I appreciate that woman having the courage to stand in front of all those people and ask a sincere question of her spirit (or ego) or both? :) I needed this. ❤️
I Agree !!!I had the same pattern for Years!! The lady described it Perfectly!Tiresome!..I'm finally awesome of this within myself..and it is freeing to realize it!!I used to Torture myself..Especially sitting on a Beach somewhere in a Hot Country!
People want more than anything to be seen, and yet they are terrified of being seen because they are afraid of what will be seen. And there is so much we want to hide, and yet we have hidden from ourselves that which is best in us.
True, but that is a sense of the teenage years or early adult years. For such self impressions to extend into mature adulthood is definitely the problem. We should move beyond the body only image and move into growth of spirit, soul and self as well as how we deal with others. But you are correct, we can get caught up in our own personal self impressions at any age.
@@coolwater55 Indeed, I agree. That is an insightful reply coolwater 55. I appreciate that. Remaining adolescent even into old age is quite common... This also plays out in other areas of life also. If we have a close look at food, we can understand that beyond our taste buds, of what the egoic mind likes and dislikes, there are foods that deliver energy, and foods that take our energy that are highly addictive. From the standpoint of Natural Hygiene, fresh ripe fruit is considered the optimal food. Yet, many people stay in the adolescent phase of not thinking about what food is going to do them, after they have swallowed it, which leads to all sorts of sickness and disease, that could be avoided by being present. Some call it adolescent, others call it the egoic mind? Still, the present moment remains, it is all we have. Would you say that being present is actually adult consciousness, and constantly identifying with thought is adolescent consciousness? Eckhart, keeps on showing up, week after week, year in, year out, to simply remind us, and help us understand, our unfathomable present moment!
Everybody deeply wants to be understood. But in our environment oftentimes judgment is what we get instead. Probably at the end it's the ego, that fears rejection and seeks validation at the same time. It's gonna be a gamble until you grow out of it.
As a 65 year old I feel exactly the same as I felt as a teenager, except that when I do certain physical things I am reminded the external no longer has the same capabalities.
Really grateful for the honesty of this woman. I have suffered from this all my life, worrying constantly about my looks (weight, prettiness, clothes) is stressing me out so much and now more that ever because I am dating somebody that I really like. This clip came just at the right time...
This is odd becausee the first thought I had when this young woman asked the question, was how beautiful she is. However, the true beauty is the fact that this young woman is becoming aware. This encourages me beyond measure. Thank you, Eckhart Tolle for bringing this awareness to all of us.
I was passing in a very tough time on a personal level and family level as well when i read your book "The power of now" (i chose it randomly from the bookshelf that we have in it more than 200 books), i was also before that moment trapped by a huge unconsciousness, and after that moment, something great started to happen inside me, yea it started because the road is long, but as you always say, the awareness begins once you start noticing that you are aware... i am trying to enhance it continuously, i read your second book "a new earth" and enjoyed it as well, and i am keep listening to your talks on youtube... i can't thank you enough for everything you gave me from awareness and enlightement, and self-peace... i realized that the happiness is inside us and nowhere else... thank you million times, Eckhart
When we shame others, our ego also shames ourselves, grateful for this video. I find that catching ourselves first when we start comparing with others then wishing others well is a powerful habit to weather away the ego
Jiddu Krishnamurti who according to ET influenced his teaching re: awareness used to say Catch the thoughts as they arise and then there is nothing to control.
I think anyone who struggles with that, after following those instructions and start apreciating oneself as a whole being, not only social status, age and appearance, be in touch with God and the spiritual realm, can develop some sort of magical magnetism, a sparkle in the eyes, that more than compensates for those old comparison habits. It's a personal paradigm change.
I can remember when I was seven and my cousin received a big wheel for Christmas. That spring she and I was outside playing when she brought out her big wheel. Being a child I was of course enthralled by this really cool toy! My cousin being a good girl asked me if I’d like a turn on it. I started to get on and my aunt came outside screaming at me to “Get your fat ass off that before you break it!” That was just one time, I remember hundreds of times each and every member of my “friends”, and family enjoyed their fat and/or ugly jokes at my expense. I am not fat anymore but the memories still hurt. The pain never go's away.
To me, the biggest issue with body shaming is society's mental conditioning. Beauty is defined within a very limited range of criteria. And this is emphasized everywhere constantly. Notice how a century or so ago, it was okay for a woman to be full-figured. Aphrodite was a full-figured woman. Over time, women were pressured to look ever thinner. Thus the invention of corsets, girdles, etc. Now body shaming has connected with disease as Citrus Simon suggests. In the drive to obtain unrealistic forms, people, (especially young women), develop unhealthy behaviors such as bulimia, not eating, liquid diets, pills, etc. This identification with the ego can and is deadly. I always remember Karen Carpenter. A beautiful young woman with a beautiful voice, but she eventually ruined her own health and died.
This is very much a teaching for my oldest brother. He is trapped in ego and seems completely unaware of it, even when I tried to gently, softly and kindly point it out to him in a non direct way. He has always been very competitive with me and was always very happy to see me fail and sad when I succeeded. Needless to say, I had to cut ties with him to protect myself.
Everything is a teaching for everyone. I find it best to flip the lens back to myself anytime content makes me think of someone else. Everything is a mirror. All growth comes from within....
When I hear that brothers are moving away, it breaks my heart.I lost a very young sister . Cancer. I would give anything to be able to hug her again. Protecting oneself is being able to hug a brother. Think about it...🙏
I believe Jesus had a very relevant and practical teaching of remove the splinter from your own eye before trying to remove one from another's. Pointing out another person's ego is only your ego resisting its own removal
I catch that same pattern going through my mind at times - when I notice, I tell myself out loud - I am not better than anyone else. I am not worse than anyone else. Not better than, not worse than - we are all one 🙏🏻❤️
Thank you, that used to be an issue of mine. So beautiful to hear this. My Philosophy is this, "Never compare yourself to others, compare yourself to yourself and you'll always be making progress." -Never shame yourself into self hate or eating disorders or anything negative. I think older women can look beautiful and I don’t see them as less pretty than younger. And I couldn’t care a less what anyone else says as it’s my real perception.
I love to see and hear people being the essence of who they are. No matter the age or external appearance, they radiate the truth of beauty rather than the veil of beauty. Both humble and confident, the inner light is one that they can share freely to others without diminishing any of their own brightness. They are illuminated with an eternal Faith in the One universal consciousness 😌🙏✨️🐋
Love the example of how when we may be older that we will not compare because we will see it as the essence of life. It made me think of a baby. A baby I see is perfect but that is not through comparison it's just acceptance. Very fascinating.
Hahhaha yet all most modern women do is compare your body to other men they've been with, the inevitable endless list of massively endowed ex-boyfriends that they bully, body shame and go instantly running back to their friends to publically humiliate your body for things you can neve help or change. True beauty is more than skin deep. Yet women especially (and more and more men) feel they need to paint their faces, put on a mask, compete with others on this most superficial level .... Connecting with the felt sense of what Eckhart calls the "inner body" and enjoying this natural vitality as a portal to Presence .... is one way to directly experiencing true inner beauty

Thank you, Eckhart! If you do not feel beautiful (man or woman) you have the tendency to body shame. A bully (coward) body shames. Body shaming is not a one time deal. A person who body shames is struggling with continual malevolent thoughts until they accept themself. When you accept yourself you realize about others.
