    I started playing bass as a 48 year old a few months ago. I had never picked up a bass before but I'd watched a few of Josh's videos and signed up to his Beginner to Badass (B2B) course right away. This course is brilliant and you learn so much at a beginner level, playing your bass the whole way through. No boring scale drills, no music theory being thrown at you in huge overwhelming chunks that you have to memorise-- it's laid back, fun, and Josh's approach makes the lessons both enjoyable and informative. For the cost of the lifetime-access B2B course, I would get about six in-person lessons with a teacher and I would not cover anywhere near the amount of detail that Josh gives you in B2B. In fact, I went to a teacher after I finished the B2B course (I did the one month plan, but you can move at your own pace), and the teacher was surprised at how much I knew after only 30 days doing a course. I am a very happy customer and I highly recommend B2B to anyone. I have finally found 'my' instrument after a lifetime of feeling like a complete failure at anything musical, but Josh gave me a great foundation to build on.

I bought direct from Fender, a 1960 American Vintage 11 Series, 3- color Sunburst P- Bass. I've Subscribed to your Channel, and play along to all your Videos. Keep posting because I'm definitely learning. I'm from Boston Massachusetts, and retired from the Federal Government , so I have the rest of my life to become a good Bass player. Thanks!

    I started playing bass in February 2021. Within the first few months I found Bass Buzz on YT and decided to go through the Beginner To Badass Course. It was absolutely invaluable! It gave me such a solid foundation for playing and understanding music, and was so much fun. As proud of myself as I was when I completed the course, I was also sad that it was over. I miss having you as a teacher! But I'm still loving my bass and doing very well :) I know I wouldn't be where I am without you, Josh. Josh, I really appreciated your answer to my question, whether you would Bass Battle Flea. Even though it was a light humored question, the answer was actually pretty significant, especially for beginners to hear, if you think about it. All too often we see people getting wooed and wowed with how good someone is and comparing talent. I agree that music isn't about competition, and maybe the only person to compete and battle against is oneself in the pursuit of becoming the best one can.

    • @thefear420
      @thefear420 Рік тому +4

      I loved his answer too but I also think most bass UA-camrs do a battle mostly for collaboration purposes and to introduce people to other channels. If Davie504 didn't make a battle video versus Charles Berthoud me and many others might've not found his channel.

    Thank you Josh for all the great content and massive work in general! I follow the BassBuzz channel almost from the beginning and your videos are so educational in a very unformal way and really suit my slow learning "skills". The humor, the jokes and the easy going way of presenting the information is what keeps me following you and I speak probably from the majority of the people here. In short - just keep on rockin', because you make so many bassists around the world happy.

    That Geezer Butler style solo you played during at 57:30 point of the video is excellent. Definitely captured essence of Geezer's approach. Tons of chromatic runs mixed in with the blues and natural minor scale (well to my ears that's what I'm hearing).

    Hey Josh! Love the course so far, and I'm almost done with it! My favorite aspect of the course, and I'm not too sure what the case might be, but there have been several weekends where I've gone without doing the lessons because life is busy, but I can always come back and not feel like I do when I go weeks or months without drawing; when I abandon drawing I come back and have to refresh myself (figure drawing looks awful if I don't constantly work on it) but I don't get that kind of experience with the lessons. Anyways, I think I'm okay at coming up with melodies on my own (like in my head I'd hear a piano-ish type of melody and later try to recreate the ryhthms and notes, usually with great success) and playing along with drum loops, but I feel like I could be doing more with a similar course to B2B. More often than not I'm still jumping on my Songster app to learn a song I liked- mostly because of a lack of time to really learn the notes/rhythms by ear, but I'm not hopelessly reliant on tabs. Most of my joy comes from doing covers of my own beats and meddling with my multi effects processor 😅 if there's any artist I for sure feel strongly inspired by it's Muzz Skillings formerly of Living Colour. No matter how insanely fast or incoherent the grooves of their songs get, he's always laying it down with a killer tone! For reference, title track for "Time's Up" it's nuts!

    Hey there Josh. I'm a little late to the party on this one but I'm stoked you're adding live streams to your channel. If you're still watching this comment thread for questions I'd like your thoughts on how much time I should be forcing myself to set aside each week to practice in order to progress in a way that makes me feel like I'm getting something out of the experience. I got my first bass a couple years ago and then I finally purchased your B2B course many months ago. But I'm only on module 4 or something like that because I'll go weeks, sometimes months without practicing. I have a full time office job, 2 small kids who are very active and a wife who never has a shortage of things to add to my honey do list. So my practice sessions become these impromptu, unscheduled binges that are spaced very far apart. If I were to sit down and schedule a more disciplined practice routine, how many times per week and how long per session should I be targeting? I love the bass as an instrument and when I do play I have a lot of fun with it. I'd like to get good enough to seek out other musicians that I can jam with. Thanks for what you do. Your channel / videos are a large reason why I haven't completely abandoned my bass yet. Peace.

    My first axe was old 60s bass, that was a compleate wreck, and had flatound strings... well at some point those strings were normal strings that became flatwound from playing. At some point I was convinced that they were bronze strings, but turned out they were just rusty. Few years later I bought an old p-base that I used a lot. Later gathered some money and went on generic Silvertone bass, that I still own. It is about 15 years old, already. Past 2 years I went crazy and bought TRBX504, Solar 2.4BOP and Dingwall Combustion 5 strings... Well with my skills the 15 year old one works like a charm, but damn they look gorgeous on the wall, don't they?

    And thank you for playing a Squire during your tutorials and videos... nothing is more intimidating that instructors playing basses that we plebs cannot afford - it makes us wonder if that's why we sound crap. You show the possibilities of affordable instruments.

    I'm a bassist that primarily uses a PICK (the dreaded plectrum) who spent a year playing almost nothing but fingers but went back to the pick several months ago. For the facts 90 percent of one's favorite bass players use a pick and I prefer the sound. Also yes, much like you I've been a huge MATT FREEMAN FAN all the way back to 1994 when I was 13. A year later I bought And Out Come The Wolves on cassette at the local Blockbuster Music in Lancaster CA (yeah I know I'm really dating myself) . My question being I adjusted my finger style and angles of playing over that year so it wouldn't cause arthritic pain anymore, whilst utilizing the 2 finger technique. Is there any form of warm up or even songs you'd recommend working on to get more comfortable with the fingers? I watched your video on stretching and that helped but I still get pain using the fingers after about an hour. For some reason I can play very accurately and clean with a plectrum but with the fingers not even close. It may have to do with fact I use to play guitar over 14 years ago, who knows?! I appreciate your channel and videos regardless of whether or not you get to my question. You've definitely helped motivate me over the last 2 years and 2 months of playing bass. Looking forward to more of your content.

    Rickenbacker in my opinion is very limited and flat. Myself have a BC Rich Eagle. It has a brite sound, I have changed the bridge (badass) lowered the action and changed the pickups. Now it is super brite with a fast action...I would love a Warwick.

    Hey Josh, just wondering what set of headphones would be best for practicing bass guitar. I'm thinking of picking up bass guitar, and buying your course. I am looking at the different options for headphones. I'm thinking of buying the Sennheiser Professional HD 280 PRO. $129.99 Canadian. Seems like a really good set with a decent price point. What are your thoughts on those ones, and what other ones would you recommend?

    Late to the party and I wasn't able to watch this live because it was in the middle of the night for me. I just wanted to say it was a lot of fun and I've learned so much about Josh's banana! ... Okay, jokes aside. I'm a bloody rookie who just got a bass not too long ago and I appreciate your channel a ton. It's a great help in terms of avoiding pitfalls and I'm gonna check out your course once I've found a way to throw money across the pond \o/

    To the person who asked about getting a Rickenbacker 4003 - do it! I have a Fender (USA) Geddy Lee signature Jazz Bass and the Ric - love them both. Both equally easy to play (for me)…With these two, I have a LOT of versatility in the sounds I can get from them. Both are smooth/fast to play…(again, in my experience…but others that are instructors have played them and enjoyed both.)
    Josh - According to the company, it’s pronounced “rick-in-back-er” so as to distance themselves from their German origins during/post-WWII. The “correct” way to pronounce it in German is “rick-in-bock-er.” So technically, either is correct…I guess one might defer to the company’s wishes on how it’s pronounced though.
