I love your tip on grinding the vermiculite. I use an old coffee grinder to "powder" my egg shells for the garden and it would be perfect for grinding the vermiculite for tiny seedlings!

So exciting to see your lisianthus seedlings coming up, Nicole. Hope you have success with them. Regarding the vermiculite, be careful not to breathe the dust. There are minerals in it including asbestos. You don’t want to be taking that into your lungs or ingesting it. You may want to consider letting it sit in the grinder for some time to let the dust settle and wearing a respirator mask when you are working with it. I realize you are not working with it all day everyday and the health risk may be minuscule. I don’t want to frighten you. Just wanted to pass along that information to you in case you weren’t aware of it. Someone told me about this years ago when I mentioned I was using it in my potting mix. 🥰
Thanks! Most of todays vermiculite does not contain asbestos. The brand I’m specifically using says it does not, but you never know! I appreciate you 💐
I'm pretty decent at seed starting, but I still buy all my Lisianthus as plugs. I just don't want to mess with high maintenance Lissies. I just cannot. I have too many other things that need my time and attention.
I heard algae grows on potting mixes because they have too much organic matter. This was a big problem for me in years past, so I have experimented on my onion and lantana seeds with just growing in plain peat moss. As they grow I will add some earthworm castings and compost. I'm hoping this will make a big difference.
Thank you so much for sharing the actual prices of plugs!!! I’ve been searching and it’s difficult to find! I’m selling some this year and wanted to be sure I wasn’t off base with what I was thinking.
I did lisi plugs this year as well. Curious what size you ordered??? Thank you for doing these videos! They are so fun and informative. Are you going to be doing a separate video on sunflowers? You touched base on one video about certain varieties you're not going to continue anymore I had the same feelings as you .
As a human, even your breath, and body's heat loss, in that inclosed space can raise the humidity, possibly the temp too. Of course, there may be variations of temperature and humidity within that space normally, also the starts are wet/moist, they are surely creating additional humidity all around them, but it's not a large room, maybe a slight draft causing a variation? Just my thoughts as you were showing us the readings.
In my climate I only get one stem. You can pinch them for multiple stems but my season isn't really long enough for that. I might experiment some with that in my hoophouse.
You have changed my mind about lizianthus or they have come a long way Babe! Yours are beautiful! Thank you for giving us your sources. You’ve opened up my world to more and more food (flowers) to feed my lifelong addiction. Yes I confess, I am a flower addict. Now that I’m growing new and wonderful flowers I only wish I wasn’t 75 yo. This is really hard work! You are young and have incredible energy. I love to watch you do all those things I can no longer do. I wish I had your newly acquired tools to make the job easier. I bought a$400. drill to enable me to use an auger to dig holes but NEngland soil doesn’t permit it. Ugh! I could have better spent that money on more 🌸 Keep up the great work! Thank you so much for keeping this old lady happy!
Haha! I was getting so impatient with them last year, when they were finally about 3 inches tall in the field, I was about to pull them out- but I'm soooo glad I didn't! They were 100's more beautiful in person!
vermiculite actually may contain asbestos ..I'm thinking probably not good to make into powderly substance. Be safe when grounding up. I used it also on top of same flowers this year I look forward to seeing mine pop up as I see yours thank you for your videos and teaching us.
I’ve read a few recent studies that the majority of today’s vermiculite does not. Better safe though!m I guess. I’m ok with the small amount I’m doing, I’m not worried.
Your vermiculite is much more coarse than the bag I buy at the local Agway. I was able to give the trays a dusting straight from the bag right at the time of planting. I started most of mine the same time you started yours and haven't seen any algae growth yet so I hope the vermiculite is doing its magic. I looked at using RootShield should algae appear but decided against ordering it if not needed since a pound of the dust is $178. I started seven 200 plug trays on the mats under the domes and am seeing excellent germination but not noticing multiple plants in the cells. (Granted, these seedlings are tiny and my eyes are not what they used to be.) Happy so far with my first try at lisianthus and not it's anywhere as much work as some commentators claim. I priced lisianthus at Farmer Bailey and decided to do all them myself. Other than the seed, my main cost is the coconut coir and vermiculite I mix with my worm castings to create my starting mix.
Yea, it was labeled "fine" but it's pretty course. I have Rootshield. I was able to find it for less than $50 for a pound. I'll be watering with it. Best of luck!
I bought a small thing of gmatrol from gardener's workshop & I am thinking about ordering from a Company I found that sells large amounts of it because that's the only thing that helps last year I think- was using gnatrol every week!
Yes, superb videos and so wonderfully educational! Is it ok or is there any benefit in potting up Lisianthus plugs into 2 1/2" - 4" pots and growing them on outside for a while? I am in a zone, (Maritime Mediterranean), in which there is little to no danger of frost after Jan to Feb and temps with relatively coolish summers.
Just here to tell you I’m a new sub and I’ve BUNGED your videos. Omg I’m in loveeeee. With them and with you😂😂😂😂🤨😅😜 jk. Not really. Things just got weird. Oops First time gardener last year and no I’m convinced I need a cut flower garden because 😍
I'm growing my Lisi from seed this year. Next year I think I'm gonna buy plugs. They are taking so long to germinate. Will you plant these in your hoop house? Or out in the field? A flower farmer close to me planted them in her hoop house and had great luck. I don't have a hoop house. It's on my list to buy. Farmer Bailey has a ton of plugs. Will you buy anything else from them?
Moving 4 week old Lisianthus from 200 to 72 cell flat and believe I will be ready to do brain surgery after this feat. Except my scalpel is actually a cocktail fork. Many in the middle of the 200 cell flat didn't make it. I think it must be the flat, couldn't be the gardener! 🤪💐
My misting (just with a spray bottle) must’ve caused some of my seeds to move around, despite me trying to be as gentle as possible. I have several that have germinated BETWEEN soil blocks. 🤦🏻♀️
@@FlowerHillFarm have you have thought about using an automatic misting setup? Perfect if you can't check on them everyday. I saw some cool DIY setups on Fraser Valley Rose Farm's channel.
I did that last year! I didn't realize they had germinated- being my first year growing them, & I'm pretty sure I was continuously covering them back up with soil when misting... my husband found me a small pump mister that has very small droplets of mist, perfect for the tiny babies! It's the solo brand. It's black & white. Strongly recommend!
Nicole I'm starting Pampus Plume Celosia from seed 🤪(a lovely soft mix of colours). It's supposed to get 3' - 4' tall! It needs a much longer head start because of that. My question is- Should I start them in a deeper pot? I'm guessing such a tall plant would have deep roots. Or do you think the longer 6 packs will be fine until transplant? I just don't know how vigorous they grow, I'm excited and nervous about them. Ahhhh.🤪
I started those in soil blocks 3/4 inch about six weeks before my last frost date. They were about 8 inches tall when I planted them out and did wonderful.
Hi Nicole, I've been watching your channel for a year+ and love it! I ordered Lisi plugs from Farmer Bailey too this year, and I'm curious if you know what age the plugs are when they arrive - 6 month old plants maybe? Curious when you put your plugs in the ground as I think my climate is similar to yours with similar last frost dates! I'm wondering how you calculate the bloom time from the plugs vs starting from seed. Any of your thoughts would be appreciated! Keep the great videos coming!
I started my first ever tray of lisianthus last week and not a single sprout yet. It's been a full week today. I'm having issues being patient. I'm an experienced home gardener but my gut tells me they aren't going to work for some reason. But I'm still impatiently waiting.
@@GardenHands Thank you. I'm trying. I think it's harder this time of year when the ground is covered in snow and ice. I really need to see that green. Lol
@@kellyhenry4187 I can totally relate, it's cold and snowy at my place too. It's really exciting to start seeds, but I miss planting outside and cutting flowers! So hard to be patient this time of year. Fingers crossed for an early spring!?!
@@GardenHands Absolutely! We are expecting snow the next few days in northeast Illinois. I just keep looking back on photos from last spring and summer.
@@kellyhenry4187 It's snowing here in WI right now. We don't have much on the ground, so I guess it's okay. I've done the same thing...noted that I had pictures of daffodils in really early April. Counting the days!
I have the same question! I’d also love to know what fertilizer to use. I read it should be 1.5:1 Potassium to Nitrogen but I am struggling to find one! Nicole, share your secrets! 😉
I have heard different thins from different people. Do the LED lights need to be lowered just above the plant or can they be left higher because the illumination is higher
I think the other calculation to include is the risk factor. With plugs, you don’t take on the risk of the seedlings potentially failing. I don’t know how you quantify that, but I would think it’s another factor in favor of buying plugs.
@@FlowerHillFarm I am so glad you asked. Mine were in plugs, but had an inch or so of growth. this makes me happy knowing I wasn't taken for a ride. THANK YOU!
Excellent results. Not sure my seedlings are willing to sprout, 10 days in now. I feel I *have* to tell you, please, please, wear a N95 well fitted mask (I use one made for construction workers) if you're gonna grind vermiculite and handle it in powder form. This substance is seriously, extremely, terribly harmful to lungs when inhaled.
Please do not breath in vermiculite dust. It is an inhalation hazard, none to cause cancer. Please use only open outside up wind. Keep you and your family safe. Blessings from Southern California 🙏
WHAT!!!! and I just spent $78 for 26 plugs from Jake!!! I thought he was supposed to be wholesale?!? Omg I’m so mad now!! I had no idea how much plugs were and thought maybe that was normal. I got 26 plugs for the same price you got 210 Rosanne Brown for. Unbelievable!! 😡😡😡😡😡
I've heard about that being an issue in the past. I've read a few studies that say most of the vermiculite on the market today does not contain asbestos, although a few might!
The mine in Libby Montana that produced vermiculite contaminated with asbestos has been closed down for good for the past two decades or more. Still, not good to breathe vermiculite or any other kind of dust.

Yea, it was labeled "fine" but it's pretty course. I have Rootshield. I was able to find it for less than $50 for a pound. I'll be watering with it. Best of luck!
What are you doing for the gnats this year? I bought gnatrol but haven’t used it yet. I might’ve seen one crushing around. Thrippin gnats!
I have yellow sticky sheets and mosquito bits.
I bought a small thing of gmatrol from gardener's workshop & I am thinking about ordering from a Company I found that sells large amounts of it because that's the only thing that helps last year I think- was using gnatrol every week!
Will lisianthus seed stay viable for a year or two? I grew some last year, but not all of it.
I don't pot them up at all. You certainly can but most farmers grow them in small plug trays and put them straight into the ground.
Just here to tell you I’m a new sub and I’ve BUNGED your videos. Omg I’m in loveeeee. With them and with you😂😂😂😂🤨😅😜 jk. Not really. Things just got weird. Oops
First time gardener last year and no I’m convinced I need a cut flower garden because 😍
I'm growing my Lisi from seed this year.
Welcome Nicole 💏💏👏👍❤🌱🌼🌵🎓🎩🎅🐷🐰and every time and every year you are very very very beautiful.
Besides the sticky sheets, how do you get rid of dirt fleas.
Mine haven't popped yet and tomorrow is two weeks 😭 I hope I didn't mess them up
Where did you get dirt grinder for vermiculite.
My misting (just with a spray bottle) must’ve caused some of my seeds to move around, despite me trying to be as gentle as possible. I have several that have germinated BETWEEN soil blocks. 🤦🏻♀️
Oh no! I've had that happen.
Me too! Then others do have multiples- didn’t even think about more than 1 seed in the pellet!
I had the same issue. Only one or two seeds were displaced though, so no biggie.
How do you choose between using soil blocking and trays?
@@FlowerHillFarm Thank you! Now I can breathe! LOL Phew! I couldn't find any info on YT about it. So I hoped you could help, and you did! I thank you!
Your Vermiculite seems a lot larger than mine? 🤔 I totally understand you being cautious!
Hi Nicole! How do you use Mosquito Bits? Do you add them to water? How often do you use them? Thanks!
Lisianthus can tolerate cold! You should be good to plant them out a couple weeks or maybe 3 weeks before your last frost date.
What is a good humidity level for your seedlings?
I started my first ever tray of lisianthus last week and not a single sprout yet. It's been a full week today. I'm having issues being patient. I'm an experienced home gardener but my gut tells me they aren't going to work for some reason. But I'm still impatiently waiting.
Hang in there Kelly! They can take 2-3 weeks to germinate! I saw teeny tiny green on mine after 12 days. Fingers crossed you see green soon!
Maybe a small fan would equalize the heat and humidity??? 🙂
Hi. You started your champagne bubbles poppies now? How long to germination are these suckers? I ask, because I just ordered some from Johnny's.
Yes, it's a hoophouse experiment. They like the cold. I started them about a week ago and they're sprouting.
Nice Video
When do you start fertilizing? Mine also are just sprouting and was wondering when its a good time to start fertilizing?
I have the same question! I’d also love to know what fertilizer to use. I read it should be 1.5:1 Potassium to Nitrogen but I am struggling to find one! Nicole, share your secrets! 😉
Year 1 of trying Lisianthus from seeds. And I’m a failure. None are growing & they are covered in algae (and I have vermiculite on them) so sad!
I just realized you and another grower(pepper Harrow Farms ) also uses farmer bailey
He's one of the more popular suppliers! Great people.
I have heard different thins from different people. Do the LED lights need to be lowered just above the plant or can they be left higher because the illumination is higher
I put them very close. I lowered them after this video.
@@FlowerHillFarm Thankyou
I think the other calculation to include is the risk factor. With plugs, you don’t take on the risk of the seedlings potentially failing. I don’t know how you quantify that, but I would think it’s another factor in favor of buying plugs.
..agree, but nothin like a baby lizzy in your tray.
Mine still look this small like this at 5 weeks 😳
What’s wrong with algae growing on the grow medium?
Funny I'm uploading a video today about algae and seedlings. It competes for nutrients and water but otherwise it's typically harmless.
Sprinkle a fine layer of connamon instead of vermiculite and you wont get any fungus 😉
The poppies don't need to be stratified?
Doesn't appear so....I started them the day the packet came in the mail and germination is great so far.
Isn’t your body temp and hot breath changing the temp and humidity?
Probably! But I’m guessing it’s also the heat mats and humidity of the plants
Since is stayed that way after I left the area 👍
@@FlowerHillFarm yes that was my next question. Good you know
I spent $30. for 12 plugs last year for plugs.
Were they larger plugs? These are about the size of a nickel.
@@FlowerHillFarm I am so glad you asked. Mine were in plugs, but had an inch or so of growth. this makes me happy knowing I wasn't taken for a ride. THANK YOU!
20 below would signal the end of the world for me here in Texas. 🥶 Nope.
LOL
How much coffee do you drink? 😂 how did you deal with your fungus gnats? Those yellow sticky sheets? Take care 😊
Today? Three cups of half-caff, but I just brewed another pot so watch out!
I have yellow sticky sheets and mosquito bits.
@@FlowerHillFarm What are mosquito bits?
This is basically the size of my almost 8 week old lissies 😕
Excellent results. Not sure my seedlings are willing to sprout, 10 days in now. I feel I *have* to tell you, please, please, wear a N95 well fitted mask (I use one made for construction workers) if you're gonna grind vermiculite and handle it in powder form. This substance is seriously, extremely, terribly harmful to lungs when inhaled.
Thanks!
Please do not breath in vermiculite dust. It is an inhalation hazard, none to cause cancer. Please use only open outside up wind. Keep you and your family safe. Blessings from Southern California 🙏
And how are you and your girl So so so so much more and your son and your Mom and your DAD SO SO SO MUCH MORE and All YOUR Friends
Is there anyone who will sell Lisianthus plugs to a non commercial grower? I would want about 210 plugs.Just curious.
Look up Wholesale for the Small Scale Grower on Facebook. They sell small amounts to the public. Sales may be closed for the season, I'm not sure.
WHAT!!!! and I just spent $78 for 26 plugs from Jake!!! I thought he was supposed to be wholesale?!? Omg I’m so mad now!! I had no idea how much plugs were and thought maybe that was normal. I got 26 plugs for the same price you got 210 Rosanne Brown for. Unbelievable!! 😡😡😡😡😡
You have to be careful of vermiculite powder. Please wear a mask.
please be careful! vermiculite can sometimes have asbetos spores in it and can be cancerous! Would recommend not grinding it in your house.
