The saddest part of this episode is how William Shatner's role in this episode is a reflection of his relationship with his co-stars on Star Trek: The Original Series. He is known to have fallen out of favor with most of them for numerous reasons, although he has made efforts at making amends with them, with varying but mostly good degrees of success. Here, he plays a bigoted parent who alienated himself from his own daughter and missed every opportunity to patch things up before she tragically passed away. It's easy to see Grand Pear not only as a tragic yet ultimately redeemed figure, but also as a means for Shatner to express his real-life regrets.
I know this comment is 3 years old, but yeah I picked up on that right away thanks to having taken French classes in college. I find that fascinating to make the Pears "French" because I've always felt the Apples were more "German" thanks to a few hints throughout the series like especially in Apple Family Reunion, you saw one Apple in traditional German attire and Cider is pretty much the equivalent to beer, which has German roots. And Germany and France didn't always get along in the past either. That's just my insight though.

I'm pretty sure a lot of ponies just change their names from what they parents named them once they get old enough. Maybe to match their cutie mark and or/some other cirumstance like marriage and stuff. But I am pretty sure chaning your legal name is way more of a common cultural thing in Equestria.

I agree this is a perfect episode, I'm thankful William Shatner being the same age as his buddy and fellow star trek cast member Lenard Nimoy, who died a couple years before this episode came out was still alive to bring his acting range, portraying a young asshole to a sweet old guy in a show he really likes from his home country of Canada.
Fun factoids about Equestrian toilets: Before Perfect Pear, the only time we'd seen a toilet was when Dodge Junction was on screen. This took place in both Over a Barrel and Party Pooped (ha). In Over a Barrel, it's the only time we've ever had a pony needing to use the bathroom with Pinkie needing to pee really bad. AJ exits the outhouse. In Party Pooped, Pinkie runs into Cherry Jubilee as she exits the outhouse. But! While this may seem like the only use of bathrooms was this, there was one more instance. Back in Three's a Crowd, where Discord fakes being sick with blue flu, he sneezes away Bon Bon's house, and there's a toilet visible while she's wearing a towel on her head as if post-shower.

I love the perfect pairs one of the best My Little Pony episodes of the whole series I hope they make another their episode just like this and it's the only main six pairs that are dead and that is so sad and it's finally good that you get to see a flashback of exactly how they look so I'm finally so happy that we got to see you and I just love this episode so much bears and apples come together as one
