3 brilliant things TN Temples did so far missed out by all. 1. Artisans / craftsman like garland makers, sculptors, devotional singers, dancers etc who had only those skills would have perished without regular income but for support by 1000s of temples round the year. In a capitalist / communist society these artisans would have had the impossible task of making a living daily be selling their music or garland which had no takers round the year and would have suffered and perished along with their craft. No wonder, supported round the year by temples, free of insecurities, these artisans focussed on their craft and produced fine pieces of arts / crafts. 2. The services of the temple like food, medicine etc were done in the name of the deity in the temple and NOT in the name of the donors. One can see the damage done to the globe by rich businessmen donating to NGOs to drive their narrow agenda, to know how donations to temple was far superior. The funds of temples promoted values thro discourses, enriched art forms, nurtured the civilisation etc instead of driving crazy agendas of big businessmen into the Society. 3. TN almost has no tamil word equivalent to zamindar / mirasdar both seem to have a urudu origin. Thus Temples seem to have held most fertile lands with almost absent large pvt ownership of land until the arrival of Islamic invasions. Temples auctioned cultivable lands in rotation ensuring distribution of cultivation rights year after year preventing extreme income / social inequality. Temple economics is far superior to capitalism and communism and is very little understood

Another brilliant episode. Smitaji’s knowledge (she knows the subject and history so well!), preparations (she has actually read the book), engaging style (that drowns out the best answer and deep knowledge from the guest), choice of erudite guest such as this one and that too on interesting topics, … continue to reinforce this as the best podcast series anywhere!
I hope, I am wrong, but people are just talking about that we have arrived but actually we don't have any agile and robust plan for that. We need much more reforms not only on economy front also on judiciary, bureaucracy, education etc.
Government needs to free up control from temple, and only then the private players can get the freedom and power to build a ecosystem for economy. This will greatly strengthen the Hindu community

@sk21719 As I know in Hindu dharma we have to search for God within self It doesn't teach us to make temples everywhere and search the god there or dig everyplace in search of God It teaches us that God is within ourself
Here the discussion is on DHARMA but in English language! The Christian and Muslim religions don't have Dharma in their culture. Remember the English proverb - By hook or crook, the end justifies the means. Sriram has like any US researcher has possibly done ONLY desk / book research (all from English scholars). Dharma cannot be categorised into one particular aspect of Sanatana civilisation like done here it is economics only - it covers king, justice, individual conduct, business conduct, family etc. Finally one will get a good feeling of the PAST - what is the use in the present situation of world affairs "in Business profit is the only purpose". Waste of time. Jai Hind
Solitude is the school of genius, but a empty brain is a devil's workshop. So, these are introduced to encourage arts and science and keep people engaged rather than being jobless or lazy. Sell a man a dream and you have miracles. Then others who are not so creative can still sustain by adding to the supply chain at different levels of contribution, direct or indirect. That sums up the dharmeconomics.
Lands were donated or given for specific use by zHindus who had problens lije marruage, childlessnes, dicease cured by their faith..since the tdmples were managed by trustees, they gave thd ksnds yk be tsjen care of by locsls based on trust b capcity..They gsve a giix part of the produce to the temple for maintenance pooja and festivals etc. But over the years with expansion oc the lesses family, the share of the temples started dwindling.. Tanatan economy be pandu
Someone explain to her how Muslims flock to set up shop outside temples while making sure Hindus cannot setup shops outside dargahs.
That's what Yogi did in kumb, shops exclusively for Hindu businessmen and traders,to maintain and safe guard the aastha of Hindus..
