Purifying Water by boiling is simple. It's effective. It's also time consuming, requires time to cool and has some other negative aspects. We discuss these points and more.
Here's a quick how to video along with some of the science that's involved. iodine

I was at 17 years old in 1967 out at Philmont Boy Scout Camp in New Mexico and found out I was allergic to the iodine tables for our water and my neck puffed up like a puffer fish. So I had to use the old Halazoine pills and within less than 24 hours my neck went back to normal. I was scared out of my mind they were going to Evacuated me. We had like 4 days left of enjoying the great outdoors and than my boots blew out so I finished the hiking and camping in tennis shoes. It was great time.
Interesting video, I guess once the water is boiled and the pathogens have been killed, you could take a filter and pour it into another container to get rid off all that ash and dirt and stuff.
Just a suggestion, maybe it would be best if you'd drink the water that you boiled. To prove that you really do drink what you boiled. Just my two cents. Good video though to boil water.
Right!?😄
He's a blabbering idiot!!
@@stickology4475 youre a fucking idiot. If you get water from a flowing stream its safe after being boiled. Common sense isn't always common.
@@amberlyne331 remember though boiling doesn't remove everything from water
Hahaha what would that add? Would watching a man drink water on camera push you over your skepticism on whether or not boiling water kills microbes? Like if he doesn't then the vote is still out? Do you also want him to sit on camera for 48 hrs to prove he doesn't get diarrhea?
Pro-tip: rubberband the bandanna around the lid before you dip your water. You can harvest and filter particulates in one go.
“For your initial filtering, why not pick up a bank bag. It is a heavy duty canvas bag that the banks ship coins in. You may be able to get one from your bank, but you can buy them on Amazon. Just use the bag to get water from a stream or lake, then hang it up, let the water trickle out of it the bottom corners into a second container. This gets rid of the leaves, bugs and m
I'd love to reply to some of these comments but due to the 'awesome' changes on youtube I can't do that.
I boiled my water at home and a bunch of white powder was on the bottom of the pot I'm guessing that something is wrong with the water here?
@@jasonquackenbush1528 was it ocean water usually if it's salt water it turns white at the bottom but anything not ocean water then its something else I don't know of
I just boiled me a pot of drinking water at home and there was a bunch of white powder at the bottom of the pot wtf is that supposed to be like that
Nearly 12 minutes, watching a man in the woods boiling water!!! 😨😨 The end is near! 😂😂
Let me know the times I needed for boiling. Never know what might happen. I live on an island so tons of water in case
Bro how did you know??

U are a true psychic 🔮 😃
One day it may save your life. Humble yourself.
Sounds like a good series coming up!
Thanks for covering this topic. I look forward to your other water purification methods.
Thank you! I really enjoyed this video.
With a fire this size how long from start did you have to leave the can?
Thanks. I use a Kelly Kettle. It is the most efficient method I have seen and all you need is sticks and twigs as fuel.
nice video, I use the can method and bring it to a rolling boil.
Good series man. Interesting subject.
Thank you, sir. Always enjoy your videos; you explain things so well that its enjoyable to listen to you!
I agree
Would it help cool it off if you burry it in the ground a little
In my opinion, I think it'd make a lot of sense to get some coffee filters in your bugout bag & maybe carry 2 water bottles so youre not drinking all the gunk.
Great video , ought to look into the sawyer squeeze
I'll probably never need to use this but it's always good to know :)
Oh how this aged well
Loved the video but i was thinking you could flatten out a strainer and put it on the lid of your water can to keep any seeds or wood bits from getting in there
How abaut using a lid (stone or smth)?
Always use a filter that takes out bacteria before boiling, especially if you're on or have just been on antibiotics. Bacterial spores are insensitive to boiling, and water 'purification' tabs. The acids in the stomach revive these spores and they start colonizing the intestines rapidly as there are no competitors, in most cases leading to very severe diarrhea, which is very bad in a survival situation. As for boiling water in a coffee can, that bpa lined stuff is BAD guys. It's not designed to be heated to that extent and starts giving off nasties to your water. Best bet would be to burn the coating off in the fire and wash it again before using it to prepare food or drinks.
Dutch Bushcraft Guy you’re wrong.
@@trijigon what part?
D4W_2_wheel_bandit the first half
@@trijigon Okay then fair enough, cheers.
Really a value for learning. Cheers
A great way to filter the dirty water after boiling is to find a plastic bottle and stuff it full of paper towel or a t shirt/ sock if that’s all you have. You can melt holes in the bottom of the bottle and pour dirty water through it it. I prefer t shirt or sock as it is reusable but paper towel works so well it’s incredible
Why didnt u drink the water?
Notice that he is getting the water from a flowing source. So it's being changed. It's not the same water.
How did you notice ?
Nice Vid-I use the Sawyer squeeze water filter also
That is really good information .😄
Good stuff. Interested in more.
Great video. cooking it above the fire will avoid ash getting inside your water
I'm here in cause I cant find any water during the Coronavirus lol
Well get water from sink gay bob
thanks Luke liked it lot of info
Thanks buddy, nice video.
***** Thank you Tim.

I really appreciated this video is very educational you took your time you explained everything well but could you please tell us how to do the tap water in our house cuz it put in all these chemicals in it thank you
I’ve seen the exploding rock thing! We built a fire pit and apparently used some bogus rocks... out of nowhere.... BAM shoots out and hits the garage. So dangerous. I heard of a dude who got hit in the neck and was seriously hurt.
Thanks
Something I’ve done in the past is use coffee filters to get the chunks out of it they don’t weigh much they don’t take up much space
Thank you
Thank you!🔥🔥🔥
Excellent
Nice vid....would only suggest a cover for your pot...
Good info and you sure have a passion for the out doors.
I just moved into an old apartment bldg. and the water from the sink is making my stomach a bit upset....should I boil my water to make my powdered drinks and to drink in my water bottles?
Brenda Izaguirre no you should call the fucking code enforcement agency
I don’t understand, how long do I need to boil it?
Until it boils good buddy!

nice video. Another alternative is Sawyer Filter (0,1 micron) plus any chemical purifier (clorine, aquamira, iodine, etc). The Sawyer purifier (0,02 micron) is too slow.
thanks for the video ;)
In a survival situation you take what you can find. But cans have glues and coatings that are not designed to take heat. Better off using a filter or a stainless, titanium, aluminum container. JMHO.
shcmoly the glue on the can is on the outside and comes off just as easily as the paper does...you said it yourself "you take what you can find"
The plastic coatings on the insides of modern cans can be burned off in the fire. Then you can safely scrub it in the stream and use it for boiling.
I say "What's 60 seconds?" That doesn't require any additional fuel and you aren't looking at any noticeable loss of water.
So if i find a clearish puddle of water in the bush, i can boil then water for a couple of minutes and it's good to go?
Yea that's ok
115breno yeah, running water is better tho
Is boiling rain water ok to drink?
Rain water considered 👍 as long as collected in a sanitary way.
While water will rarely be crystal clear as in your will have tannins in the water from leaves, roots, ect.
But turbidity in the water can be harmful, not only can bacteria essentially escape the heat by hiding in the debri it can also irritate the bowels causing diarrhea.
Taking that extra step of filtering your water through ideally a mil bank bag can save you alot of lost valuable water in the long term.
Milbank bags weight next to nothing and can be carried in your pocket easily. No excuse not to have one.
Do you think cheesecloth would work for filtration?

Awesome Video Buddy When I`m Hiking I Use A Filtering Straw But I Use This Method A lot ! Good Video
Pooo
you mean to drink not eat??
nice video :-)
Who else is here to prepare for running away and living in the woods as a forest goblin?
Me. Lol. I won some money from the lottery and bought a van and converted it to live in.
Boiling water must be best as you never have to buy filters etc which may be a problem for long stretches outdoors miles from civilisation. thanks.
The two methods are complementary since they solve different problems in water purification. Filtration only removes physical particulates that are larger than the mesh. It doesn't kill/remove microbes that are smaller than the mesh. So ideally ,it is best til filter the water and then boil it. That way, you have the best of both solutions.
I noticed you said goodluck with trying to start a fire when it's raining to boil water but all you have to do is catch the rain....wouldn't ya?
Rain water isn’t necessarily clean water. You should treat rain water whenever possible.
Why wa so even searching for this
Interesting fact: Water does not boil at 212 degrees F. Its BP decreases as you increase in elevation.
Here in the Ozarks, water boils at 210. There are charts online.
Me watching this knowing damn well I won't leave my house ever:
*_Ohh! That might come in handy later on!_*
Im sure the electricution process alone burnt some body fat. Its always good to have some body fat reserved just in case one were to get electicuted or struck by lightning. I believe that your recent weight gain is due to your body's own self defense mechanism, just in case you were ever to get electricuted again. Another thing. Yoga enthusiasm, i noticed when you do your pushups off yor palms, you are more on the pinky side of the hand. In yoga, they teach spreading the fingers as wide as possible and pressing mostly with the knuckles of the pointer finger, the minger and the ring finger. It takes the pressure off the wrists. Just a little tip from someone who had completed many a yoga session.
Using a tin can to boil water is not a good idea because the can have soldering which may result in leeching into the water. It could contain lead.
Why doesn't this guy use Centigrade/Celsius like people normally use for boiling water? He doesn't even say what scale he is using is it Fahrenheit, Kelvin or something even more obscure?
I'd be drinking straight tap water and I had a headache after but I'll start boiling my water thanks
Actually it's the steam you want to catch,,it's the purist form of drinking water
Somewhat true but it’s always best to boil water, running water can still have pathogens
@@acamelwholikescoke4641 I'm not talking about running water...
I'm talking about boiling water which just because boiled it's still not 100% safe.. the steam caught from boiling water to my understanding is pure and 100% safe.
Thos guy is so cool like wtf
Feet ? Above the ocean...? Feet above what ?
The problem is in the zombie apo. the time
at Kubi - i dont think there is going to be a Zombie Apocalypse .
Really would have liked if you drank the water you boiled instead of that water jug in the background it would give me a peace of mind. Not to mention you wasted your time.
In the beginning of the video, you said boiling for 30min :S
I missed the part where he drinks the water lol
You didn't even drink it
It was boiling hot...
- Luke
You could have had a bucket of ice to cool it before drinking to simulate it cooling down over time. Point is you still didn't drink it. Water also has to be filtered before it's boiled, so dirt and such won't be drank too, which is probably why you didn't drink it on camera.
he probably just wasted it and spilled it out cause i did not want to drink it cause he does not believe in what hes saying. i honest to god don't think he drank it, this video is a probably a scam.
This guy way burning wet wood 😂
It looks like there were enough rocks around that you could use to make a small rocket stove. JMHO.
Boiling water. The lowest tech of purifying water.
Of course it was a coffee can LOL.
David Andrews Hahaha Dang Right it was!

That's informative, but a 12 minutes video of just boiling the water nothing more is just a waste of time
You can tell this guy is not american because he said especially americans expect all water to be crystal clear.
+Braxton Claflin Americans especially think that clear water is clean water.
That isn't the case.

How do u separate it from still being present in your water boiling kills it all seriously???
With that water running like that it should be purified by the elements in the ground
Thanks
