My life is complete
Yooo guys you should make a video together !
Ross please call Sam in as your guest artist for the 10th month!! Sam please be the guest artist!! I'd die hahahha
“ u know what time it is it’s Color- nah I’m just playing. “🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Video collab... PLEASE!
The grayscale method has been a life saver for me because I struggle with color matching and finding the right shades. But since I color everything in gray, then use gradient maps and the adjustment settings after, my shading is much more accurate and realistic because I can focus on values instead of colors.
I'm such a fool for color. I don't know why, but without color picking I somehow never hit the right one. They're always off.
I think I'll try out the painting over grayscale method. This way I only have to choose some colors and the program does the rest. I guess it get's problematic in scenarios with exaggerated lighting and contrast, because you have basically no real hue shift, but I'm far from that anyway.
I think I'll learn this whole grayscale thing again. My art LACKS of contrast and I want to leave semirealism so hard, but no matter what...it all looks flat. And the colors look off too. I can counter some of it by adjusting the colors on my smartphone the way I see them on my graphics tablet...but I feel like I can do better.
Dude can you explain gradient maps to me? I tried a few times but it just seems off when I start applying colors
@@brunv4100 so you can use the presets given, or make adjustments to the colors after the gradient
@@allex_jr8034 oh i meant after applying the gradient map, when i apply color on a new layer the shading doesn't turn out how i want it to. Sorry I'm really new to digital art 😅
That Ross draws reference tho 😂😂

🥺
good person 👌
Do you guys ever paint like this? 👀
me
I do the grayscale a bit different, i copy the image so that i have a backup, then with the lasso tool, I select the parts I want colored then i use a gradiant map to layout the different colours (Check out Marc Brunet, he explained it much more precicely than I did)
Not yet
I‘m too dumb for that :c
i have not tried this before this is terrifying 😂 but i’m in awe of how good it looks!
Wishing for Ross Draws and Sam Does Art collab someday.
It'll be interesting how these two colorful styles merge in one art. 😍
@Constant Kagne he does use color dodge, he just does not yell 'ITS COLOR DODGE TIME' lol
@Constant Kagne oh, ross would probably take care of color dodge lol
@rossdraws please call sam in as the 10th artist!
I was wondering that too
If Sam Does Art and Ross Draws collabed, I feel the world would explode, then implode.
That would be awesome! 💜
0:04 - 0:14 are all my moods in the middle of the night when I can’t sleep 💀
this but when I'm in class
Thank you for taking us through this process in real time. You usually see all these adjustments and gyrations done in 10x time lapse mode, leaving far more questions than answers. You have done a public service here.
Lol the beginning is totally me
I find starting with grayscale gives more control, especially if you're not good with choosing colors. Starting with grayscale first is a hack for making sure your color values are correct because if your values look right in grayscale, your colors are guaranteed to have the right values when you apply them. Along with flipping periodically, if I start with color, I periodically turn the piece to grayscale to make sure the values read correctly. Honestly, it's best to keep an open mind, because one way isn't better than the other all the time. Sometimes if I start a piece in color, then turn it to grayscale when it's almost done, applying colors with the filters gives me a better result.
Doing grayscale, personally, helps in using value first.
I did color only at first, but the colors end up looking too jarring since I don't have value references/underpainting.
Plus, it greatly helps me in painting skin since there's a technique for this method: grisaille.
Love these videos
Your advice really has impacted my art
I am glad
You constantly amaze me just how fast you get your drawings done. And now you do something the first time and still make it look easy. 😲
This is how my husband has always painted, I guess its how he we taught at school, he keeps telling me I should do it this way too. Though,, after watching so many videos where people just paint in color, it's been very hard not to just go straight for color lmao
It's important to use methods that you're comfortable with in your work progress so don't feel forced to use this
You should try coax's technique of you're on photoshop! >> ua-cam.com/video/hVW562drz8I/v-deo.html
Where was this when I needed it for a school art project a week ago ;-; your tips have helped me a lot thank you so much man🖤💠
When I saw this drawing on your Instagram yesterday I was so shocked because this drawing is just so beautiful (in a different way than usual) I was really looking at it for a couple minutes and then saw that you first started out with grayscale. And it was kind of visible that something was different about this drawing than usual. As you said, it does have deeper colors and it also shows that you took more time to work on this piece, so I hope you don’t think that you have wasted your time on this one. 😄 As someone who usually takes at least 10 hours to complete a simple portrait and most of the time struggling to find the right colors, I think this method will speed up my workflow personally and I’m excited to try this out myself. So thank you very much for this amazing video it was her helpful and it would be awesome to see you try out some other methods too. 😄☺️
When I started painting I actually loved using grey scale (in csp it is taking less time) because I wanted to understand light and shadow before focus on color. So it`s pretty useful I think! :)
Looks great! Taking a traditional method like grisaille to digital is a great exercise and definitely produces a subtle shift in color than what we usually expect to see from you
I just love this guy, so much. His videos help me a lot. 😣😭💞💕❤👏👍
And the final painting, looks so beautiful. 😍💙
The result is sooo pretty, wow! 😍😍😍😍 it makes a huge difference! And i think the greyscale method is best utilised when you start to add colour before you finish, like half and half ❤❤❤
Because I was really bad at value, I start to draw from grey first. It's actually help me alot, and now as freelancer I use the method especially drawing for game background/environments.
This is such an amazing video! 😆 thanks Sam! Your getting better at UA-cam i cant w8 to see more of your videos! We're all excited! 🤩🥳
Looks good! I used to exclusively paint in this method before switching to full color painting. I agree with your thoughts, and also find that it takes more time than just straight painting with color
I need to try this! I've been practicing shading and I believe this would help me as I find myself better with shading with greyscale rather than with actual colors.
This was very helpful for someone like me who sucks at colors and is much more comfy starting with black and white and adding color after i do most of the shading
His face expressions are hilarious the first few minutes in. 😂😂😂 Sam your definitely my favorite artist, your way more relaxed and calming when you talk and you explain things way more simpler and clear. You just make everything look so easy and crisp.
She's so pretty, I can't even 🥺 I always find grayscale to color so confusing, it seems like double the work but... I love this.
This video was really helpful! I've never tried Grayscale to colour before for the very same reason - I like to have control over the colours I use. That's why, I usually do my Grayscale portraits & Coloured portraits separately for different pieces
Haha so cool, really useful to start from grayscale sometimes. Makes figuring values out easier. Great video Sam!
I think this might be one of your best. I'm loving it
AAAAAH now I want to try it
btw the end result was sooo pretty💛
I swear the intro is everything, LOL EVERY ART REFERENCE TUTORIAL IS

I'm inspired to do more digi-arts because of your videos! Great work✨
I love the process!!❤️❤️
This is a great method to use to take a break and play around with the tools.
I really love your art, its amazing
I am no digital artist by any means, but you work has got me interested in learning how to become one
Go for it! It’s never too late to learn
Please don't. There are already too many artists in the market
@@LuiZ-jy1pi more are always welcomed though c:
@@LuiZ-jy1pi it doesn't mean they have to become a professional? They can just be a hobby digital artist
@@LuiZ-jy1pi wtf??
I personally only use this method when I don't know what colors I want yet, but know how I want the composition to look. Once I get a light layer of color placed in, I'll then merge and continue painting. So I tend to apply this really early in my paintings, if at all. Most helpful for landscapes.
I actually love this one so so so much!!!
I like your videos when you turned confuse to trying new methods and finally masterpiece created 💝
I was searching for a video with completely different topic and by accident I came across Sam’s video. Watched 1...2...3...of his videos.. and I got hooked up... I even forgot what I supposed to watch in the first place xD So well done Sam! Good content, nice quality, soft drowing style! Keep going!
Color is a great blend mode since it keeps the value of whatever you’re coloring. Afterwards you can use different blend modes for highlights and shading if need be.
looks amazing
I used to do this too because I used to color using a mouse until I got a tablet and learned how to use the Curve tool and putting the layer on top on Overlay. This is pretty cool.
I love your vibe just so freakin much
You actually responded to the request😍😍Thank you so much man, You're the GOAT
Great video! It's a beautiful result in the end, but that black and white drawing though 😍. This one didn't need any coloring at all. Loved the Ross reference 😄
so i just found your at on some chill music and i love it so much, you are so good.
You should try gradient maps for coloring grayscale images.
What I usually do is I put a gradient map on for every different material, so in the end I have one for skin, one for hair, one for white cloth, one for purple cloth etc., that way if you don't like one color you can just afterwards go in and change that one specific color without altering the rest of the image. I also prefer gradient maps over blend modes because you can assign a specific color to a specific value so it gives it a less artificial feel.
I love how you did the hair!!!!
I'm in a stage of learning, where I focus on grayscale only to focus more on the basics. But I'm definitely gonna try this to push my practice paintings to another level later with this method
i use grey scale for values because like everybody else i struggle with color , but once i already laid the colors like a base i start to build up different colors( color harmony) on top of it to make the painting more interesting and pleasing to the eye
Mr sam ,saw your video first time though ive seen the art on reddit ..i like your humor and energy.! especially the color dodge joke. cracked me up. and nice style..its beautiful..imma sub
You are a whole mood lol
thank u i am flattered
I'll be honest.. sometimes I just like playing you in the background, even if I'm doing something else. There's something about your voice: it's so soothing! XD
Amazing and great work
Your paintings are amazing and famous
I wish you progress and prosperity🙏💙✨
Even i don't do digital painting still watching this cause is much better to find technique and style on how they do their thing and maybe can inspire my medium
I luvvv ur artttt
The editing on this was really good
I actually started with this method when first started doing digital art. I didn't have stylus with pressure sensitivity so I would do my drawings traditionally in black and white ink wash or pencil and apply the colors digitally with with a mouse and keyboard.
I think this method also works really well when planning a large or detailed illustration since it allows you to plan your values so easily. You can maintain an effective light/dark composition while adding color which has historically been an issue of mine XD
When I was in school this was the workflow that was being taught, thank goodness I'm in 3D!
Superb video. Many thanks!!
I have used this method when coloring pencil sketches
Your tutorial helped me
I've always really enjoyed the grayscale to color method because I have chronic migraines, and having the blue light filter on during most of the process is a lifesaver to me. Anyone who has tried to do a color painting and then turned blue light off knows exactly what I mean lmao.
I will definitely try this!
i work exclusively in this method. The only difference is that I used a series of gradient maps for the coloring. The skin usually gets three stacked maps (skin tones, below the skin blood and purples).
I love ur video they are pretty much help full😊😊
The rossdraws imitation 😂 I'm wheezing. It's like hearing a song and then singing it and your like😯😕 I sound awful.
I use grey scale if I’m unsure about the forms like body anatomy etc, but when I’m pretty confident with something I’ll go straight to colour, like clothes
damn HOW CAN YOU BE SO GOOD?
Good job!!I like it!
oooh this was super helpful thankyou!!
I would love to see an artcollab between Sam and Ross
I bet the final painting would look gorgeous
Awesome video as always thanks. 😊🙏
11:34 every time I pass a test I didn't study for, once again you've done it again man🥲
Thank you mate!!
Amazing! And she's gorg
This style is so hard for me 😢 you made it look so easy. 💕💕
The whole video I could not stop laughing around 😂 but the drawing and painting is sooo great 😊
There is a way to do it quite easier and much faster, saw this method in Coax's videos (he's an south korean artist). You just select the needed part of the painting (skin for example), then you copy it on another layer (just for safety) and change colors with ctrl+b, ctrl+m, ctrl+u tools (can't remember all of their names, sry). It is actually really fast and looks good, and of course you can add some few more layers in different modes like multiply etc, but it's not really needed. Basically you can do it all with ctrl+b (in photoshop). Hope It will help someone who thinks that turning greyscale into color is hard. However I advice just check Coax's video about "Glazing" technique. However, amazing video!
Problem is this method just isn’t specific enough for some art, but it works
@@roooster7681 I agree, that's why I usually turn b/w into color not on the final stage but like halfway through or so. It's like making sure that you got your values right and then working on. I believe in the beginning of this video, Sam was watching Dave's Greco tutorial and he mostly does the same thing, just a little differently.
Hi Sam! It's my first time using Photoshop and I barley know the controls! I tried messing up the controls but it made it worse sadly, but it's fine, it restarted, i hope one day youll make a video about Photoshop for beginners, looking forward for seeing it!
Damn,....My self esteem as an artists dropping.....This work was awesome
This is really helpful for colorblind people.
i have watched some videos about grayscale tutorial but your video is much easier to follow even this is your first time to use it lol
ahh i wish Sam would try this again but using gradient map at the beginning instead, i feel like it can help a lot with the artificial feeling and the muted grayish colors
Who else would super enjoy Sam trying to paint traditionally?
i died when he said it's color dodge time lmao
love your work! I love drinking coffee and watching your videos while I get ready to draw ♥
you can also just hold alt/option and tap/click the bottom of the layer to clip the layer to the layer below it.
You did an amazing job with this! I wouldn’t have known it started in grayscale if you hadn’t show the video. Definitely agree that it’s easier to do in color first, but this is a good exercise. Just found you tonight, and I’m a big fan of your style (and blown away by how fast you work). Incidentally, is there a place where you’re selling this particular image? I looked on “inprnt” and gumroad and didn’t see it anywhere. You’ve got a lot of great pieces, but I really like this one aheckuva lot. :) Thanks for sharing!
I did this too and I was impressed
nice method, i will try when i have the time.
