In the game it was really a turn the game off moment for players... Winter am I right? After Joel passes out from his injury the next chapter starts and you are playing as Ellie. It was literally a throwing the controller against the wall moment. The DLC, Left Behind, was Ellie's story during flashbacks of trying to save his life. Also, the next episode was one of the things game players were wondering how it was gonna be handled and the TV show did a good job with the subject matter.
Back when this came out, homophobes were grasping at every straw to hate on this episode by pretending it was an issue of portraying children in sexual scenarios and glorifying underage drinking. 🙄 Even though sitcoms and movies depict far more scandalous interactions between teens and didn't care when examples were provided. Even though Joel, a grown man, gave Ellie, an underaged girl, alcohol the previous episode. Just really disingenuous attempts to complain. You could tell because they'd complain about "woke" as well, which is code for complaining about equality for anyone different.
