What I dealt with while being a Substitute Teacher in Houston at Lamar High School, was Way Over The Max Number of Students allowed per class. I taught a Science class that had 51 students. That is 26 over the State Maximum of 25. I had applied for a job full time there. They told me there was not enough money in the budget. While the School Board President was being paid a Salary of $213,000 a year plus a Car, All insurance and a Super Clause that allowed for a buyout at 1.5 million if he resigns for any reason.

Why is this such an awful event? There are schools who are, historically, failing the students opportunities to be educated in safe, inviting settings. Teachers in HISD moan and groan about their employer constantly then March against improvement . WHY? I don't understand their FEAR. AND IT IS FEAR. This man is so on spot. Charter schools are NOT as good as a district school. Trust me. This is so obviously political and that's pathetic. Thank God for his courage, his knowledge, his fight for our children's educational quality.

Emily Craig, Damon Archer and Leslie Haack with Katy ISD are all aware of possible illegal activity at a high school involving band and band booster fees and potential shakedowns of students for fees in a way that is likely illegal according to a UIL Music official.

@@alexander1902 Looks can be deceiving. No he wasn't the sharpest knife 🗡 in the drawer but he genuinely cared about the HISD Kids Education. He wasn't interested in Money, Power and Political Parties like the Teachers Union and Leadership HISD had in place. What is happening now, should have happened 30 years ago with HISD. Now we are going to find out who really cares about the Children and not their own selfish interest. Look at how the teachers are quitting on the kid's. Those are one's HISD never needed. Be Blessed 🙏

Failing academics is a symptom of the social breakdown in the neighborhoods those schools serve.
My daughter goes to Bellaire and they had 21 national merit scholars. Her AP classes are highly engaging and she and her friends are on to college in a year.
There's no magic academic bullet that will suddenly get these students in these schools excell.....it's social, cultural and economic.

Schools are not the problem. Educators go to college to get degrees in their field because they have a passion for the subject and an interest in teaching. The problem is really the communities. Families do not uphold the values and expectations of their young doing well in schools. Without a change in the culture to where education is not frowned about, things will not change. It is not a race thing. It is a cultural thing and this culture touches all colors. It takes a community...families and schools. Regardless who runs the district, if the community is not encouraging, nothing will improve.

It's very much a race thing. The TEA only take over minority districts. Yes...HISD has corruption. But it's based on race. And when white people fled HISD it gave precedent to leaders in Austin to do what they are doing. If lamar, westside,, sharpstown, Bellaire ,heights looked like they did when I was in school NOBODY would be taking over HISD....

I agree with most things said here; however, the root causes do not pertain to “black/brown” communities. Race is not a part of it. There are individuals from the board, administrators, school faculty/staff, who do not care. We need to hire people in a different way; we need to hire people who care.
