It is illegal, to read a book you have purchased publicly without getting permission to publicly perform it from the publisher and author of the book. And they won't let you do so for free, even if you don't intend on making money. No one's going to ask JK Rowling if they can publicly perform her work so that she can charge them who knows whatever when they could literally just let a machine do it for them. Is this currently stuck in illegal gray area in which because the supreme Court already deemed the AI as not human-made work it isn't a human publicly performing in the work and therefore doesn't currently key word here is currently violate copyright protection. To the legal system you reading a book you purchased publicly without paying to do so first is no different than you popping a DVD in your DVD player and playing it for the entire town. Even if you don't charge for that you're not legally allowed to do it.
