  • Not my typical video, just a look behind the scenes. I'm an amateur piano technician. Don't try this at home!

The difference is startling. Its about time people got more hands on and connected with their own instrument. I tuned my own piano for years and it was easy with an electronic tuner. It sounded great to my perfect pitch ears. So handy when just one note is off. Many people neglect keeping up with minor maintenance because of the ludicrous cost of many piano technicians. Then there is a humidity change and BAM....call the tech again.
I've often found many so called great pianos (especially Yamaha) unbearably hard above middle C. I think they are aiming for a brilliant/bright sound so people trying to play technically difficult pieces sound better but its just horribly hard, unfeeling and glaringly bright. We all can't have on hand a German Steinways or other magnificently crafted instrument when we feel like it. Thank you for your video. I can't believe its got only 7000 views. The world is not fair at all.

My upright has got hammers refaced and I think it was a bad idea (and I even said so to the technician) Now I am stuck with a tone which is way too bright for my taste. And by the way any inharmonicity can be heard much more disturbing. The sound is shrill, not just brassy. I have tried to soften the upper register (c5-c6) by doing needling, but so far very cautious and experimenting. The only advice I got is "trust your ears".
I began to wonder if the piano technician has an ear damage since he hears things differently.

What would you do if you have notes certain keys that are darker than other. How you can make the sound of those keys brighter. Thanks

A new aspect of your talents. I will not try at home with my Steinway.

I've practiced and experimented with lots of older pianos where i couldn't make things worse than they already were...so I felt pretty confident that I could improve the tone without doing any damage. I did a lot of work on my old 1926 Steinway before I sold it but I sure wouldn't be messing around with a good one.

lol there is another experience voicer on YT that says before he will needle a hammer he will sand it, leaving just the top groove marks, then reevaluate.
