      Thank you for that. I think Lisle is available on Amazon, and I will look. I do use taps, but it's really not often so I would like to find a cheaper set of the tap holders as they would be one of those tools that very rarely gets used. Thanks and have a great Sunday !!

    I think I remember the details on Grandpa's ratchet. SnapOn marketed that particular model for rebuilding starters. When tightening the phillips screws that hold the armature magnet in the starter housing, one had to place it in a press to push on the rear of the square drive to keep the #3 or 4 bit from camming out and slipping.

    • @GarageKing
      @GarageKing  3 місяці тому +2

      You have a good memory, and thank you for the comment. I had no idea what it was marketed for, but for sentimental reasons I keep it. I actually used it quite a bit when I began. Now I use the newer ratchets, but that one stays in the drawer. Thank you for history, and great comment. Hope you are enjoying your Sunday.

    FDX is where it’s at. Not your everyday sockets, but they work very well with rounded fasteners and in my mind better than a twist socket that tears up the head, I’ve been able to reuse the bolt in a pinch, when it’s an oddity, or a size I don’t have in the bolt bin. The edges of the socket have less chamfer than a standard socket and the inside walls of the socket are slightly tapered. They fit tight. Like you almost have to go get a pin punch and knock the bolt out of it kinda tight. I also like the recessed band that helps grab the socket when trying to pull it off the ratchet with greasy hands. I would put them on par with the Mac RBRT Allen head drivers that everyone is raving about. It’s a specialty purpose built tool that works really well for that purpose. If you think the FDX is going to replace your standard flank drive 6 point sockets, you are probably going to be disappointed.

    • @user-zz3dm3ts2i
      @user-zz3dm3ts2i 3 місяці тому +1

      I’d recommend the 1/4” and the 3/8” fdx if you can get them on a buy/getz. I bought the 1/2” fdx sets also but I find not much need in them. If you are on a budget, FDX semi deeps in 1/4” and 3/8”

      @GarageKing  3 місяці тому +1

      Really appreciate your comment and the time you took to write this. I have really been looking at these for a while and passed on the 1/4" drive as I was thinking a real tight bolt might not take the torque of the 1/4". I'm looking at getting the 3/8" drive after your suggestion. After all they are BOGO right now. Thank you.

    Mechanics have absolutely no business approaching a customer's asset with a soldering iron in their hand. There is no part or piece of any vehicle or equipment where a mechanic needs to solder. If he's repairing boards, he has a PROPERLY outfitted workstation (you know, so he doesn't cause more irreparable damage than he found). He will be able to say what the melting point of 60/40 is, and will be happy to explain the specific electrical conductivity of 60/40, and what scenarios might cause predictable consequences. If you see a mechanic walking towards YOUR equipment with a shitbird "soldering iron" and spool of tarnished solder, STOP HIM.

    • @GarageKing
      @GarageKing  2 місяці тому

      Appreciate the comment and see where you are coming from. Most mechanics today simply replace parts, but there are a few of use that repair modules etc. on older cars so you are right most of the time, but not all the time. Please see this video where I repaired the board on a Jaguar, and saved myself about $1000. ua-cam.com/video/8nJBogEXkTY/v-deo.html That's not the only one, I have done others on classic cars when no parts are available. But I hear what your saying, most of the time soldering is not needed on a new car.
