Maya - a free apprenticeship with a master boat builde- amazing - YEAH! Aladino - having to use screws with slotted heads - you have my deepest sympathy!
I can see you removing the most damaged areas of balsa. There are many areas that were less damaged indicated by the staining. This staining is the wet/dry fungi and does not require moisture from this point to keep proliferating and metabolizing throughout the wood. This process can be stopped by treating the wood with a penetrating borate solution. In addition, adding some copper sulphate to the surfaces will deter growth on the surfaces typically where colonization starts. Both treatments are relatively inexpensive but worth their weight in gold. Friendly advice from a mycologist ; )
Indeed, agreed. Borate doesn't deteriorate as it is anorganic and stable and is a permanent solution to the rot problem provided there is enough of it. it is also said to be very effective in curing hoof thrush in horses.
Thanks for this bit of wisdom. I have a fungi problem myself. I'm going to see if this will work for me. (Edit) Just did a bit of googling. Are you basically talking about Borax? I remember my grandmother loved to clean stuff with borax back in the day (or way back in the day - decades ago), but there now appears to be some health concerns with constant exposure. Please share your experiences about this if you could.
I think I have mentioned it earlier but I'll do it again .... This is one of the few channels where one can hit the like button before the intro has even ended ..
I am very impressed with the way your taping has progressed over time great video! Your use a Time-lapse and this video was spot on. Keep up the good work can’t wait to see her in the water.
Too often I hear old grouchy people asserting young people are lazy, they don't want to work, they are just into playing and chilling and so on. That is just not true obviously. I see here so much hard work, so much skills, talent and courage. That makes me very confident in the future. Sorry for all the grouchy chaps who think young means mediocre. Keep up the great work!
I love you sweet folks and every single one of your videos. I'm so impressed with the meticulous manner in which you both work. I also love hearing/watching you play the violin. How special - a real treat for me. Keep up the great work.
Just another excellent video! This is exactly as I grew up as a lad with my dad in boat yards. It was all good too! Could watch you both work for hours doing things the right way always. Carry on!
What an outstanding example of the art of human story telling! The dialogue, Timelapse’s, Music!, and passion…..just beautiful work. Also, the boat work is nice too:)
I feel a little presumptuous in offering you very talented folks any kind of advice re: boat repairs. However, I did notice that Maya was not using a heat gun to assist in removing the formica from the chart table (maybe for some good reason not apparent to me). I have had occasion in the past to have to remove both formica and wood veneers during my boat restoration, and thought I'd gone to heaven when I discovered how easy it was to do when I heated (using high setting) the veneers at the leading edge, and continued to use heat a couple of inches in advance of my putty knife, or thin edge prybar, until the work was complete. Thanks for all you share with us. Cheers.
I love what you doing and who you are. So sweet and loving people. I am an old Swedish sailor now planten on land but I travel with you in my fantasy and dreams. i will not get in your way I promise haha. I am now follow your trip in my home waters in the west coast
Truthfully I enjoy your sailing videos better than your boat project videos but you still make most of them interesting and I'm learning a lot about sailing boats. I hope you have recovered from Covid by the time this video is out.
Foam e.g. for foam sandwich construction was in use in the 1970s and 1980s, but I seem to remember that it was mostly used for factory built boats. I remember an A-Class catamaran built with foam sandwich hulls for the 1981 World Championships. One hull snapped just in front of the main beam. Another was built entirely using form sandwich, beams and all. It wasn't stiff enough. Early days.
I’ll also add, I’m enjoying your music selection in the last few episodes. Have you changed your royalty free supplier? It seems you have a more diverse selection to choose from and you are choosing well!
What a productive and interesting episode! Great progresses in different directions toward new interiors. And it's so astonishing to watch Aladino working as a PROFESSIONAL craftman. It nicely reminds me when I built my cold-moulded 33' cutter 25 yrs ago...., but I was an amateur! Watching Aladino is a pleasure! I also admire Maya's determination and care in helping Aladino toward a common dream......... Forza!
I love your videos and so love your music. I stopped all my wood rot by spraying the balsa with normal Anifreez, the concentrated one. Keep up the good work!
One thought on the bulkhead paint. Stark white is pretty harsh. Look for a paint that has just a couple drops of red in it. It softens the look and makes the varnished woodwork really pop!
Your project has been a fascinating journey for me. As a sailor I watch and ask myself if I would have taken on a boat that needs so much. The final project will be a perfect custom sailboat that will last you for years of sailing. You and Aladino work so well together, what a great project to share! Do you ever wish that you had found a boat that would have been less labor intensive?
From Hong Kong , sorry to hear you have covid . No big deal , my daughter and my two grand children , age 7 and 9 , had it two weeks ago . They recovered after two days slight fever and they even did not vaccinated at all .
I'm a fisherman never really got into sailing but I have done some restoration on my Grady White I can't wait to see it all complete. P.S. wear your respirators all the time
Love to watch 2 masters at work!! In a way, sailing might be anticlimatical, compared to all of the work to get there. Then there will come the Joy of sailing a work of art, knowing You did it right.
Glad the boat had good bones that’s all you got left after this refit! Alidino knows his stuff and your an amazing partner , been with you for a few years now and can’t wait to see both your boat finished and your next adventures in SMC2. Stay cool stay safe stay loving
This is a very interesting story to watch, I think Magic Carpet II will be a very beautiful boat and if you don't mind I am stealing some of your ideas....haha. Good luck you two, I will be watching!
a company called McFeely has silicon bronze square drive screws of great quality...much easier to drive than slotted in many sizes.. have been using then for the past 15 years...for restoring many wood Chris Crafts
Adding up the blessings in your lives to realize your dream of sailing, refitting your boat in close proximity with the manufacturer, access to a “boat shed”/ aviary, ability to do this full time, shared dreams with your loved one. Really quite remarkable to say the least. Talk about living the dream! Great job making it all happen. You two are extraordinary and God has blessed you greatly. Furthermore, God desires you to be in heaven (1 Timothy 2:4). But salvation is a gift (Romans 6:23) which must be accepted by placing your faith in Jesus who died for your sins (John 3:16). You can put off doing the dishes or put off doing your taxes but please do not wait on this. The consequences are life and death! I’m so looking forward to seeing your boat in the water- I can only imagine how you feel!! God bless
Deep into the boat, deep into the details! Thank you for bringing us into the thick of it after your rejuvenating visit to PT. So happy to see your spirits up. Health and peace
I am very glad you decided to go all the way with the balsa insulation. That is the attitude you should keep for the entire boat restoration because nothing is worse, more time consuming, and costly then deciding to tear something you just built out because you should have fixed something underneath. But, given what I have seen from you two, you have known that all along. Maybe find a sauna somewhere to relax in after a hard and strenuous day.
Before closing the walls with liners, it may be a good idea to cover the walls with an aluminum foil, such as the one used for kitchen use. It will cut radiation heat from the sun in hot climates as well as keep your own heat inside while in cold climates. I did that on my boat using the Reflectix product and the cabin is much cooler in summer. Chhers
Totally understand your decision on replacing the rotten balsa. However, while you are doing this you have an opportunity to add additional insulation. Over the top of your balsa. Adding a inch or 25mm of a modern closed cell foam with a foil back will increase the U value by 75%!!! Even where we are in southern Turkey the outside to inside temperature in winter can be 15 degrees C. This causes mold and damage to all and everything stored. Do yourselves a favor and add more insulation to the hull and deck regardless. It will help in the cold winters and hot the summers wherever you sail. Sail Safe guys.
Great video. The quality of the videos just keep on improving, Maya! Loved Orion at the start, then the violin and the great mix of music genres later. And of course, the periods of silence. No background sounds. Loved it.
I think you guys are the best…you’re doing the kind of refit that i would love to undertake on my next one with a great boat like the cape George 36…I consider myself to be a pretty good designer, but marine layouts are much more 3 dimensional and complex where every inch in all directions makes a huge difference . Looking forward to checking up on your progress as I’ve been doing since you bought her…I can see that you are going to have one very special yacht, and I am certain that even cape George yachts are going to be admiring… One last comment you may consider… The current design for through deck chain plates are problematic. I would consider mounting the plates on outside of hull… And if there is enough fiberglass to inset them so they are flush it would be a very nice refinement…perhaps worth it to beef up bulkhead from within …of course, it’s not worth compromising the strength of the hull for this…I think it’s just the kind of attention to details to which both of you are committed… Salute to you!
Thank you, I'm so stoked you noticed! I recently signed up for a much better music service and it's made a HUGE difference. I now have way better music available to me, and it's made editing a lot more fun as well!
Maya - a free apprenticeship with a master boat builde- amazing - YEAH! Aladino - having to use screws with slotted heads - you have my deepest sympathy!
I was surprised to hear Aladino say "good enough" then of course Aladino's "good enough" = most peoples PERFECT!
😃

Good advice for the ongoing invisible devastation of fungi, many a house/structure has succumbed to fungi in timber and brick, etc!
Indeed, agreed. Borate doesn't deteriorate as it is anorganic and stable and is a permanent solution to the rot problem provided there is enough of it. it is also said to be very effective in curing hoof thrush in horses.
Yes, or alternatively rip out all the balsa and install some armaflex...
@Col Smith l

I'm starting to feel like a co-owner of this boat. Can't wait to watch them take it out in the water.
You have one of the best produced channels in all of uTube land. Your positivity is so refreshing! Keep up the great job!
And all the patreons said, "Amen!" And may the subscribers so say, too.
I am very impressed with the way your taping has progressed over time great video! Your use a Time-lapse and this video was spot on. Keep up the good work can’t wait to see her in the water.
Like the new intro,,,,balsa, the walls, saw a problem so fixing it properly not shirking…well done, just know the finish will be top notch.
Too often I hear old grouchy people asserting young people are lazy, they don't want to work, they are just into playing and chilling and so on. That is just not true obviously. Keep up the great work!
Ahh, extremely glad to see Aladino using a traditional Zollstock @ 15:50!
Its such a pleasure to watch a competent builder.
I love you sweet folks and every single one of your videos. I'm so impressed with the meticulous manner in which you both work. I also love hearing/watching you play the violin. How special - a real treat for me. Keep up the great work.
I love this project! And after last week's episode, I now knowingly appreciate the project presentation process. Best channel in all of UA-cam land.
It is looking like a brand new decades advanced Vesse...l. BEAUTIFUL WORK !!
Nice job MC2 team! Looks like more progress! Keep rolling along!! 👍👍👊👊
You guys are crazy. So so so much work. Delivering something like this must be really special
What a mammoth task you have undertaken. I am proud of you both.
I really like the music you've chosen to the balsa wood installation 🥰
It's amazing watching Tally Ho, Magic Carpet II, and Yaba` use such different methods to reach the same goal.
They need to watch sailing Yaba way better video
I like the pacing of this build video and the balance between filming and building. Well done! The music was louder and newer to me. Change is good.
Just another excellent video! This is exactly as I grew up as a lad with my dad in boat yards. It was all good too! Could watch you both work for hours doing things the right way always. Carry on!

your workmanship and skill is a pleasure to watch. It’s not often anymore people take care to keep a work project clean. Excited to see the progress!

Such wonderful craftsmanship, as always.
Oh NO Maya! THE PLAGUE! Hopefully it’s a not so awful variant! Get well soon!

Al is so precise it’s very impressive
Aladino being a craftsman. Complimenti!
I’ll also add, I’m enjoying your music selection in the last few episodes. Have you changed your royalty free supplier? It seems you have a more diverse selection to choose from and you are choosing well!
Hope you are feeling better.
Great time lapse intro beautifully showing Orion with its nebula. :)

Sorry to hear about the plywood debacle; and your Covid! Blessings for patience and renewed health. The work looks great so far!
Wow impressive work, very inspiring. Can't wait to see it done! Definitely have earned yourselves a beer at the Sirens Pub.
I love your videos and so love your music. I stopped all my wood rot by spraying the balsa with normal Anifreez, the concentrated one. Keep up the good work!
Love the timelaps of Aladino doing the repairs on the deck beams blocking great work and progress 👍
Nice lift in the backing tracks for this vid.

We didn’t have the money for a less Labour intense boat😜
Some things could have been better but this is a cape George cutter!😃
Can I tell you something? I think you and especially Aladino can easily be a consultant, helping those less knowledgeable tackle boat projects. 💗
Good to have a destroyer and a builder in your team of two ;).
👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Good progress! Thanks for sharing it with us all! Take good care!
Great show as pear boats looking great guys enjoyed your musical interlude last time super more please 🙏
From Hong Kong , sorry to hear you have covid . No big deal , my daughter and my two grand children , age 7 and 9 , had it two weeks ago . They recovered after two days slight fever and they even did not vaccinated at all .

It’s great to see how well you work together and just get it done!
Smells like progress!
I hope you got over covid ok Maya 🍇🌼. You are making great progress on the boat.
Thank you for the show very enjoyable
And you sweet soft voice is very relaxing please keep up the great work
Super progress is being made. Great work. Bad plywood! How disappointing. I am sad to hear that you have covid. I had it in January. How miserable.
Great work !!
Fair winds ⛵️
Good job on your boat..Get Well Soon!... Cheer's
Love the timelapse intro 💜
Thank you!! I’m so happy with how it turned out!
Love to watch 2 masters at work!! In a way, sailing might be anticlimatical, compared to all of the work to get there. Then there will come the Joy of sailing a work of art, knowing You did it right.
Maya, hope you get well soon, if it's Omicron it should be a fast recovery.
Wow, Maya, you have some serious strength to put into the demo. Very impressive!
Glad the boat had good bones that’s all you got left after this refit! Alidino knows his stuff and your an amazing partner , been with you for a few years now and can’t wait to see both your boat finished and your next adventures in SMC2. Stay cool stay safe stay loving
Love the “new” music.
Love the way the glass rips off the balsa 😁. 👍
This is a very interesting story to watch, I think Magic Carpet II will be a very beautiful boat and if you don't mind I am stealing some of your ideas....haha. Good luck you two, I will be watching!

Thx for the tip:)
I love the way you do it right and do more than you have to instead of cutting corners like many do who refit a boat.......
The music seems to be way better than previous videos. Works well!
Thanks for another great presentation. I enjoyed the new titles and upbeat music.
Great cinematography! Great music!
That’s is what I call progress
Wonderful music in this episode. Thanks!

Another foot tapping video. I really love your soundtracks! 🥰
The boat is going to be fabulous, I can see it in my minds eye.

Thanks for bringing us along. Most of the time a question comes to mind it is answered. Two minds planning out a complicated project very well.
Good progress, leaning forward.
Awesome job you are doing. Love it.
