yes, there are two or three block that people taxi down to get to the airport. Not sure what the speed limit is, but I've never seen anyone going faster than about 15 mph.
