My mother tongue is Telugu. I was born and brought up in Karnataka, and I was educated in Kannada medium schools. My wife is a Maharashrian. I love speaking, reading and writing in Kannada. To me acquiring languages is like acquiring wealth. People heartily welcome when you try to communicate in their language. If Deepika or for that matter, any number of my relatives who live in Bengaluru pretend they cannot speak, write and speak in Kannada. Misguidedly they think it is fashionable to be ignorant. The loss is entirely theirs. By calling them names we somehow betray our own inferiority complex. Let me assure you Kannada will not become great because some pretty lady talks in Kannada. By the way list of writers who have contributed richly to Kannada literature and whose mother tongue is not Kannada is long: DVG, Rajaratnam, Karnad, AK Ramanujan, Devudu, Veerakesari Seetharama Shastry, DaRa Bender....Do we really need Deepika???

I don't understand why you people are so angry she can't speak the language properly. Some of you are saying shame on her cuz she was born and raised in a state that spoke the language but that literally has nothing to do with how fluent you are. She hasn't spoken the language in what 8-10 years? No matter how fluent you were before, there's no way in hell you'd be after that much time. From my personal experience, I used to speak Turkish fluently 5 years ago and today I struggle to remember how to say "good morning" in Turkish. Just because she forgot a LANGUAGE doesn't mean she forgot her roots and where she came from. God calm down!!

Read my comment properly. I can speak,read and write in gujarati and hindi, speak kuchchi fluently as that is my mother tongue and the whole family speak all the time. Born and brought up in Kerala- spoke and read Malayalam fluently and had very good grip speaking konkani as our neighbours were all GSBs. For over 36 years now, I reside in UK and have no contact with any Malayalam or Konkani speaker. On my visits back home, I can still converse in those languages but get stuck often as I cannot remember all words. When asked 'when did you arrive?' I struggled to say day-before-yesterday. Don't take it as lack of respect. I have always been proud of my ability to speak 6/7 languages. I am also aware now I am weak in 2 of them. Many people study 1 or 2 extra languages in school but if they do not use them at all, might remember a few words only as time goes past.
Remembering people, faces, places is different to speaking a language.

There are many kodava(coorg) tuluva konkani actors in kannada film industry whose mother tongue is different but they speak very good kannada but only rashmika n deepika act like they dnt knw kannada even after both stayed in karnataka for 20+ years...
For eg: rakshith shetty rishabh shetty shine shetty pramod shetty DIA Movie heroes rohit shetty pruthvi ambar n nidhi subbayya, deepika kamayya ,anu poovayya, cricketer ayyappa, bhuvan ponnappa shweta changappa harshika poonacha.. all have different mother tongue but speak good kannada.. but only rashmika n deepika act like they do nt knw kannada.. I have seen deepika padukone speaking fluent kannada in her first kannada movie interview.. 😂😂
