So completely accurate! Through luck and circumstance, we became casual friends in the 80's. Kurt was really funny, and the conversations could tangent or get multi-layered and abstract, then burst into silliness. His loss was the person he was, and not just his music. I honestly think had he lived and retained his sense of humor, in time, the world would've likely loved him even more than they already do. I still don't like talking about it, but I just wanted to finally say, after watching many of these interview bits with various people, that these are all excellent, and you're getting the right people who were there. Everyone who knew him, and pretty much everyone (that I knew) in the Seattle music scene at the time, all were obviously greatly affected by his death, and despite over 26 years having passed, many I know are only recently talking about their experiences and memories. For the majority of the people, who didn't know Kurt at all, this series of interviews gives an accurate glimpse of Kurt as I also knew him. For those of us who did meet or know him, these are like polishing off good memories, and triggering other memories long ago put away. They're also very digestible - long enough to get into a story or three, but not so long that the heaviness of the other parts of the story seep into it too much. Great job! Keep it up!
I will answer this, but as i said, I don't really want to talk about this stuff too much right now (thank you in advance for understanding). We met at a party in the U-District in Seattle, sometime in the mid/late 80's (87-ish). One thing was being passed from him to me, and a mutual friend laughed about the lefty to lefty pass, and made some joke that incorporated "left handed Pieces", and we both reacted, which led us to find we have very similar birthdays. We then talked about music we liked, and it went from there. The Seattle music scene (and surrounding areas) prior to 1990/91, was very interwoven. The doc Hype! is very accurate and insightful on this, and the after effect of Kurt's passing. Keep enjoying these interviews, Nirvana fans, it's all super good stuff!

"He was pulled at from so many different directions" THANK YOU. This is something most people don't understand, Kurt Cobain I think wanted to be a successful musician but he NEVER wanted to be the most popular musician in the world. His band ceased to become his anymore, at that point. EVERYONE wanted a piece of him and the band for as long as they were going to be "the big thing". He had no say over most of the concerts they performed, where they'd be playing, for how much, or why, he was basically told by his tour manager like "OK, next stop Tucson, AZ" and Kurt's like "How many days before we actually get to take a break?" and they're like "Oh.... well, uhhh we take a brief hiatus from the tour for a few days or so in... two months. I think on some level Kurt truly felt trapped by his own success and at some point he just got tired of fighting with everyone (plus he was just complacent and distant because of the high level of narcotics he was drowning himself in) so his managers and business people basically re-wrote the band's contracts such that he'd get the VAST majority of the money they made from record sales and otherwise, so honestly if he didn't die I don't think Nirvana would've made it another two years. I love this article on Earnie. LMAO at this early line in the article: "I bought my first electric guitar. Upon realizing that learning to make chords was going to be slow and challenging, I decided to completely dismantle and reassemble my Ibanez Destroyer". Now that's a different mind, folks.
I haven’t seen the whole interview yet, but if I would like you to ask him how Kurt managed to constantly get iconic and memorable guitar tone throughout his entire career. It’s truly amazing how he was able to have a guitar sound utterly unlike anybody else’s with some basic equipment.

Kurt himself? I feel like he was an “anti-gear head” in terms of his equipment. He used very basic stuff live, especially. Most of his guitars were used jaguars and mustangs because they were affordable back then. (The metalheads didn’t want them.) He used like a Boss DS1 and a DS2 sometimes. (Might have that opposite on the frequency of use) and then a pretty standard amp setup. The Kurtsequipment website details his stuff pretty well. The only “odd” thing he did was on In Utero when he has a really weird pedal that almost broke one day, but it was (to Kurt at least) vital to the sound he wanted for In Utero. Once it got fixed he said, “the album is saved.”
@@Ghosty6464 I don't think he was "anti-gear." I think he understood (1) the sound he was going for could be achieved with simple gear , and (2) less is more. He knew what he wanted knew he didn't have to get 9 pedals to do what a DS-1 did
He wasn't really that interested, he didn't seem to like trying loads of gear. He had his Fender quad reverb and Randall amp, and practiced in a closet with probably mainly a mustang and/or mosrite. His live setup was basically a high spec preamp and a PA power amp, probably the most stripped back setup you can get away with considering the volume they played at and the size of some of the places they played. Interestingly Steve Albini said that his live rig sounded like shit in the studio for In Utero. If it worked ok, it got used; no sense in complicating it I guess.
@@FreddieFoxxx100 I talked to one of his "friends" and she said KC probably didn't know about them b/c they're banned at a lot of places he went. No way KC would've killed himself if he could of went jet skiing. They cure depression!

Kurt was such a genius that he ended up in a relationship/marriage with one of the most horrible, disgusting people on this planet. He also did hard drugs and constantly seemed to be smoking cigarettes. Maybe he was a masochist. Maybe he really meant what he said when he said - "I hate myself and want to die", and "look on the bright side's suicide". He was a troubled human being. Stop trying to deify him, or trying to claim him to be something that he wasn't. He wrote good songs, but there's thousands, maybe even millions of talented songwriters in the world who will never get any recognition. Kurt was just very lucky to be in the right place at the right time. Unfortunately for him he didn't seem to enjoy being famous. The music world has little to do with who is the most talented. The music world is mostly to do with who has the most hunger for exposure/publicity, and who has the right "look", and who has the right amount of money behind them to help promote them. If Kurt was overweight and/or ugly, we would've most probably never heard about him, no matter how talented he was.
@@savvasmichael Of course you would say that any argument is void. You are probably too deep into worshipping your dead idol who was manufactured into a deity by the multi-billion dollar corporations (which Kurt said that he hated, by the way). What revelation are you talking about? Did he predict the future of planet earth or something? Also I didn't use the word "better" even once in my comment.
I was just listening to Nevermind today. Hadn’t listened to the full thing in a while. Say what you want about In Utero but the energy on Nevermind is still today unlike anything else... it doesn’t sound like the Pixies. It doesn’t sound like the Melvins. The songs and the energy on that album have NOTHING to do with what Kurt looked like so shut the fuck up with that ridiculous notion. Quit being fucking bitter. The guys dead ffs get on with your shitty life
Being a genius musically doesn't preclude someone from being self destructive. It happens all the time. No one is deifying him. And he was hardly a run of the mill talent. But minor details.
Lol at Earnie’s comment... my friend is a guitar tech for one of the biggest bands in the world..for the lead singer/guitarist..he literally knows how to change strings, tune, plug in and put on a stand and that’s it. The tech side is nothing..it’s the mental side and pressure that’s the hard bit.
Hey man just saw this, interesting perspective, but I think given Cobain’s tendency to destroy guitars, Earnie was more involved on a regular basis. Could you subscribe if you already haven’t by the way? Lot’s more videos to come
Great interview. Some insight into a man that I hold dear to my heart. Thanks. Nirvana and the Pumpkins were the soundtrack of my teenage years and have continued to be the soundtrack of my adult life and my 3 kids life. Long live rock and God Bless America 🇺🇸🇺🇸🤘🤘
Do rockstars normally become friends with their guitar techs? I mean I can see some who are just nice people absolutely, but like... I dunno that's like asking someone how good their friendship is with their boss. Some people get really really close to their bosses and form actual friendships, whereas others kinda keep the employees and their relationship with them as professional as possible. I dunno. There's a lot of people who work behind the scenes on major music tours, was Kurt friends with every single crew member? I doubt it. He was probably actually pretty resentful he had to be there at all for the most part, he actually started hating the rockstar lifestyle pretty fast apparently. He felt enslaved to it, in my opinion.

Huge Nirvana fan but after a few days of watching various Nirvana clips, I can’t help but raise an eyebrow at the deification. It’s on another level with Cobain over even Jimmy Page (Zeppelin are the greatest Rock band ever; Nirvana has nothing on them) or Jim Morrison or Hendrix. The comments are largely people acting like they personally knew Kurt saying how they “miss him”. You still have his music. And I would not call him some sort of lyrical “genius” as he literally whipped up many of the lyrics at the last minute. What DOES make Nirvana great is the energy that they channeled both in the studio and on stage. Pure raw energy. But this shit in this interview about how he’s “in the presence of a precious genius” is just laughable.
They were together on the road.. He might not talk with him for hours to know how was he like. They spent a lot of time working together so obviously they knew each other a bit, despite not being proper friends.
Just saw this: The whole situation with Kurt was very depressing in general I suppose near the end. Could you subscribe if you already haven’t by the way? Lot’s more videos to come
I'm just leaving this comment because You Tube algos are starting to get on my nerves. I watched one Nirvana video don't know how long ago and it doesn't stop showing me Kurt Cobain videos on my feed. To a point it pissed me of. So here it goes. (Im 40 by the way, listened to Nirvana like any other kid in the 90's bla bla bla) WHO GIVES A FUCK ABOUT KURT COBAIN??? SERIOUSLY!? He was a piece of shit junkie that made some nice balads, that's it. This obsession that some zoomers have over this individual is just cultish and lame. They were very famous but their impact on music on the long run, and the whole rock scene was a fart in the wind. Proof? There has been 0 new grunge bands with anykind of impact beyond 1995. Even Dave Groul (i don't know how to spell he's last name and don't care) changed he's sound to a more punk rockish style with FF, by the end of that decade all grunge bands that were still alive were looking to 70s punk for inspiration. It was a short lived phenomenon that aged like shit and Hollywood hipsters are always failing on trying to revive it. Nervermind is a one summer album for 14 years olds at best. If you haven't grown out of Nirvana by the time you're 16-17 you're stuck, probably sucked in this mysticism that old gen z try to build around a dead guy so they can keep selling books and giving interviews. NO MORE NIRVANA, PLEASE. THAT SHIT WAS DEAD AND BURIED BY 1997 AND NOBODY REALLY FUCKING CARES.
Hey just saw this. That’s one of the cool things about Kurt, he wasn’t a virtuoso but he was still great. Could you subscribe if you already haven’t by the way? Lot’s more videos to come
Enough with Kurt Cobain already! Nirvana was pretty good, but there are plenty of better bands, and grunge doesn’t even exist... only crap rock, and wuss rock (besides the fact that they were punk rock)
They were more heavy metal as all grunge was, they had punk attitude, punk is dirty pop as Nirvana was so they were again more pop than punk, also experts didn't label them as heavy metal without reason, to be clear Kurt was far more sensitive than any singer in any big band and far more original and i dont see any big band better than Nirvana nor more original....Nobody has and will ever express max level of insanity as Kurt did, to me they were all singers and Kurt was maniac...Jinious
@@jacksamunster4407 I won't argue the impact they made was big, but green day also did (although they were much more pop punk than nirvana). The one thing I give nirvana major props for, is giving a lot of smaller bands the spotlight in interviews, that's a solid thing to do! IMO the only problem is that it doesn't matter what band you put out there, the masses only like what they hear because it's repeated over and over. I used to play bands like Jimmy eat world at work, and the people hated it... until 3 months later when they got air play. Most people really are sheep, I never understood that about people, why do you need someone else to tell you what sounds good?
@ 2 off the top of my head that kinda have the same basic sound are the descendents, Dag nasty, then maybe a few others like jawbreaker (who opened for them a few times), or samiam. I realize tastes are different, and I don't want to come off as saying nirvana was bad, but it's weird how people go on and on about them as if they invented or perfected a sound, and music died when he did.... it actually did end up dying around the early 2000's, but that's another story for another day.

The trait I share the most with Kurt is our extreme empathy.

I love these interview clips. Thanks so much for doing these. It’s nice to hear the perspectives of different people that surrounded Kurt instead of always hearing from someone like Grohl or Love. Great questions and well done.

Love y’all. Great people right here!
I love this article on Earnie. LMAO at this early line in the article: "I bought my first electric guitar. Upon realizing that learning to make chords was going to be slow and challenging, I decided to completely dismantle and reassemble my Ibanez Destroyer". Now that's a different mind, folks.
Hey just saw this, and that is funny about Earnie 😂 Could you subscribe if you already haven’t by the way? Lot’s more videos to come
I haven’t seen the whole interview yet, but if I would like you to ask him how Kurt managed to constantly get iconic and memorable guitar tone throughout his entire career. It’s truly amazing how he was able to have a guitar sound utterly unlike anybody else’s with some basic equipment.
He’d probably say “I don’t know, you’d have to ask Kurt”
It's in the fingers.

I don’t care what you say but Kurt was the king of Grunge Rock music
Hey Gerardo just saw this, and agreed when it comes to grunge Kurt was king. Could you subscribe if you already haven’t by the way? Lot’s more videos to come
What he doesn't want to say is Kurt was irritable and tired of people and just wanted to left alone and he respected that.
Hey Satchel just saw this, and agreed Kurt’s frustration with everything was such a huge factor in the last part of his life. Could you subscribe if you already haven’t by the way? Lot’s more videos to come
I wonder how much emphasis he put on gear? It kinda feels like he had a sound in his head he was going for
Kurt himself? I feel like he was an “anti-gear head” in terms of his equipment. He used very basic stuff live, especially. Most of his guitars were used jaguars and mustangs because they were affordable back then. (The metalheads didn’t want them.)
He used like a Boss DS1 and a DS2 sometimes.
Sometime I wonder if KC knew that jet skis/wave runners existed. I'm convinced if he had owned one he'd be alive today

Millions of " better " songwriters didn't create a revelation . I know you'll say , they never had a chance , but that argument is void.
Your opinion. And it sucks lol
I love he says "he's also.." in the present

NICE CUT INTERVIEW
Lol at Earnie’s comment... my friend is a guitar tech for one of the biggest bands in the world..for the lead singer/guitarist..he literally knows how to change strings, tune, plug in and put on a stand and that’s it. The tech side is nothing..it’s the mental side and pressure that’s the hard bit.
Kurt completely wrecked gear every night. Nirvana wasn't a regular group to be the tech for.
Hey man just saw this, interesting perspective, but I think given Cobain’s tendency to destroy guitars, Earnie was more involved on a regular basis. Could you subscribe if you already haven’t by the way? Lot’s more videos to come

It went led zeppelin, bruce lee, the cure, and the last poster I ever hung was Nirvana ... lol 😆

Genius doesn't mean virtuoso
He was virtuoso
I don't think Kurt was a no nonsense kind of guy,how did he get along with Courtney, gossiping, drama and nonstop talking
I may be mistaken but I think he had bipolar disorder and it got him in the end together with all the pressures. He wanted out. And his girlfriend was really fucked up. Not a good combination. RIP
Hey Dean just saw this. I’m not sure if Kurt had biopolar disorder but given his struggles with mental health I wouldn’t be surprised if he did, sad situation for sure. Could you subscribe if you already haven’t by the way? Lot’s more videos to come
Huge Nirvana fan but after a few days of watching various Nirvana clips, I can’t help but raise an eyebrow at the deification.
Not looking for a deal, just hear my sounds.

THAT SHIT WAS DEAD AND BURIED BY 1997 AND NOBODY REALLY FUCKING CARES.
can see your side though i think people are smart enuf that if kurt was hype he wouldn't be as popular as he still seems to be
Cobain would be on my Mt. Rushmore of guitarists who are famously poor players. Not songwriters, but players.
Hey just saw this. That’s one of the cool things about Kurt, he wasn’t a virtuoso but he was still great. Could you subscribe if you already haven’t by the way? Lot’s more videos to come
I learned nothing
He wasn't quiet at all if you knew him but very narcissistic and cynical!!!!
where and when did you meet him?
How were you so sure he was .. did you actually meet him and know him in person ?
Your really weird!!
Better bands maybe but none that made an impact like nirvana
Just curious, what are the better bands that you have in mind from that era?
