- Oftentimes, if we wear a lei, someone will ask us, “is it your birthday?” And while birthdays are of course great occasions to wear lei, so is every other day of our lives. Lei are for special times, but they can also be given or worn anytime that you want someone to feel special.
Join Ānuenue Pūnua and her two daughters Koʻiahi and Maʻaloa as she talks about learning how to make lei from her mother and teaches us three common but elegant lei that we can make and give to ourloved ones. Pua kenikeni is not always as easy to find, but pua melia and lāʻī are quite common and abundant. With these three lei in your repertoire, you can make use of the beautiful pua and lāʻī that we see around us so often. As Ānuenue reminds us, a lei is so much more special when it comes from you and the materials come from this ʻāina. Lei making is a tradition in the Pūnua family, and even if it isn’t a tradition in yours, it’s never too late to start.
Thank you for sharing. Love how you train the next generation your talent, so the tradition goes on and on. God Bless❤
Mahalo! Your family, legacy and culture is rich and beautiful.
Beautiful queens! Thank you for preserving such a majestic culture.
Mahalo for sharing your family tradition. I grew up here in Hawai'i but just learned how to handle Pua kenikeni thanks to you!
Mahalo for showing us how lei making is done. The pua keni keni lei is really special and
Fragrant. The pua melia lei is awesome and the la'i lei is great for gift giving. Mahalo for sharing your manao and thank you for taking the time to share with us this special craft.
Mahalo. I have 2 giant pua keni keni and am always too scared of the bruising to even attempt a lei. Now i can with confidence. The ti leaf lei, ive made plenty but always a silly, haole kine closure but this technique is how i going make them in the future. I also love your idea to freeze the ti for future use, having short notice. When i want to make a ti lei normally i just cut the spine out, line up the straight edges into a stack then roll them up like i would a money roll. I put the roll into a big water jug then i simple add boiling water and put the lid on. I can continue about other chores until the leaves are tender.
Your video makes me even more proud of hawaiian culture being pono. Aloha

Thank you so much for sharing! Hello from Maui !!!
I have a question… For the Plumeria lei- can that be stored in the refrigerator? I kind of need one for tomorrow… And I was thinking of using dental floss and storing it overnight in the refrigerator?
Mahalo nui for sharing!

Mahalo ohana!❤😊
Love this! How do you prep your pua melia before and after you kui your lei? Do you wash off the sap from the flowers? What is the best way to store the lei? I have gotten brown spots/ streaks when stored in the refrigerator . Mahalo.
Mahalo nui loa ❤️🌸❤️
Mahalo!!
Mahalo for the video! I only have one small puakenikeni tree right now. Can only pick about 10 flowers at once, not enough to make a lei. Is there any way to pick some and keep them until I can pick another set to make a complete lei that has flowers the same color?
Thank you for sharing. I wanted to know if I can pay you to send me a couple of puakenikeni leis for a graduation in California. I’ve searched many many websites but no one has this lei for sale. Or if you can send me enough loose flowers to make 2 leis, I would compensate and greatly appreciate it. Please let me know. Mahalo.
Mem can I have some seeds of this plant.. please help.
