This is an insanely sentimental song for many Polish people. It is about love that a young man feels for his sweetheart, the longing to be with her and the extent to which he is willing to go to achieve that. It was a staple of absolutely every Polish dance party for decades. Still is. There is just something in his voice that melts hearts :) Many a young Polish person experienced their first kiss or first love to the tune of this song. I am almost 40 but I still remember how I was awkwardly asking girls to dance with me to this song during summer camps in the 90s. When this song was playing no girl ever refused even thou I was a fat fu*k back then :D

Yeah, but it's also about a longing for the youthful days (and nights) and for the passionate love of those long gone times. That's what makes it so sentimental, that feeling that this time is gone, things are not that straightforward any more, passions not that simple.

I'd say it's about lost youth, or the longing for lost youth... Funny enough they were in their early 30s when they wrote the song

Oh man... It's a song about a love affair a guy has with another man's wife who works abroad. The protagonist remembers the fling now years later and while admiting what they did was wrong, his memories of unfaithful Jolka are fond nevertheless.
Dziecko spało za ścianą, czujne jak ptak
      Niechaj Bóg wyprostuje mu sny!
The kid slept in the other room
      Vigilant like a bird
May God set his dreams straight!
Whose child do you think the song refers to? Tip: not the protagonist's but Jolka's hubby saving up all his earnings in GBP so he may buy a frighteningly beautiful Toyota car.
Dud you miss the part about 'your husband', the fiancee and the bus full of ?

Great song ! Here is the lyrics:
Jolka, Jolka, do you remember that summer of dreams, When you kept writing: “I feel so bad Come to me even right now, do something with me, Don’t leave me here alone, oh no." Still begging for petrol, I raced through the night, The engine groaned with the last of its strength, To be in you again, to laugh and to swear, Everything was so simple those days. A child slept behind the wall, watchful as a bird, May God sweeten his dreams! You told me that never, never before Have your tears been as sweet as blood. In the morning I emigrated away from your arms, The day drove me out, at night I returned once again. The eclipse of the sun was destined for us, The next one will happen, maybe in a hundred years. The nuns walked along the beach, and the sun going down, It kept falling, unable to fall. Your husband out in the world saved up every pound, For a Toyota, so beautiful, it's sad. Your husband loved order and a full glass, He once had a fiancée like a dream, She betrayed him with a bus full of Arabs, He was never himself again, oh no. In the morning I emigrated away from your arms, The day drove me out, at night I returned once again. The eclipse of the sun was destined for us, The next one will happen, maybe in a hundred years. We lived in a big bathtub and so rarely We crawled out onto the dry land, The Fairy Booze Godmother danced within us, Shooting gallery* was two steps away. I still don't know why it started like that, Why it faded - no one knows either, There are still many around me, I don't wake up alone, But nothing is simple these days.

Let's start with the name, Jola is pretty mych equivalent to Yolanda, and Yoli is short for Yolanda,so it should go something like: Yoli, Yoli, remember the Summer of dreams? When you wrote me, "I'm so miserable. Get away, even right now, do something with me, don't leve me here by myself. Oh no!". Always begging for fuel, I raced through the night, engine wheezing with last of it's might. To be in you again, to laugh and to curse, things were all so simple those days

    Some information about that Festival:
    1) Americans forced the Foundation who runs the Festival to change the name of the Festival from "Przystanek Woodstock" (Woodstock Stop) to "Pol'n'Rock Festival"
    2) The Festival is run by the "Wielka Orkiestra Świątecznej Pomocy" (The Great Orchestra of Christmas Charity) which every year runs a charity festival in the Winter across all of Poland, even the smallest villages and by now its our Polish national tradition to participate in it. This is what peak Civil Society looks like
    3) Both festivals are run by volunteers (this includes the stewards, security, medics, pretty often artists too etc)
    4) Its completely free. No reservations or tickets required. Of course you need to pay for your drinks and food tho
    5) Its a multiday festival. In this particular 2014 edition 750 thousand people participated in the celebration of love without boundries (everyone is welcome, no matter what your religion, political background, nationality, gender or sexual preferences are, you are always welcome).
    6) Its way more than just a music festival. There are educational and discussion panels with celebrities, politicians, artists, even Noble Prize winners like in the 2014 edition Muhammad Yunus from Bangladesh (Noble Peace Prize) had panel and 2 of our polish noblists - Lech Wałęsa (Noble Peace Prize winner) and Olga Tokarczuk (Noble Prize in literature) had their panels respectively in 2015 and 2019. You can also participate in plenty of workshops starting from art and ending in life saving.
    7) Its not only Polish bands and artists. There are plenty very famous international bands that took part in the festival like Papa Roach, Metallica, The Prodigy, Die Toten Hosen, Machine Head, Sabaton, Damian Marley, Anthrax, Black Label Society, Shaggy, House of Pain and so on.
The overwhelming majority of Polish people consider both festivals our national treasure and a lot of people are calling for a Noble Peace Prize for the foundation due to its outstanding impact on establishing and cultivating an unmatched Civil Society as Russias invasion of Ukraine has proven where approximately a couple millions of Polish People actively participated in the relief operation for the Ukrainian refugees (more than 5 million Ukrainian refugees entered Poland and so for right now its estimated that around 1.3 million Ukrainian refugees are still sheltered by our society - Poland has 38 million citizens btw). You could see in comment sections of videos about the Ukrainian refugee crisis that foreigners from around the world are demanding a Noble Peace Prize for the Polish society (its not up to me to judge we deserve or not, also it kind of silly to give an entire society a prize). Of course thats flattering, but that would be to much, especially since every society has its bad apples.
Anyway. If you have the ability to travel to Europe coming to the Pol'a"Rock Festival is a really good idea. All you need (beside tickets for the flight, other transportation and food) is a tent (thats most peoples accommodation for the Festival and there are prepaired places for that on the Festival area).

Budka Suflera - a band founded in Lublin in 1974 by Krzysztof Cugowski and Romuald Lipka. Known for such hits as: "Dream about the valley", "For the last penny", "Jolka Jolka, you remember", "Takie Tango" or "Ball of All Saints". The band has released 25 studio and live albums. Suflera's booth - a booth where a prompter used to sit and advise actors on the theater stage. Some interesting facts for you :)
The main vocalist here is Felicjan Andrzejczak, he was in the band for less than two years back in 80s, but he recorded this legendary song with them. For the most of band's history (and during this concert) Krzysztof Cugowski was the main singer, you can see him in sunglasses at 6:33. And those two young guys to the right, vocalist and guitarist, are Cugowski's sons. And long haired keyboardist is Romuald Lipko, he wrote like half or more of old Polish hits, not only for Budka Suflera, but for many, many famous Polish singers. He passed away in 2020 sadly, but will always be remembered as an absolute legend of Polish music!

I 'm curious how Felicjan Andrzejczak felt while singing this song. I wonder what it's like when, thirty or so years after creating a song, in a completely different reality, a completely different generation gathered in incredible numbers sings with you and knows every word of it. I think he might have thought at the time that this moment was worth living for.

It also portrays the grim reality of the 1980s in Poland and the pursuit of unattainable dreams. Many generations have grown up with this song, so it holds a special place for them.

    Jolka, Jolka pamiętasz
    /
    Lyrics
Jolka, Jolka, you remember the summer from your dream
Jolka, Jolka, pamiętasz lato ze snu
When you wrote, "I feel so bad
    Gdy pisałaś: "Tak mi źle
    Get off right away
    Urwij się choćby zaraz
    Do something with me
    Coś ze mną zrób
Don't leave here alone, oh no"
Nie zostawiaj tu samej, o nie"
    Still begging for gas
    Żebrząc wciąż o benzynę
    I ran through the night
    Gnałem przez noc
The engine was wheezing at its last
    Silnik rzęził ostatkiem sił
    To be in you again
    Aby być znowu w Tobie
    Laugh and curse
    Śmiać się i kląć
Everything was so simple these days
Wszystko było tak proste w te dni
The baby was sleeping behind the wall
    Dziecko spało za ścianą
    Alert as a bird
    Czujne jak ptak
    May God straighten his dreams!
    Niechaj Bóg wyprostuje mu sny!
You said never, never like that
Powiedziałaś, że nigdy, że nigdy aż tak
Your tears were as sweet as blood
Słodkie były, jak krew Twoje łzy
I emigrated from your embrace in the morning
Emigrowałem z objęć Twych nad ranem
The day drove me away, at night I came back again
Dzień mnie wyganiał, nocą znów wracałem
We were given a solar eclipse
    Dane nam było, słońca zaćmienie
The next one will be, maybe in a hundred years
Następne będzie, może za sto lat
Nuns were walking along the beach, and the sun was down
Plażą szły zakonnice, a słońce w dół
It kept falling, unable to fall
    Wciąż spadało nie mogąc spaść
Husband out there in the pound-pound world, putting down the pound
Mąż tam w świecie za funtem, odkładał funt
For a Toyota, they're beautiful, so scary
    Na Toyotę przepiękną, aż strach
Your husband adored order and full glass
Mąż Twój wielbił porządek i pełne szkło
He had a fiancée once, like a dream
    Narzeczoną miał kiedyś, jak sen
She cheated on him with the Arab bus
    Z autobusem Arabów zdradziła go
He was never himself again, oh no
Nigdy nie był już sobą, o nie
I emigrated from your arms in the morning
Emigrowałem z ramion Twych nad ranem
The day drove me away, at night I came back again
Dzień mnie wyganiał, nocą znów wracałem
We were given a solar eclipse
    Dane nam było, słońca zaćmienie
The next one will be, maybe in a hundred years
Następne będzie, może za sto lat
We lived in a big bathtub and rarely did
W wielkiej żyliśmy wannie i rzadko tak
    We crawled onto dry land
    Wypełzaliśmy na suchy ląd
The sorceress of booze danced in us
    Czarodziejka gorzałka tańczyła w nas
The finish line was two steps away
Meta była o dwa kroki stąd
I still don't know why it started like this
Nie wiem ciągle dlaczego zaczęło się tak
No one knows why it died
Czemu zgasło też nie wie nikt
They're still different around me, I don't wake up alone
Są wciąż różne koło mnie, nie budzę się sam

Interesting reaction, man - thanks. “Jolka” is a popular girl’s name in Poland (Jolanta =Yolanda) and “Jolka”, can be pronounced [Yolkah]
The song was hard to translate as it is very poetical and besides of this, Polish words are longer. But I translated it for you, so you could know what it’s about. Yet my translation is not suitable for singing, sorry…
Btw., Here is the original version, when they were in their twenties: ua-cam.com/video/Kyj0gPZV07I/v-deo.html
    -------
    Yolkah, Yolkah (Yolanda, Yolanda)
Can you remember that summer from dreams
When you wrote me: "I feel so bad"
Get off right away, do something to me
Don't leave me here alone, please don’t
    Constantly begging for some gas
    I raced through the night
The engine roared with all its might
To be in you again! To laugh and swear…
Everything was so simple those days
Baby was sleeping behind the wall
    As watchful as a bird.
    May God straighten its dreams
You told me that never ever before
Were your tears as sweet as blood
In the mornings I used to emigrate from your embrace
Days drove me away, nights used to bring me back to you
We were given a solar eclipse
The next one will come, maybe in a hundred years
Some nuns were walking along the beach, and the sun was setting down, but somehow couldn’t
Your husband out there tried saving pound after a pound
For Toyota - beautiful as a dream
    He loved order and wine
He once had a fiancée, like a dream
She cheated on him in a coach full of Arabs
He was never himself again, oh no
In the mornings I used to emigrate from your embrace
Days drove me away, nights kept bringing me back to you
A solar eclipse was given to us
The next one may come in a hundred years time.
On a big farm we lived, rarely stepped out onto dry land
    Magical Booze danced in us,
A taphouse was two steps away
I still don't know why it started like this
And why it died down - no one knows
Some are still by me, and I don't wake up alone any more
But nothing is as simple these days

Pretty good! But not "finish line" only "taphouse" or "watering hole" or whatever other translation you want for a "meta", i.e. a place selling illegal, usually made-on-premises spirits (hooch, shine, moon, etc, ie "bimber"). Colloquially called "meta" or finish-line in Polish, because you rarely got any further than that place 😊

One thing I can add here to these comments: almost every single person who was there in the crowd was born at least 10 years after this song was realesed. But because it is so great, and because if you play on the guitar, it is one of the "must-know-how-to-play".
My dad (who was born in 1960's) was really suprised, that so many young people can sing it a cappella without band's vocalist :)

As the title of this song, it is YOLKA, YOLKA. It is a diminutive form of the name "Jolanta" - Yolanda, which comes from greek name "Iolanthe".

    Jolka, Jolka pamiętasz
    /
    Lyrics
Jolka, Jolka, pamiętasz lato ze snu
    Gdy pisałaś: "Tak mi źle
    Urwij się choćby zaraz
    Coś ze mną zrób
Nie zostawiaj tu samej, o nie"
    Żebrząc wciąż o benzynę
    Gnałem przez noc
    Silnik rzęził ostatkiem sił
    Aby być znowu w Tobie
    Śmiać się i kląć
Wszystko było tak proste w te dni
    Dziecko spało za ścianą
    Czujne jak ptak
    Niechaj Bóg wyprostuje mu sny!
Powiedziałaś, że nigdy, że nigdy aż tak
Słodkie były, jak krew Twoje łzy
Emigrowałem z objęć Twych nad ranem
Dzień mnie wyganiał, nocą znów wracałem
    Dane nam było, słońca zaćmienie
Następne będzie, może za sto lat
Plażą szły zakonnice, a słońce w dół
