I was fortunate enough to attend high school with Joel and we became friends over those years. This is a sublime performance and I find myself backing up to the 0:28 mark to hear that descending passage again and again.
@steve1605 Yes he did!!! BWV 1006 Sonata for solo Violin Prelude became this Sinfonia from cantata 29. Bach did this a few times arranging his solo Violin and Cello works for keyboards and lute. Another example of this would be BWV 1003 Sonata for solo Violin became BWV 964 Sonata for Clavier.
WOW!! I heard this piece on August Rush.......one of my favorite movies! I fell in love with this piece back then after hearing just with the melody, and now that I know it was one of Bach's creations........well, it's true love FOREVER!! AMAZING....your fingers fly across the keys to effortlessly, and yet so mucially.....BRAVO!
A perfect work. A splendid use of the piano possibilities, in an excellent integration of the baroque language of Bach with the romantic style of Saint Saens. And a very impressive execution of Hastings. What a pleasure!
After having listened to many interpretations (orchestral, organ, guitar and more…) I was absolutely amazed that this wonderful Bach composition could be performed with such perfection and wonderful transcription (for and) on the piano. Thank you to Bach for the composition, Saint-Saens for the transcription and Joel Hastings for a world class performance.
Stunning! After learning this myself for the organ I can appreciate both the sensitivity and the technical element involved with this piano transcription ( a lot of playing in octaves).
Lovely to hear. What's interesting is to compare this with Rachmaninovs transcription of the simfonia of BWV 1006, the violin partita in E. Because that's the simfonia on which Bach based the simfonia for BWV 29, as you may or may not know ;)
@riceboii101 I am aware of that, but Cantata 29 wasn't written for organ solo; instrumentation is three trumpets, two oboes, violins, violas, organ and basso continuo. You can download the score at imslp.org and see for yourself.
It also exists in piano solo form under the title "Preambule to the 6th Violin Sonata in E Major". The arrangement is somewhat different from the sinfonia version and is somewhat challenging. It is not what Joel Hastings in performing here.
Just listened/watched 6 times in a row. Pray for me, I can't stop. Where can I buy the CD? The Baroque rhythm is very nearly perfect, and the piano lends itself to a dynamic expression not available on the organ, though I find the organ transcriptions compelling as well. Much depends on the organ performer's adaptation to the qualities of the instrument and of the auditorium. I too wish I could meet Bach, but I guess meeting God would be better because maybe God could explain Bach.
There's also a later and lighter transcription by the Russian pianist Aleksandr Siloti which is worth comparing: ua-cam.com/video/XTJbs1FOwDE/v-deo.html Considering that the original version of this piece is for solo violin, I suppose the weight you choose is optional. But my favourite transcription of Bach's orchestral version is the multitracked recorder performance by James Howard Young: ua-cam.com/video/tIXBUp55SUc/v-deo.html
Porqué dice Bach/Saint Saens ?? Que alguien me explique por favor. Hasta donde yo se, esta pieza es solo de Bach y es una de mis favoritas, junto con los conciertos de Brandemburgo y otras más. Gracias.
Outstanding performance of an excellent arrangement. IMHO this arr is much superior to the Kempff which everyone raves about or any others I have found (I have not seen the Rachmaninoff). A public domain copy (free!) can be found at musopen dot org (for some reason listed as BWV 28)
Wow very pollished and played much the way it was written. I do disagree with Jeremy D. though Paul Jacobs rendition on the Hazel Wright Organ was about as good as you will ever hear for organ.
Perfect rhythm. Bravo! Some of the organ guys (Paul Jacobs) add these dramatic pauses that ruins it. Bach would be turning in his grave if he heard those.

bravo meastro! You have given life to this exciting composition! OMG...you left us much too soon! RIP!
What incredible Music.
That's exactly why Chopin and Mozart
admired Bach so much.
Remarkable. What a pleasure to listen to.
Wonderful!!!!!!
very enjoyable..used to hearing it on Organ..well performed and phrased..
I never heard this on piano before. Well done!
This great pianist passed away in 2016, aged 46. May he rest in peace.
Roberto Mendoza why did he die. What caused his death?
@@m-hayek1985
I believe he died unexpectedly from a sudden heart attack.
I'm sorry to have just found this video..
RIP
So sorry to hear about Joel's death, I've been enjoying his version of this song for a long time
Great!
Joel
You know how to turn people on
because of your CHOICE of music.
like this etherial Bach piece.

Pure music falling right out of your hands...
Yeah. That works. Good stuff. Great stuff! I'll just drop this right in my Bach playlist. Thanks!
What a fantastic find!!
I love the energy of this piece. And Mr. Hastings plays it with a wonderful spirit.
Thoroughly enjoyable. Thanks very much.
Masterful playing.
Very exciting...truly inspiring!
Dang!!! I never thought it would be possible to play this piece on the piano. :) you learn something new everyday. 10 stars!!!
WOW!! I heard this piece on August Rush.......one of my favorite movies! Absolutely wonderful. A favourite of mine to play on the organ and sounds wonderful on the piano too. Bravo sir!
A perfect work. A splendid use of the piano possibilities, in an excellent integration of the baroque language of Bach with the romantic style of Saint Saens. And a very impressive execution of Hastings. What a pleasure!
Amazing performance!

Magnifica esecuzione di un magnifico brano del magnifico BACH. Grandioso e mozzafiato. Bravissimo
Inspiring and a great performance!
amazing as hell!!!!! Me want more bach!
splendid performance! ! so nice to hear it on the piano. I had only heard it on organ and orchestra.Thank you .
I wouldn't, until now, believed this work could be realized on the piano. Absolutely amazing!!!
Rachmaninoff transcribed it also. Technically more difficult .I prefer this version
An absolutely amazing performance!!
An outstanding, invigorating performance. The utter lack of tension while playing such a demanding piece is an inspiration.
@steve1605 Thank you for this information i never delved into the Sinfonias as deep as yourself!!!
I came to this after hearing his sublime performance of the Grieg Holberg. What gorgeous tone and infectious rhythm. This is a master pianist.
I too heard this after the marvelous and delicious performance of the Holberg. Simply breathtaking beauty personified!
May he RIP forever more.
Bravo! So virtuosic and so expressive! Bach would have loved this on piano.
Very smooth - kudos!
Even as a Bach purist, I enjoyed that arrangement and performance. Thanks to the up-loader.
I think the best word for this is "magnificent" ...... A magnificent rendition of magnificent music. Bravo!
Amazing,great playing
FANTASTIC!!!
Very well done! I'm working on this piece currently, having a blast!
Stunning! After learning this myself for the organ I can appreciate both the sensitivity and the technical element involved with this piano transcription ( a lot of playing in octaves).
beautiful
Absolutely fabulous!

Bravissimo!!
Awesome! I've never heard this on the piano before, never knew there was a transcription. Leave it to Saint Saens I guess! Very cool.
Amazing,Perfect performance! You are really talented pianist!
Greetings from Hungary!
Wowwwwww.....spectacoular!!! 💪💪💪💪💪

Parabens!
expertly performed.... so enjoyable. BRIAN

@SlyFox616 Bach himself arranged it for Organ.
Attempting to learn the Saint-Saens transcription of this for piano myself...see you in five years or so.
I love this! Though, I thought this was the prelude to one of Bach's violin partitas?
Thoroughly enjoyed. Where can I order the music? I gotta learn this.
@bassoonabooma I see! Thanks.
@riceboii101 I am aware of that, but Cantata 29 wasn't written for organ solo; instrumentation is three trumpets, two oboes, violins, violas, organ and basso continuo. You can download the score at imslp.org and see for yourself.
unbelievable
wooooow thats Amazing ! :D
Nicely arranged and beautifully played. Where does one find a piano arrangement of this piece. I'd like to give it a shot!
I wish i could meet bach.
Rach also wrote a transcription for piano.
Joel you play exactly like the late Julian Rhodes, whose version of this on organ I have put on UA-cam. You even look like him in this video.
It also exists in piano solo form under the title "Preambule to the 6th Violin Sonata in E Major". The arrangement is somewhat different from the sinfonia version and is somewhat challenging. It is not what Joel Hastings in performing here.

does anyone have the sheet music for this
Just perfect...only comparable with Bruno Gelberg's rendition
There's also a later and lighter transcription by the Russian pianist Aleksandr Siloti which is worth comparing:

Hasta donde yo se, esta pieza es solo de Bach y es una de mis favoritas, junto con los conciertos de Brandemburgo y otras más.
Gracias.
The piano arrangement played by Hastings was transcribed by Saint Saens.
🎹 👌🏼

@il0velmo95 "original this is means for organ"? No. That's not the case.
@SlyFox616 this exists in 3 formats
Cantata 29 - Wir danken dir, Herr Gott
Lute partita in e minor
Violin partita in e minor as well
You mean E Major.
the sinfonia is in D, the suite/partita is in e minor, but the movement is in E major
Wow very pollished and played much the way it was written. I do disagree with Jeremy D. though Paul Jacobs rendition on the Hazel Wright Organ was about as good as you will ever hear for organ.

Most other pianists are slower.
too muddy for words
