Do you need the extension cable? 1. Humminbird to Humminbird back to back you need it (female to female). This is true even if the short dongle reaches. 2. Humminbird directly to trolling motor: You need it but get the male to female and it should come with the trolling motor. 3. The trolling motor does not need an extension cable if it reaches the switch. But you can use it if you feel like. 4. The trolling motor does not need the extension cable (male to female) that comes with the trolling motor if it can reach the Humminbird fish finder. But you can use it if you just feel like it. 5. The Humminbird units need the female to female extension cable even if the 5 to 8 dongle can reach another Humminbird that will be connected back to back or even if the Humminbird 5 to 8 dongle can reach the switch. 6. If you didn't need the extension cable for your trolling motor and you bought a female to female extension cable that is too short, you can use the male to female extension cable to extend it. Distance limitation for Ethernet is 328 feet or 100 meters.
Woo that's good info. I did buy the Humminbird switch for the dash for the ability to run 2 transducers but that probably has nothing to do with it. And wasn't going to use it since I only am using one transducer for how but could put it in and use it for the future. No plans on ever selling the boat. I'm retired on fixed income.
"WHY DO THEY HAVE TO MAKE THIS SO HARD "Ok, Here is what I have installed. On Bow, Ulterra 112 with I-Pilot link remote control and 360 mounted. From the Ulterra there is a Ethernet cable not yet hooked up round small 3-4 pin. At the dash a Solix 12 going under dash to a Ethernet box. Also a transducer running from the back. Right now only one fishfinder but plan on adding a used Humminbird 998 I have so day but not for a year or so until I figure out how to use all this stuff. So I guess I need to run that small 4 pin Ethernet from the trolling motor with a extension cable about 15 ft to Ethernet box under dash. Confussed yet. What cable and product number do I need is the big question
OK so on the Solix you don't need the 5 to 8 pin dongle adapter. I should have probably noted that in the video. My video you can take everything literally if you have Helix or 8xx, 9xx, or 11xx units. So that's #1 to get rid of your confusion.
Here's a link to the back of a Solix. The connection 1 to the left of the yellow circle is the Ethernet. So you can see there's no dongle cable needed. For universal sonar which again has the type of 3-4 pin connector you're talking about that does need a dongle because it's universal. Then to make the connection you need the adapter for the manufacturer. In your case you have the Humminbird adapter. Lawrance uses a round connection for their connection. Then it's a matter if can the universal sonar reach or do you need to extende it. www.google.com/search?q=humminbird+solix+ethernet&safe=off&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwiQ09O46tbdAhWZCDQIHTKSCuoQ_AUIDygC&biw=1920&bih=938#imgrc=wa6J3j5i87-ErM:
I think the answer to your question is. You need this product: www.amazon.com/Humminbird-720073-5-foot-Ethernet-Cable/dp/B005LSLNSE/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1537902021&sr=8-2&keywords=humminbird+ethernet This is the female to female connection. You should have gotten a male to female connection that came with your trolling motor. Again, that's only if it doesn't reach. So if you throw the Ethernet switch in the storage area in the very front of your boat under where your trolling motor is mounted, then you don't need that extension cable. If you throw the switch by your console, then you will need it. And you will also need to make a run for your 360 as well to connect to your switch.
There's only one Ethernet switch for Helix units. (Technically you can make a regular Ethernet switch work if the voltage and amps match what Humminbird makes, but it will not be made for outdoors). Just make sure your Helix units are networkable. I think 7 is the lowest number it goes that it networkable. And not all 7's are. Make sure it has the letter N in the name. So it's not the switch, it's the Helix itself that you need to make sure that can connect to the switch.
Great video very help full. My question is even though you don't need the Ethernet box but have it can you still go thru it to hook up 2 devises for now knowing I might add a third item or unit For right now I just have a head unit at the console and a ulterra 112 w/Pilot link and a transducer on the transom and a transducer on the trolling motor. I understand the built in transducers aren't to good
Great video Brandon. I currently have a helix 8 g4n in the console with a transom transducer. I would like to add a helix 9 g4n mdi+ an a mega 360 to the bow. My trolling motor is an older terrova so no networking needed there. Any suggestions or advice? Thank you.
You can replace the head and get the original I Pilot Link. Otherwise you have to get a new trolling motor if you want jog. But I find you can mimic jog with Go To position feature with spot lock as your default arrival mode.
Hey thanks for the video Brandon. I'm thinking getting the Ulterra Ipilot-link. Right now I have a Helix 12 and 10 G2N at the console that i have connected to each other ethernet wise so I can run off one transducer. So for my understanding, if i was to get the ulterra and want to connect all 3 together, then I would need the Ethernet switch box? If thats the case i might need to reconsider the the whole link system because that switch box isn't cheap and I didn't prepare that in my budget and not accounting for all the other adapter cables i would need.
JoeShowFishing you can get an Ulterra with I Pilot Link and just use non link features until you find the money for the switch. Spot lock, record a track, and auto pilot will work. Then when you get the switch follow the contour will work.
Or here's another trick. Buy the Ulterra on a new credit card that offers a signup bonus and then you can basically look at it as the switch is free. Here's a link to one example of where you can do this. You spend $500 and get $200 back plus 1.5% back on everything on top of that. www.referyourchasecard.com/18a/YD0MKTVKU5
@@skwira000 Just trying to consider the trade off and after rethinking it I probably won't even use the link feature much. Appreciate the help! And im quite the credit card geek so those are one of my 20 credit cards that i have!
JoeShowFishing for me, even though some of the features work without I Pilot Link you’re operating blind. When I have auto pilot mode on, I can look at my graph and see where it’s taking me rather than eye balling it. In spot lock mode when I jog in deep water I can see the depth where I’m jogging.
Great Video and I need your help. I am installing right now. A Humminbird Solix 12 and have a Ethernet box. I have a Minn Kota Ulterra 112 with I-Pilot Link and 360 Imagining. I am good on everything except the Ethernet cable coming off the Ulterra. Its a a round end and how had a 2 ft extension on it thats square with 3 pins in it. What am I missing or doing wrong. Hope this explains it right Thanks for the help. cable
I'm guessing you're probably referring to the Universal sonar adapter. The cable you are likely referring to is the adapter. Then if you need to run it to a console fish finder you can buy the extension which is round on both sides, but to connect it to the fish finder you still need that short adapter cable you just referred to. Ethernet for Minn Kota and Humminbird are all round connections.

Hi there Ulterra Ipilot link mega SI on bow helix ten SI networking model at console, with transducer off the back. Do I need a Ethernet switch to get them together? Or can the transducer from the trolling motor work with the dash mount helix and it’s transducer off the back?
I counted 2 devices based on what told me so no. You will need to buy an extension cable for your transducer to reach your console fish finder. The only transducer that plugs into the network is the 360.
@@quincypryor2277 you can 100% use the transducer just on your Ulterra. You just lose depth when you run the outboard on the back with the trolling motor stowed.
