It is amazing today, that Willie Nelson at age 90 is out touring, and he participated in this amazing event some 38 years ago. On the morning of April 5, 1985 (Good Friday of that year) at 3:50 pm GMT, over 8,000 radio stations simultaneously broadcast the song around the world. This is the greatest day of the 1980's as far as I am concerned.. We have been going down the outhouse shaft ever since. I was in junior high when this was first released. It’s more emotional now, isn’t it? This time has passed and will never return. Imagine if the “artists” today tried something like this. They’d need auto-tune and computer generated music, and it’d still all sound the same. As I was watching some millennials react to this, one thing they noticed was just how different everyone sounded to one another, and how that is lost in today’s music.

My mother had both the single and album record when it came out around spring 1985 when I was in Preschool. My favorite part of the song then and now, is the mini-duet with Stevie Wonder and Bruce Springsteen. It's one of those collaborations that you probably would never get on a full song, but it was so interesting to see it here, and it kind of works.

Once again Angela great choice of songs to review. In my opinion this is the greatest collection of artist coming together for such a great cause and like you said the message resonates today, especially in our own back yard. If everyone would take this song to heart it would help to bring our country back together instead of all the division nowadays. Continue doing a great job Angela, love your stuff. 😍

I appreciate and agree with this good-natured mentality. Sadly, the issues in the U.S. that have fully surfaced since the start of the pandemic existed in 1985, the year “We Are The World” was released. The diff is that 38 yrs ago the U.S. was still putting on the facade that it was the greatest country in the world. In 2023 with all the social reckoning that has occurred during the lockdown, the words of the late Maya Angelou from a 1997 Oprah interview resonate more than ever:
“When people show you who they are, believe them.” 💯

This song was extremely fitting at a very hard moment in time for the hungry. It literally captured you when those synthesized horns came on, followed by Lionel’s voice.
This is when we humans were devoted to helping and sharing.
