  • I've been after one of these for a while - With this unit you can do readings down to 0.5% accuracy and they're used as the base calibration standard for many of the other HP RF Power Meters.
    Let's take a quick look it.

    Thanks so much for the videos on the repair of the 432 power meter. Mine had the same symptoms as yours. I was just getting ready to check my power supply voltages just before watching your video. I found my 100 uF capacitor was bad, just as yours was! I have one on order, but I think I have a pretty good handle on it thanks to your video!!

    Pretty darn close if you ask me. Might have to pick up one of these meters. I have a 437B and absolutely love it.

      The 437B is a great meter - I love the fact that you can store the cal settings for the sensor in that meter and just recall them based on the frequency - Much prefer it to the 436, though I do have a 435 because it is just a classic format (like the 432 here).
      The challenge with these meters is not the actual meter itself but in getting the 478A Thermistor Mount, that is really where the money is. In my case, I think I managed to acquire it from someone who just wanted to be rid of it so it was substantially cheaper than others. Still works though.

    I purchased one of these also as a replacement for my 431 which is getting long in the tooth. The 431 still works, but it had some issues...mainly when trying to zero it, jumps all over the place and goes nutso. I haven't really bothered to look into it to see if this is just a cleaning issue with a pot. I can use the the older 478 thermistor mount with the 432 just fine.

      I just picked up a 431C in an auction score - It seems to work but isn't anywhere near accurate so I have to get back to it to try and either adjust or repair. I also have a 478A that I use - I'm looking for one with the 1.05 SWR at 50 MHz so I can check 1mW power references appropriately.

    Looks like a real nice piece of kit. Have you done a video on that RF generator you are using?

      The 8657B? I don't think so - I'm getting a set of instrument cabinets this weekend and will be putting my test gear into them. I should have an 8657B, 8672A, 8673B and an 8663A - I may try to do a video showing them all.

    I always try to leave the original (or previous) owner tags on my gear. I have a lot of McDonnell Douglas gear, Mayo Clinic gear, Texas Instruments (owned) gear, etc. It adds character.

      I'm with you - I do like showing where they came from but I will remove any sticker that is partial or marked up - I'm going to leave the Oregon DMT on it because that just rocks...

    I have a question. Can a device like this be used to measure the strength of RF waves from local mobile phone antennas, or neighbours' WiFi base stations?

    • @tgsoapbox
      @tgsoapbox  5 років тому +1

      Technically yes but these are broadband devices and they're going to have a lower limit to the reading (e.g. -30 dBm for example). The 8400 series will go down to -70 dBm but they're still broadband devices. To do what you're looking at you'd be better off with something like an 8902A measuring Receiver or an 8960 series communications tester I think.

      @@tgsoapbox Thanks so much for your answer! That's a shame, the devices you mentioned cost several grand. I bought a cheap EMF tester for about £30 and was hoping to get an RF one for a similar price! I guess not LOL Thanks anyway :-)

    I've just purchased an RMS volt meter in the same series. (HP400E)

      I have one of those as well - I just love the form factor that HP used on these devices.

    I think the meter calibration will be fairly nonlinear in the vertical position.

    • @tgsoapbox
      @tgsoapbox  6 років тому

      Oh I completely agree - I should have pointed that out but I did this orientation so I didn't need to move my camera - Since then I've bought another camera and tripod so I can record both overhead and front on at the same time.

    Ohhh! So that’s what step attenuators are for! Have you tried HP’s precision surface-to-unit elevators? I think model #8008Y?

    • @tgsoapbox
      @tgsoapbox  3 роки тому +1

      Yep - They're a nice little step for dodging the power cable (others may actually use them for attenuation...)

    I have one of these meters and when I turn it on, it pegs the meter in the negative direction and the Coarse Zero does not adjust it up any. Ideas anyone?

      Start by checking the power rails. I did a somewhat long series on fixing one of my 432A's that might be worth a watch.
      If you don't already have it, grab the manuals from ArtekManuals.com, great quality scans

      This is the first video - It seems to have the same problem that you were having - Take a look and let me know how it goes for you. ua-cam.com/video/oVKNVzdx3N0/v-deo.htmlsi=D4Or08jMA3fESLMV&t=269
