Back in O.C. Calif when I was 30 my wife heard a commercial on the radio about a P.F. show coming up. Knowing I am a Floyd fan she called the radio station (KMET - LA, “The Mighty Met”) to get information on the concert, The DJ on live radio Cynthia Fox…. said...."Congratulations, YOU are caller number 10, YOU just won tickets to the show and the Sound Check Party before the show"...
I met David Gilmour back stage. He gave us both a signed album that I have in my music room. We talked for 22 minutes. I called him…“The Master Of The Stratocaster” He smiled. I told him his music will stand the test of time with anything from Beethoven or Mozart. He smiled even bigger. I asked if I could shake both his hands that make such great guitar solos, he smiled bigger and said “Sure” and shook both hands at the same time, making a cross between us, I smiled HUGE. I asked him to describe his technique of playing guitar, he replied… “I strike a note, bend it, shake it and then release it”…. Yes, he does that quite well, better than any other guitarist I know. . I told him in my eyes he’s a “Legend“. He thanked me and said “Enjoy the show”…. during the concert after the song “Money” he looked right at me and said…. “On saxophone, another Legend, Mr. Raphael Ravenscroft” … acknowledging my comment to him. It is my favorite moment in over 300 shows I’ve seen.
I asked David…. How do you create those awesome solos?… he said….. I sit on a stool and listen to what Roger, Nick and Rick put down and play along. I listen to what I played and pick out what I like, then I put the pieces together into one piece then learn to play it as one. Our fans are fanatics for our shows to sound like the albums so I must play it correctly each time in a show. I have the concert Brochure and album on the wall with David’s picture centerfold.
Awesome man, that is the best You Tube reaction comment ever! I am so damn jealous, what a great memory and story. Gilmour is my all time number 2 right after Jimi Hendrix and just before Jimmy Page. Those 3 guys will never be forgotten or topped, at least not for me.
@@vicprovost2561 I can agree with that, and a few other legends like Eric Clapton, Billy Gibbons, Carlos Santana......
@@AliasMark69 Yes, and Jeff Beck, Eddie Van Halen, Brian May and Ritchie Blackmore!
That’s an amazing story. And not only did you meet your idol, but he didn’t disappoint. Guys a legend.
Man....I hadnt heard that song in decades! Many memories of getting high in the 70s and listening to that song....and such a great cover of it live! Thanks for sharing!
I did that in the 70’s as well, now in 2022, I still do 😁
finaly thought you guys would never get to this awesome tune
david Gilmour/Pink Floyd is not a tune or an album it's an experience
This is the song the original line up of Pink Floyd played to open the first Pink Floyd concert I attended in April 1975. I knew I was going to be in for a ride. I remember David Gilmour playing a lap steel guitar sitting on the edge of the stage with his legs swinging back and forth. He was much younger then too. Gilmour is an icon IMHO.
Everything Pink Floyd is Genius at some level
When you first got the Meddle album and put the tone arm on, this is what came out. It was captivating then and still is now. I was lucky enough to see Pink Floyd live and they did perform this song. No Echos alas.
"Tone arm". I haven't heard that term in decades! You must be an old fogey like me! 😂
The day I heard the _Animals_ album for the first time (circa 1976) was the day I decided that I was going to be a musician. Anyway, that's how long I've been playing the guitar for now. lols
I love this concert. The setting, in the literal shadow of Vesuvius is just perfect for Gimlmour's haunting original pieces, and some of my favourite Floyd renditions ever.
Gilmour did not make this alone. This one was written by Waters, Mason, Wright and Gilmour
@@hermanshire indeed, but the concert also features Gilmour's solo work.
Wow, never heard this version. Must be recent, he's quite older here. Excellent version.
It's from 2016.
It's almost unbelievable how talented David Gilmour is. The guy can do it all.
He is THE MAN!!
Thank you for not going ūber fanboy on David's ability. It is refreshing...
I know, playing Rogers and Nicks songs
A lot of British prog rock guitarists like Steve Howe and Jimmy Page used steel guitars, Howe used it in “And you and I”, Page used it in “That’s the Way”. Gilmour uses it on “Time” and “Great gig in the sky” also.
If it has strings I think the guy can play it...
It was a "Steel Pedal Guitar" popular during early Country music.
I saw them live several times and the most amazing effect can not be heard on the recording. The bass sound moves around the stadium in circles. That allways blew my mind.
That bass guitar is intoxicating I love it😅
In Pink Floyd, the song is actually called "Careful With That Axe, Eugene" from the album Meddle. It's the album right before Dark Side... and is a the damn good album.
Excellent.... as 18-19yo kids in the Navy we would sit around some dive hotel in San Diego and and play this album , Meddle, Ummagumma and believe it or not The Wall had just come out. We were always high of course (weed) but it certainly brings back fond memories....Thanks.
Great song. You should listen to the 'Ummagumma' album bc everything from "Set the controls for the heart of the Sun" to "Careful with that axe, Eugene" are perfect.
Wife here...The steel guitar is amazing!!.
As mentioned in a comment below it is predominant in Country and Western..This song has an amazing vibe!!
"One of these days I'm going to tear you into little pieces!" This live version sounds amazing but isn't as creepy as the original studio version from 1971 album Meddle. Dave is playing a lap steel guitar, which is usually used in country western music.
One Of These Days". One of these days. I'm going to cut you into little pieces.
Cut
I used to think it was saying "One of these days I'm going to dance with the evil priest" 🤣
@@brettkenschaft4239 😂😂😂
All Time Favorite! Meddle. HEADPHONES!
Fun fact.. this is the only Pink Floyd song to include/feature vocals by the drummer, Nick Mason. He is the recorded/distorted voice saying, "One of these days, I'm going to cut you into little pieces".
Actually, you can also hear Nick reading off the flight checklist in Learning to Fly.
@@michaelkelly4613 really? I didn't know about that. Thanks
An amazing track especially for the time is was recorded back in the seventies
I’ve seen them pink twice and Dave three times the first time I was on acid what a fking trip the other shows I was just smoking a lot of weed. They have the best stage shows I ever seen trippy as hell
I wish I got to see this concert live
i lov the rickenbaker bass sounds in it!
The only song that made it from PF at Pompeii to David Gilmour at Pompeii
The version of Run Like Hell from this concert is great.
You found it!.......the song....thee songgg
The Instrument David is sitting with is a Pedal Steel Guitar . An improvement of the Lap Steel Guitar . Which is , in turn , an Improvement of the Resonator Guitar .
Pedal Steel is an Electric Instrument . Not usually played So LOUD . A GLORIOUS Noise .
The best live version of One of the Days is
from Pink Floyd Live in Pompeii 1971.
Gilmour is not afraid to push the envelope of sound.
this is a great song i used to get drunk and listen to this on repeat
Hard to believe just 4 guys were able to play this 50 years ago. How many are on stage now?
The instrument David's playing is a pedal steel guitar, as opposed to a lap steel, it has pedals and knee levers that change the pitches of the strings and has no actual frets, they are painted on, the fret is the steel in Davids left hand that ha is pressing on the strings with
Cosmos used this instrumental as a backdrop to how their visuals of the violence of outer space reality
All guitars write to Santa asking for a Dave Gilmour for Christmas
David Gilmore is proof that you don't have to "shred" to be the best.
This is good but the Pink Floyd version, live at Pompeii, is fantastic.
The first time I heard this song I was really confused at its meaning (I was 9). I don't know how true this is, but my father told me this song was about a monster breaking out of a tomb, and now I look at this song in a whole new way.
It is about cutting up a radio dj's (Jimmy Young) sound because he talked too much.
Please reaction "echoes" ı know a little bit long but ı think it's worth to listen
React to the entire film at Pompeii
Slide Guitar. This was from the album which preceeded Dark Side of the Moon.
He’s playing a lap steel guitar. There are other versions with pedals to change the tones. Those are called pedal steel guitars.
First for me, wow, like it alot.
It’s called a steel guitar, country music uses it a lot
How to listen to Pink Floyd -
1. Get stoned
2. Wear headphones
3. lie down on your back in a comfortable position
4. Go to a different dimension
Steel pedal guitar used a lot in country music
Could it be, you guys check out what other reaction videos are reviewing the song you pick and what version they choose, then you go to a different recording to avoid a copycat tag ? I know a large contingent of Floyd fans eat up live recordings for a myriad of reasons, but in my humble opinion the studio cuts are the definitive evidence of the genius within Pink Floyd.
should have chosen the pulse version! imo the best :>
It is a Lap Steel Slid Guitar..
“One of these days, I’m going to bash you into little pieces”. Wonder who wrote that lyric.
Do the pulse concert versions of their songs. You always choose the wrong versions.
The pulse concert is so often suggested and reacted to but I still prefer their original recordings. It's great that they're old and still playing but it's not as good as their prime time, imo.
You should do the live pulse version it’s much better
Its a Pedal Steel Guitar that has been mainly a country music instrument though out history. Gilmour doesnt play it like that though.
I prefer the Pulse remastered 2019 concert rendition
is that david gilmour or 88 fingers edward?
With some high quality headphones this would be stellar !
1994 PULSE Pink Floyd live performance is much better than this 2016 David Gilmour solo live version. I’m not sure why this was chosen over the other one. The other one had a deserved stand ovation.
lap steel guitar
Best intro song evah
Time it up using the original
Don’t @ me
You guys MUST watch the Live at Pompei version of Echoes, 1972. It's absolutely fantastic. They're all in their mid 20s, David with his long hair and model looks.
Absolutely you guys need listen too this
If you do listen to this just be warned that echos is a full twenty minute song
Rick Wright was fine!!! 😊
That performance all but one recording camera was working, the one directed only at the drums. Made it one of my favourites.
How cool was that! Even an old David Gilmour still has his mojo and can put you in a zone where you forget reality and just disappear into a Floydian audio landscape. You should see a much younger Gilmour with the classic Pink Floyd lineup in the same amphitheater in 1972. Do Echoes, it is in 2 parts as it originally opened and closed the concert documentary movie. Enjoy! I have the past 50 years. 🎵🎸🎤🎹🎶
Yes, Pls.... do that :)
Live at Pompeii.
Every version of this is different in some fashion, it’s good no matter what. Live versions are really something else; the album version seems pretty tame by comparison. My favorite is the version on “Delicate Sound of Thunder.” That’s just me, everyone has their own.
I caught them on this tour in Houston Tx. Wow! They'd just released Momentary lapse of Reason. Best concert ever.
Pink Floyd Live.... You always know something bad ass cool is about to happen. I've seen them live 4 times... Amazing each time.
Me too! 1975, 1978, 1987 & 1994. All equally good in their own way but seeing Dark Side of the Moon and then an encore of Echoes in 75 is hard to beat.
@@vicprovost2561 Nice!
Yup, '87 and '94 for me, will never forget the latter. The former was just a bit of a bummer due to needing to take a group bus to get there, a stadium in Toronto, and be so far back David would strum a chord that ya heard two seconds later, lol. Was also a banner hating on Roger that was paraded around to both boos and cheers.
@@JoinTheProgress I saw the 87 show at Toronto, We had great seats center right 90 feet back..... AWESOME...94 was Syracuse Carrier Dome..... same seating.... GREATEST SHOW EVER
@@AliasMark69 DUDE! ...we were at the same show! For Syracuse, we had tickets that were behind an obstruction...they ended up giving us MUCH better seats, lol, we were just a couple rows up from the floor about 30 yards away. It was probably my all-time favorite concert (and I've been to many), it was just spectacular. I remember everything about that day, I had family in Syracuse at the time so we were able to stop over and get an early dinner then to the show. Had been to a bunch of football games and other concerts so I knew the venue, was a great time. I was in my mid-20's. Cheers!
Imagine being there, where it's so loud you can physically feel it. Completely immersed.
I sparked up my pipe for this reaction, as I do to all Pink Floyd tunes/reactions.... Thanks
🫠💨👍🏼
🥳
Prefer the version by the whole (well not Rodger) band in the ‘Pulse’ concert. This one has Dave Gilmour being a bit self indulgent and losing the essence of the song a bit. Its a slide guitar he is playing.
Pink Floyd is the best concert you could have seen live by far! 😎
Absolutely!! I've seen a bunch of shows and they were hands down the best!
The pedal steel guitar is a console-type of steel guitar with pedals and knee levers that change the pitch of certain strings to enable playing more varied and complex music than any previous steel guitar design. Like all steel guitars, it can play unlimited glissandi (sliding notes) and deep vibrati-characteristics it shares with the human voice. Pedal steel is most commonly associated with American country music and Hawaiian music.
Wikipedia
I love listening to this song At Night when I'm cruising down the toll road Past construction cones.
Pink Floyd is definitely mind bending, mind altering and just a fantastic band.. David on the drums at the beginning then sits down to play the lap steel guitar... They are known for for graphics and laser shows. Best ever
There's a lot of bands and artists that I love and like, but Mr. David Gilmour is at the top of the list!!!
Great... never seen a reaction to this masterpiece before!
There is nothing, I mean nothing like seeing Pink Floyd live...A mind altering experience.
💯!!!!!!
the light show is what gets me. i've seen pink floyd 3 times and the lights are incredible. every inch of the stadium/arena/whatever, is lit with lights and lasers that enable the viewers to "see" the music as it is being played. a full video of this as seen from above the stadium would be fun to watch.
Love this song, it's one of a few that must be listened to on 11, rattle the walls and floor.
Do "Careful with That Axe, Eugene" from Pompeii 1971....that's even better IMO
"Saucerful of Secrets" is even better than that. All four of them are on the top of their game.
Is getting older years after years but is always a pleasure to listen too David Gilmour on stage 🤩
Go back in time to "Echoes pt 1 " Pink Floyd live in Pompeii 1970 in the same coliseum. A must reaction...🔥🔥🔥
The whole of Live at Pompeii is absolutely brilliant. And they were such pups. Mad, brilliant pups.
@@brotherbeagle Agreed ! And the sound is something that you would never get in a studio. The live version to me is unmatchable ! ✌️
David Gilmore is easily in my top five favorite guitarists.
Yep, #2 for me right after Jimi Hendrix. Then the 3 greats from the Yardbirds in whatever order I feel that day. That's my Top 5, but to be truthful, there are at least 20 in my mind I could make a case for to be included, we are simply blessed by a lifetime of amazing music.
You really need to do Pompeii 1972 Echoes Live... when they were in their 20's.
One of my top 10 Pink Floyd songs. David Gilmour - the Mad Scientist - good one Lex.
Roger always thought he was "Pink" but we all knew all along Dave was "Pink"....still is
Roger was good at setting the ground work, Dave just filled it in with amazing guitars. They really needed each other.
@@lightsideofthemoon13 Roger really didn't take over the song writing until "Animals" and "The Wall", except for "Dogs" and "Comfortably Numb" arguably the best songs on both albums...cowritten with Gilmour.
@@pulsarlights2825 I used to think Roger was a god when its came to writing music. I never gave Dave the credit he deserved with the emotions he brought to a lot of the songs with this guitar playing and writing. Still the best duo besides maybe the Beatles.
@@lightsideofthemoon13 Not to get into the Beatles debate, but I think the facts came out in recent years that the Beatles were not really a song writing duo. John wrote his songs and Paul wrote his, McCartney said he should have just kept his own songs instead of crediting them to "Lennon/McCartney"....have you heard that?
@@pulsarlights2825 you know it's funny I was thinking that as I wrote the last comment. I'd say Supertramp but Roger wrote the songs he sang and Rick wrote the songs he sang. It's funny both Rogers had huge egos. They both claimed the music was for the fans but internally they wanted credit. Not sure if your like Supertramp, but that's my opinion.
My fav version of this is from the Delicate Sound of Thunder live tour.
Great song. The entire title is: One of these days (I'm going to cut you into little pieces). When he speaks. \m/
I can't help but imagine what wonderful offerings of music we'd have all these 3 or so decades past if Roger Waters mastery of storytelling and David Gilmours mastery of music never parted.
last summer I was in that Stadium in Pompeji... and they still have the concert posters from Pink Floyd on the wall
You guys need to review Echoes Live Pompeii, 1971. It’s a masterpiece.
I love this classic Floyd song. I got to hear it at a Roger Water’s concert, no Gilmore but still a great song. I saw an interview a few years back that the band was a little disappointed when they first heard the songs’s final mix. Apparently they had played so many tracks and they had extended them so much, but then the editor cut it back. Always kind of wished to have heard those extended tracks.
Agreed. Great song!
its typical for country...a flat pedal steel guitar, you can modulate the sounds with foot pedals
Oh man .... David gilmour live in Pompeii 2016 is my favorite stuff of all time... Especially the song high hopes. That song is absolutely amazing
Superb David Gilmour as usuel 🤩🤩🤩
Floyd's live shows are legendary. Good grab.
David Gilmour is playing a pedal steel guitar.
Hands down the most psychedelic band
Makes all your senses come alive!
I like the pulse live version a bit better. It's longer and more steel time. This was great though.
Great reaction!
I believe it is a song from the artist to the song. The Artist is telling a song "One day I am going to cut you into little pieces."
It's a pedal steel.
It's a steel guitar. Sometimes called a slide guitar. You can also get a similar sound by using a small piece of pipe on your finger. Jimmy page was famous for his slide guitar sound. Ck out in my time of dying, he killed it.
It's called a slide guitar. Just too bad you guys couldn't see a live Pink Floyd show from back in the days; I tell you, you would remeber it for the rest of your life! Try to find out the PULSE Tour show in HD
You guys always pick the concert versions, which are ALWAYS inferior to the studio versions.
