  • Grotbags has a plan involving a flower that has a disastrous effect on anyone who smells it. Can she manage to fool Rod into taking a quick whiff, and what's the antidote for when it (hypothetically speaking) all goes horribly wrong? This episode was originally broadcast on Friday, 19th April, 1985, and features the song Keep On Trying from the Disney album Mousercise.
Before we go any further, we need to talk about Boggle. Remember how in 1984 an episode of Emu's All Live Pink Windmill Show didn't happen because of a strike in the props department? Well, that led to a reshuffle of the remainder of the series, and ultimately one instalment of Boggle's Kingdom was left unused - until this point in 1985. The previous week's episode had some sort of setup about Prince Poorly bugging Whimsical Castle, but now we're treated to a seemingly unrelated storyline about Dreamy Village entering the space race. So, what should have been aired in episode seven of the first series is now serialised across episodes two, three (which we're still missing, incidentally), and four of the second. I'm convinced that all shots relating to the subplot of Poorly and his men are brand new, but it's all interwoven pretty much seamlessly.
Anyway, the rest of the episode. I got a big laugh out of Grotbags using her least subtle approach to date, and an unintended one from the ad break jingle disastrously misfiring and sounding completely ludicrous. The new Pink Windmill Kids belatedly get to introduce themselves during the Post Office, which is nice, and it's also great to see Spencer and Alex presenting the Twin Schools section. I really feel for poor little Abbie, as she nearly has a complete mare on the Spin Quiz prizes - happily, she pulls it all together just in time and no harm done. Speaking of the twinning (as we were), if you went to either Matthew Pearce Public School in Toongabbie or Radford Primary School near Nottingham, you'll want to look out for that section. Meanwhile, Rod and Emu help decorate a viewer's room, and the repeated song at the end is that 'Putting your best foot forward' one that no-one on the planet seems to be able to identify. (Can you?)
I make no secret of the fact that, in my opinion, the 1985 series was when the energy of the Pink Windmill shows peaked - and this episode does nothing to dissuade me of that. It's like they had their trial run last year, and it turned out very well indeed, but this year it's all going to be just that little bit quicker and tighter, and the series even generally gets better as it goes on. You're in for a real retro 80s treat.
Stay tuned at the beginning and end for some Children's ITV continuity presented by Ken Jones, in character from Behind the Bike Sheds, although he's possibly most remembered as Bernard "Horrible" Ives in Porridge. Round these parts he's Professor Sparkes from Turn On to T-Bag, of course. (Coincidentally, the very first episode ever of T-Bag had aired just a couple of weeks earlier, also on Ken's watch.)
Many thanks to Spencer for lending me this tape.
