you know what would be cool? doing something like this for a fantasy console like Pico-8
If you JUST wanted to do something for the Pico-8 you could prob just use a rpi of some sort with a cart port.
@@JessicaFEREMYeah, that's effectively what he just suggested. Pico-8 is just an emulation spec, sure some "dedicated" hardware exists, but that's not how you're intended to "use" Pico-8.
Pico-8 suxx dixx. -FOSS Gang
I was just thinking this, like the reverse of FPGA emulators
@@gamagama69Honestly an arm-based (or really using any 8/16-bit microcontroller) Pico-8 "game player" system that doesn't run a full OS would be pretty cool. --- That would still be sort of halfway there, because Pico-8 is a /fantasy console/ so any software implementation thereof is essentially a sort of 'virtual machine' (VM) that interprets an instruction set.
We got Pico-8 content in the hopper, don't you worry.
now make a cartridge for super auto pets for the gameboy
Yes!
bruh.mp3
It's like a glorious cross between a PC Engine and an Amstrad GX.
And a TurboGrafx 16 technically
@@Bush_Dog777so… pc engine.
@@LambdaMiscellaneous yes I know, but the American version
@@Bush_Dog777 But it's... the same thing.
@@LambdaMiscellaneous almost, the TG-16 is more like a rectangle, as the PC Engine is more squared, and the TG-16 has some stuff different from the PC Engine, I just can't remember it
Abe: How many stock footage should i use for the video?
Abe: Yes!
:) it started as a meme, but now it's an addiction :(
@@abetodayat least it’s not a soundboard addiction
I got this video recommended, and I was not expecting it to be as high quality as it was. Can't wait to see what else you cook up! And keep up the good work 👊
Thank you!! Really appreciate the kind words!
Same! Keep it up!
To give you some product designer insight to make it feel more like a retail item, think about the end user and marketing. Little things like the sticker on the game should be flipped so it’s properly viewed when inserted. This would have been something that would have been done so product photos showed off a game as well.
This comment gave me the idea to design a box for it
@@sequbutfrenchdid you do it
For the Plastic for the Console and Cartridges I recommend Resin Casting. It will give you a plastic feel closer to what you want. Robert Tolone, Brick in the Yard, and Crafsman Steady Craftin for tutorials. Also Plastic Geek is great person to ask for advice.
Craftsman is amazing
Man I’m just so impressed by the production quality and generally content, that’s crazy for such a recent channel. Keep going this is really top quality content ❤️
Thank you my friend! I try to put a lot of effort into my videos so comments like your keep me motivated!
@@abetoday you sound a lot like code bullet i get the same kind of vibes from your videos definetly got a new sub here if you ever plan to make and sell these am buying one
For real and for the ports on the front I would split them into 4, make 1 an IR Sensor, leave 2 as usb for mouse and keyboard and make one port have an optional adapter for old games that's modular
Ikr, if he directs, films and edits them himself that's freaking amazing. It kinda inspires me to give youtube one more shot, I've made a few channels in the past but eventually given up as the amount of effort put in to directing, filming and editing was too much for me and no family member was able to help me even if they wanted to. But I'm going to give it another shot I think.
I like how you brought back the TurboGrfx / PCEngine design vibe, I had one of those and it was amazing.
lovely project! i really like how cute the cartridges look and how they autorun when inserted, makes it really polished
Amazing build! Can’t wait to try it. I reckon the two ports on the front could be great for peripherals - a VCR style player for movies, a slide projector for photos etc. Looking forward to seeing what you do next!
I designed my own game console also. Tha was a 2 yr long journey and i loved doing it. Spent a lot but learned and enjoyed a LOT. So cool to see someone else doing the same. Mine was a portable 3D printed arcade, but i am in love with your console. Congrats for the results and thanks for sharing this video !
i made one out of a cereal box when I was 8, it used pokemon cards for the cateidges and the game was in my imagination c:
Man this editing is amazing
I like this editing not all the stock videos but some of them parts your videos and the little design plans
What if, you added something like the gamecube did, modular devices for what you wish to do at that current time, say want to watch a movie? You just insert the IR module
Play normal games? module for keyboard and mouse
Play retro? Make a module!
It seems like itll work
This is cool and inspiring. I love the way it looks. My one qualm is the exposed pins on the cartridge. I'm making a retro game and would love to make a cartridge for your custom console!
please let this banger of a video go viral so the sexy sexy Abe can do this shit full-time and just bless us with these awesome videos!
I couldn’t ignore the video on my home feed, doing a triple take, and I’m glad I watched. I definitely wasn’t expecting this to be the third video posted
This video actually hits home with me in a way not many videos do. When I was a teenager around 2001, a friend and I spent some time to create a game console that used floppy disks as its storage medium. At it's heart of course, it was torn down laptop motherboard trimmed and repurposed into a somewhat generic looking beige chassis and a custom OS written in C and some assembler that allowed for some low level graphics calls and stuff. It was affectionately dubbed the Fdrive. We wanted to make actual cartridges for it but we were definitely butting heads against the limitations of the time as teenagers in a world where parts were not so readily accessible.
At first, I thought this video was pure clickbait, but you using Framework Laptop 13 parts reminded me: I had dreamt of making something similar, but rather than make a late '80s console, I wanted to make a mid '90s laptop.
I've been thinking about doing something like this for a while. Glad to see someone jumped on it already
Thank you so much! The cart design is exactly what I've been wanting to design for the longest time. You nailed it!
Subscribed for the electronics. Stayed for the editing.
this is amazing. you should make the cartridge labels flipped so they are seen the right way up when plugged in
This was art
This has all the vibes of an SNES dev console
The case design looks very inspired by the PC Engine / TurboGrafx-16, maybe with a bit of a Sega Mark III in the mix.
This reminds me of the old atari consoles, especially the lynx with those unusual cartridges, what a cool idea!
Dude, this is incredible! I want one like this, but for Steam games. The homemade cartridges are chef's kiss.
Thanks for the kind words! I’m sure you could build your own if you set your mind to it
@@abetoday Is it possible to use PS2 memory cards as game cartridges? I'd like to see someone attempt that. Your video shows that creating carts can be done.
this video and the build are exquisite
The more I see kickass Framework projects, make me think they should make a modular Console.
very cool project, tho i must admit that the framework board used is massively overkill and would hardly be seen as "obsolete hardware"
it’s sponsored content
true, but its really cool to see that these components can have a useful second life unlike most things manufactured these days
You could also use it as a pc though.
That looks cool. I went the 3.5" floppy route on one of my consoles but your cartridge idea is so clever.
i think the simplest and most obvious thing to add would be a couple usb ports, which doesnt entirely fit the retro vibe but it does open a lot of possibilities for other controllers, since theres usb adapters and remakes for basically every controller and controller adjacent device you can think of
The LED ground control was amazing.
this is just the phineas and ferb episode with max motem
"were not trying to make you a celebrity were trying to make you a has-been"
Nintendo's gonna love having you working with them
this has better production and editing than channels with millions of subs keep it going man
Thank you so much! I’ll try!
I like the way this video was made. The goofiness is a plus. You earned a sub
love the channel, cant wait for you to blow up!! Road to 100K!
thank you friend!
If the frame was reworked a little, the ports on the front could be reworked that lead to a new controller input. USB is cool, but that feeling of weird controller inputs was really mysterious and nostalgic for me. The S-Video input looking ones especially got to me, because it looked so complicated.
Could just use a standard 9 pin connector like Atari, Sega, and most 80s PCs to keep it semi standard
1:01 this tiny clip inspired me to get a treehouse. thank you.
Looks wicked, and that noise as the cartridge slots in 👌🏼
it's so beautiful! I've looked at this for five hours now.
This man is the king of using stock footage in context. It’s great
00:10 They were simple and comfortable to the touch.
Today, everything is so complicated and out of touch with what we need... What we truly want.
I completely agree with this sentiment.
It's criminal that a build this cool isn't more than a ten minute video.
Yo this channel is a sleeper, predicting subs to spike up soon, great stuff.
Instantly Subscribed, I just discovered your channel while browsing videos for the 32blit and Pimoroni Pico System.
You made this look so much easier than I know it was
production quality is crazy good keep it up
I can't believe you put Steamworld Heist on your console! It's my favorite game!
I’m gonna be real, this look like a turbografx-16. Cool video still!
honestly the best part is the cartridge and the mechanisim to read them
for ages i wished for an storage like this, i imagine saving my art and projects on a cartridge like this and could put it onto other devices through that cartridge
This is absolutely beautiful, I have had a vision for creating a physical copy of my own fantasy console and this really scratches my itch! Glad to see someone had the same idea. Curious if you will be making some unique controllers to go along with it?
Can we get a part 2 on this going into more detail?
Getting people to watch two videos on one subject is challenging so making part 2 stand-alone might be necessary (if a bit difficult) but I sure would appreciate it
I'm probably going to do a full video just about cartridges (I've improved the drive significantly since releasing this) and go into detail about the software and everything for that. This whole build probably wont see more videos, but you never know!
thanks random youtube guy, would love to see more creations from you!
I really love this project. I think making it look like a floppy disc drive and the games going on actual floopy discs
USB in the front so it can support any USB controller, or USB-converted controller.
Just recently I bought some NES and SNES controllers that work by USB, so my Emulation feeling is all the more authentic.
Great project! The console really needs a shiny logo sticker on it like the C64 rainbow or ZX spectrum
Congrats, you must be very dedicated, seems like a lot of work.
Man it was my first time checking out a video on your channel that I discovered from yt shorts, and although I'm not much into retro consoles built but the production quality and your content was soo awesome to just not appreciate your channel.... Keep up such great vibes and you will be one of the top creators one day
Thank you so much!!! It means a lot to hear that!
Amazing I remember those USB adapters. Anyways congrats you single handled defeated intellavision amico hahaha
Awesome video! This channel has great potential to blow up. Keep up the great work!
What would be cool is if you made a more complex menu interface (similar to the ps3 xmb) with customizable settings and stuff
its possible with Retroarch.. it would probably take a bit of an effort to make it run a game as soon as the card's plugged in tho. not impossible, but certainly doable
Turbografx Vibes
Really putting "PC" into "PC Engine" here. Nice work!
ive been wanting to dot his for years but never had the money, so seeing something someone else do this is really cool (:
2:28 I love how “Girl” is a “Material”
I'm a little envious. Ever since getting fed up with collecting, I've sort of dreamed about having a custom console that I could curate a 16-bit library for. Of course buying dozens or hundreds of SD cards and making homemade cartridges would still get prohibitively expensive, but still I dream.
This is amazing content, superb work! Can't wait to see your channel continue to grow!
Thank you so much!!!
You should make a custom controller for it and make it connect trough those ports
Nicely done!
IMO: There have been no games consoles in years - something you shove the media in to, turn on, and play... If a PC-like boot time, recurrent system updates, endless updates for software released in a broken state, the cursed DLC, a requirement to be on-line, no proper single-player or local multi-player... then it's NOT a games console! The last 'console' I owned was a PS3 - boot... online registration, 20 mins of systems updates, fired up Gran Turismo... 35 mins of updates. Turned off, never touched again.
That normal girl is using a normal computer that isn’t plugged in. 😂
Love that your channel showed up in my feed!
Thanks for watching!!
Looks so retro! I love it! You should put adapters in the ports
Its not every day that I witness the beginning of a legendary channel.
It reminds me of the PC Engine Console
The production quality is amazing on this video, and the final project is awesome!
I can't believe you designed that entire thing with Tinkercad, it really shows that the tool doesn't matter.
Thank you!!! Glad you enjoyed!
Man, youtube reccomendations are getting better and better. Amazing content bro
for the polishing step of the 3d printed material, you should have tested out an acetone vapor bath to actually melt the plastic and give it a shiny uniform finish, THEN hit it with the sandpaper and textured paints.
Would be dope if you designed your own controller aswell!! And use the ports for it c:
This is great! Love me some cool little hardware projects :)
Wow! Just found this channel, this was Amazing! ❤
When I was a kid all I wanted was a SNES with multi-TV outs, so my friends and I could play Super Mario Kart together on different TVs. Considering how powrful low-cost options are now, I'm surprised we don't see something like this today in the form of a 16-bit fantasy console.
I love the airplane bit so much
Omg dude. This is Netflix-level content. YOU NEED MORE SUBSCRIBERS. I’m only 1 min in and I already subscribed. This is a perfect combo between normal media and newer media. This is awesome!
This would pair so nicely with 8bitdos keyboard
I would love to follow a build or tutorial of this to learn. I absolutely love this.
Something like this would be really cool for a 3D Printer
Putting your sliced model onto the cartridge with usb-c
And then clunking a big cartridge into your printer to print off
It would feel like using scifi tech out of a 90s anime
every single board computer enthusiest ever. freal thoughyou went the distance for this prototype
Just had the national alarm go off while i was watching this video
I had the same alarm go off.
This is real old, but I’ve seen that wood filler works good to fill in those print lines before final sanding and painting. I’m still waiting on my 3d printer for a few weeks, but I definitely want to do a similar project to this!
You should design matching controllers! I’m surprised you didn’t do that in this video actually.
Absolutely brilliant.
Use the front ports with classic controller adapters.
I think using those ports for 8bitdo wireless receivers could be nice. They make wireless versions of classic controllers. Those adapters may also work for their regular top of the line controllers (such as the Pro 2 or Ultimate). Great video.
for the front ports u can put a usb-a and usb-c for multi connectivity, like hooking up your phone or a remorte etc.
heres a lesson for every one just because something is old doesnt mean its bad
i love those cartridge designs and how you used a sublimation polaroid printer, i make printed nfts and biught nes/n64 cartridges recentky and wanna make one actually run
we need more of this content
those two holes at the front look to be the exact right size for usb A ports.
