I heard years ago about a project in the Netherlands: when you went to the doctor there was another person, trained in mental health, you saw together with the doctor as so many people benefit from this kind of support being available for dealing with diagnosis and management of all sorts of conditions. It makes sense to me as accepting to have to make life changes often is necessary for dealing with a health issue, and change is a very hard thing for most people to embrace. In case of a serious illness, there is an immediate line of support for the person who finds themselves in the situation of being a patient, maybe requiring surgery or drastic lifestyle changes.
I’ve lived with and dealt with depression for years. So much of it comes from not feeling “good enough” to please others. But, with treatment and age/wisdom, it’s possible to live contented and even happy! 😊

And you may think you're not being there for your children but that's definitely not true! You're sending a powerful message to them that you care about them enough to focus on getting better, and that if they struggle one day THIS is what they need to do. Seeing their role model seeking treatment will send a powerful message that that's exactly what they can do too! They should be proud of you, because I don't even know you and this stranger is proud of and inspired by you for that! And you're sending a powerful message to so many people, especially men. Now, focus on yourself and everything you need, live that message, because you matter! And thank you for reminding us that we all can and should seek help, professional help, help from loved ones and our community, because that is true strength and wisdom and selflessness is learning to be humble enough to accept help when we need it, for our sake and that of everyone we love and everyone who loves us.

John has experienced major life stressors. I understand. I am glad John has reached out for help. He has amazing love and support from his family and friends.
I've been in Healthcare for 30+ years now... The insult of stroke, cardiac diagnoses, surgery, etc to one's psyche is given very little space in the treatment plan. The insult to your body, your mind- everything you thought about who you are, or were- changed in an instant... So much pressure on this man and his family to win an election and grapple with the impact. Mental Health is not covered well and I appreciate Senator Fetterman and his family sharing their journey, as he says, their journey is a common one. So glad to see Senator Fetterman in this interview. He deserves enormous resoect for admitting publicly to his struggle with clinical depression. I wish him a life of balance and harmony despite the demands of political survival in the D.C. shark tank. Self-care begins with paying attention to what your body is telling you. If you need time to think or rest or walk outside, or meditate or do some deep breathing, YOU ARE ENTITLED TO DO SO. EVERYONE IS ENTITLED TO THAT and no one has the right to criticise you for it! There would be a lot less violence in the world if everyone acknowledged that essential Human Right: to what your body and mind are telling you need to do to maintain your physical and psychological health. Claiming your Human Right to manage your health is your first responsibility. You can't look after others if you die because you neglected yourself. Take it one conscious, deliberate breath at a time. Senator, and see how much calmer and in control of yourself you feel. Walk in peace and strength, Sir.
Kudos to Joe for airing this. I voted for Fetterman and wish him the very best. We KNOW his heart ❤️ is with us Pennsylvanians. Anyone can be a stroke victim or have clinical depression. The issue is to get help.

Look how great he is talking. Depression after a stroke is very common. It can be organic or situational. It needs to be treated. People with mental health problems have a friend in John Fetterman with regard to funding and programs for individuals with mental health problems. Having your communication interfered with by stroke is one of the most depressing issues one can imagine.
My family is falling apart and probably won't make it because my husband is reluctant to get help for his depression. Not enough time to do it, too much money, doesn't want to take medication,...the list goes on. Pretty soon my family won't be together. I know it.

If someone I look up to goes through depression, I find it easier to be kinder to myself after my fight with cancer. John Fetterman is using his platform for the highest good. In today's insane political climate, he is not a breath of fresh air but a true lifeline for sanity.
We love you and your family for exhibiting courage and humanity Senator John Fetterman!
Thank you…from one of the many Americans who supported your campaign because kindness and cooperation will always be the essence of democracy!
Fetterman is doing a fantastic job as a senator.
His sincerity and authenticity is obvious - and heartwarming.
God bless you, Senator Fetterman.
We're all pulling for you.
I love how he's no looking at Joe in the eyes. He's vulnerable and shy. Whether you like him or not, he's the only politician that talks like any one of us normal people not in power. Who else in congress looks, sounds, or acts like Fetterman?
Soooo many people suffer from what this wonderful man is and function just fine, if strong and determined. Thank you Sir for bringing this to the front of the conversation ❤☮
Why I ❤ this guy! Born in NEPA!❤️
Thank you MSNBC for posting this interview. This is a public service, for the depression and brain injury communities, and just for humanity. +1 Fetterman and Joe.
I have such respect and empathy for this man. ♥️
Why ?
😂
It took courage for him to admit that he had a problem, and get the help he needed.
I have the utmost respect for Sen. Fetterman.
Very powerful. I love that man.
Coming back from a catastrophic medical situation is beyond difficult. It takes focus and strength. Congratulations fetterman. Now you must understand this is a never ending process and you must constantly work to keep it at bay. ✊ Fighting!
This was great Joe!! And Fetterman!! My heroes
Fetterman is exactly who Dumcrats say SHOULDN'T POSSESS GUNS..... HE'S GOT MENTAL PROBLEMS.
So take away his shotgun, Dems, before he chases ANOTHER BLACK GUY DOWN THE STREET. C'mon man.
😂
Great interview, thank you
Glad he is feeling better
Depression absolutely sucks. I've lived it for a long time. The hardest thing was admitting myself and I don't have the notoriety that he does. He did the right thing and is doing right by discussing it.
I love the fact your Dad and kids did that for you, John. That’s so cute and incredible. 🥺💗🤗🤗
Good to hear you, take care of yourself, we need you, thank you for stepping up, John.
I love you, John! I was praying for you and told God how much we needed an honorable man like you representing Pennsylvania and begged him to spare your life. So glad to see you're on the mend. Love to Giselle as well. ❤
Depression is the worst thing..ever!
This interview will save lives
Look how great he is talking. Depression after a stroke is very common. It can be organic or situational. It needs to be treated. People with mental health problems have a friend in John Fetterman with regard to funding and programs for individuals with mental health problems. Having your communication interfered with by stroke is one of the most depressing issues one can imagine.
Excellent
My family is falling apart and probably won't make it because my husband is reluctant to get help for his depression. Not enough time to do it, too much money, doesn't want to take medication,...the list goes on. Pretty soon my family won't be together. I know it.
I'm Sorry That You And Your Family Are Suffering, What I Wish For You Now Is To Take Care of Your Mental And Physical Health That You're Not Impacted By Someone Else Decision! Be Your Own Support System❤❤
That's tough
God Bless you John. Everyone has a different battle, a different war to fight. Something tells me you will win in the very end. 👍💗
God Bless him!!
NEVER think people who suffer from Depression are WEAK! Abraham Lincoln and Winston Churchill BOTH suffered from deep depression! Lincoln used humor to deal with his depression! Churchill painted And both these men had to struggle with war ! Civil War for Lincoln , and WWII for Churchill and the bombing of London by the Luftwaffe! Read the book Lincoln's Melancholy ! I highly recommend reading that book! That is how I dealt with bouts of depression . History and reading helped me a lot! 🥰🇩🇪🇨🇭🇺🇲💙💙💙💙📗📘📚📘📗
Glad he can afford to seek help. Many Americans work full time and cannot do so.
So Strong of him. Fetterman 2024
President Fetterman.
Go, John
Pennsylvania's lucky to have a strong senator like John Fetterman.
Glad to hear
