    That nozzle is genius! If I understand correctly - you're "coning" the four "pie" shaped pieces of paper / cardstock or what ever it is - right? You have inspired me to start in this direction. Estes is going bankrupt, so who knows if the supply of model rocket motors will be as accessible as they have been in recent years. Thanks for sharing!

    To increase thrust. The solid fuel should burn only on the exposed surface. If the fuel were packed in solidly then the burn would occur over a circle the diameter of the rocket body, consuming the fuel from bottom to top. Instead the fuel burns over the entire empty middle surface, using the fuel from the middle out. This bigger surface area means more fuel is burned more quickly, developing more thrust. (But for less time) Did I make sense?

    • @mysticwolf2842
      @mysticwolf2842 6 років тому

      You made sense than you know, there are those that do not have the intelligence of a worm, and do not understand what you had to say., but you did make a lot if sense there.

  • @JTshoot

    Could you make the hole in the grain twice as small for an increased burn time ?

  • @456ner

    instead of using a solid dowel for the core when casting. try to make a star shaped insert to increase surface area. the two solid boosters on the shuttle had this design.

    • @eannewton3243
      @eannewton3243 10 років тому

      Sorry for digging up an old comment but this is both right and wrong.
      Using a star shaped core *will* increase the surface area but that may not be a good thing. If you have too much surface area burning at once it will only explode on ignition, too little and it won't go anywhere. The rule is "always start small".
      What NASA and the government do really does not apply to small amateur rockets. They precisely calculate and design everything ahead of time. They also work worth precisely formulated and processed propellants, using R-Candy or BP you will get different results with every batch.
      If you are interested in the theory and principles (read: lots of difficult math, physics, and chemistry) then I suggest you read "Fundamental Aspects of Solid Propellant Rockets" by Williams, Barrere, and Huang. www.dtic.mil/dtic/tr/fulltext/u2/701545.pdf Note that it is only 789 pages, while it is old and dated most of theory still holds. Realize that this is only a very basic beginner's introduction text and if you want play with the big boys then I have several thousand more pages for you to read.
      tl;dr: Don't copy what the big boys do.

    What is THEE difference between a sugar rocket engine that you cook down vs the dry method using wooden dowels and a wooden mallet ? What if any,are the performance differences ? I have had great success with the dry method. I can't see taking the extra time cooking down sugar and potassium nitrate, making a mess,ruining a pan, and risking a fire IF the results are negligible .

    Usless unless ya have folding fins plus a thermite shape charge in the front or AP.. primary an secondary. Also don't just make one.. make like 40. I made a test rocket in bed one night.. added the rcandy the next day with a piece of brass connection tube for a nozzle, it burned out the bottom, so making a strong plus light nozzle is a must... Next project.. :)

    I'm tempted to think that flight is fake. It look like a AT white lightning commercial motor, look at the flame, it is bright white, while sugar motors have no flame, and the smoke trail looks darker than a sugar motor, and the thrust curve doesn't match with the motor, according to the thrust curve, this should have just over a 1 second burn, while the flight had a 2 second burn. And a J would send that little rocket off the pad WAY faster
