Why Countries Are Landlocked + Canals

- Why are some countries landlocked? In the case of Bolivia its because they lost a war with Chile.
Ethiopia and Serbia granted independence to the parts of their countries that had a coast.
Some countries like uzbekistan, are so far inland that they are doubly landlocked, which means they are both landlocked and completely surrounded by other landlocked countries.
When a country is landlocked it can be difficult for them to trade, and they often have to rely on their neighbours. In Europe, the danube river lets many landlocked countries have some access to the black sea. As well, many canals exist which lets small ships travel deep inland, providing some of the benefits of having a coast.
Some countries may look landlocked, but when viewed closely you can see they have tiny coasts. You can watch this video I made which explores the weird borders in those situations:

Hello everybody! There are a lot of new people now. Thanks everyone for subscribing!
You may have heard that UA-cam has been a bit unreliable lately. Though I think its been unreliable in my favour given that the channel only had about 500 subscribers a month ago. Still its probably best if there is a way for you to see new uploads without having to rely on youtube. The best way to do this is with an email list, so if you want you can follow this link to sign up for the list:

Also if you prefer you can use the subreddit, which has the added benefit of a comment section:

Say that to Swiss Navy, they patrol their own Swiss lakes. In Vietnam the River Patrol Boats were under the command of the US Navy, not the US Army. Even they patrolled the waterways inside South Vietnam, not the sea. During the Rhodesian war, the Rhodesian Army converted the ferry "Ubique" into a warship by placing heavy Soviet machineguns on the upper deck. So, a instant Navy. Funny thing that the
Word "Stan" is old Persian
And it meant "land" .....
Iraq Fuckin CountryBall it’s not old persian it is just persian, like new persian, as they speak it today in Iran, Afghanistan and Tajikistan. Therefore there are many words in persian that end with „Stan“ not referring to any country’s. Kindergarten means „Kodakistan“ place of the children’s. Or „Rigestan“ means desert, „qabrestan“ means graveyard.
So, Afghaniland?
A better translation is land of, so Afghanistan would be "land of afghani"

Really good video. I actually learned a lot, and I consider myself good in political geography :) Thanks!
but caspian sea isnt a sea, its considered a lake, world's biggest infact
Then why isn't Azerbaijan coloured in red
But there are salt water lakes in Africa so if you consider those lakes then the Caspian is a lake
***** the fact its salty, doesnt mean its a sea
I remember reading the reason why the Caspian is considered a sea is because of its depth. Seas are deeper than lakes.
Abdigani Sugal Baikal lake is 2000 feet deeper than the Caspian Sea yet it is isn't considered a sea.

Hi, a small error: The port of Switzerland is not on the rhone in Geneva, but on the Rhine in Basel. From where larger river ships go to. In the 1960s, there was a plan to build a canal through switzerland to connect the rhone and rhine. Nothing was done, so that rhone can be only be used for very small ships.

It's worth mentioning that Bolivia lost its coast in a war they started with Chile to gain more coast and even formed a secret alliance with Peru to take more land from Chile. They lost.
Brett Jory lol that’s tough and karma
@@fortzprod.8096 lol nice name
That is false. Bolivia never intended to invade Chile. The only time that Bolivia and Peru were a possible threat to Chile (according to Chilean political leaders of the time) was during the Bolivian-Peruvian confederation which the Chileans made sure to split. The reason for the new alliance was to defend itself against a possible new Chilean invasion due to the strong increase of Chilean companies in the territories previously considered Bolivian. In addition, Bolivia left the war early because it was not in the best conditions for a war due to internal problems in the country, therefore it does not make sense that it would have been planning to invade Chile.
Haha you sound so excited!

Nice video. You should do a full video on the states of the United States which are not on the ocean but have access to shipping due to rivers and canals. Such as the ones you mentioned-- the St Lawrence Seaway and the Mississippi River, plus the Ohio and Missouri rivers. And on the West Coast, the Columbia and Snake River system actually gives the state of Idaho access to the ocean with one port city (Lewiston). So the majority of U.S. states have sea access somehow.
Also the city of Istanbul is going to be a Island.
The reason why is due to the Bosporus strait, which is crowded with ship traffic.
So this is for so trade can get somewhere much easier and faster

I use inkscape to make all my drawings. I make them 1280 by 720 which is the resolution of a youtube video. Then I stitch them together with openshot video editor, which is for linux. If I was on something else I would just be using the default video editing software. Its pretty basic and it does limit what I can do, but for most purposes its sufficient.
You forgot that switzerland has a connection to the ocean wis the RHEIN. And I think the Rhein is an international Canal.
You forgot about virtually landlocked poor Russia.
Some of its ports are not navigable round the year and the rest lead to oceans or straits controlled by NATO countries.
Only a canal connecting the Caspian sea and the Persian gulf (called Iranrud) can solve the problems of :
Russia, Belarus, Central Asian Countries and Iran.
Arctic Ocean, Baltic, Black Sea, Pacific Ocean coast line. I don't think that qualify as Landlocked. Otherwise we will have to include bunch of others countries simply because of geo-politics and climate difficulties
I love how he said two so aggressive
Why doesn't Bosnia have a port? It would seem like it would be a big advantage (to private firms or to the Bosnian government) to establish one there seeing as how the country doesn't have its own port as of this time.
It wasn't necessary when it was a part of Yugoslavia, after independence the country had a lot of internal fighting so they may have just not gotten around to it yet.

In fact, Bosnia has 20 km of coastline -- although the two borders with Croatia are only about 8 km apart (the difference is accounted for by the inclusion in those 20 km of a long peninsula). Bosnia's one coastal town, Neum, is not very well suited to development as a port, however, being poorly linked at present to the country's interior.
The area is almost completely surrounded by Croatia and there just isn't a good amount of land near Neum to build a port, as some of Croatia's islands are quite close to it.
