Decolonising Permaculture with Principle Zero | Rosemary Morrow in Conversation with Sarah Queblatin

- All permaculture design begins with 'Observe and Interact', but even this step doesn't taking into consideration the history of the land, its peoples and their traditions.
Sarah Queblatin, co-founder of Green Releaf Initiative and the Living Story Landscape, believes all designing should take place through the lens of Principle 0, where local knowledge and wisdom is acknowledged.
Here Sarah talks with permaculture teacher, Rosemary Morrow, about Principle 0 and how this simple reframing can decolonise permaculture, reconnecting land with its ancestors and ensuring that indigenous people are included in decision making.

I'm glad Permaculture Magazine is addressing this issue. I'd like to see the exploration of this subject expanded. The permaculture movement in the UK is too often the domain of the white middle class. Have you considered a feature on the Dig It Out campaign?
Permaculture will not change the world until everyone is included. Thank you for the suggestion. We will check this out.

Tire insight i gained from your conversation was twofold.
1. The Principle of Intrinsic Value should be placed at the top of our minds when working with any environment
2. I believe we are missing a Principle. Not certain what to call it, but something around Gaining Consent Before Taking Action.
This is a tough one because it requires deep listening and the ability to hear the wisdom in ones own heart and place it over our long held belief of putting resources over natural consciousness.
But we are coming along as a species. I believe it’s possible. ❤️
Care for the Earth, care for people. Keep it simple. Plant, nurture, love, harvest, share, repeat.
It is very difficult to consider the history and background of a place. History is long, goes back many centuries. During that long time many different people(s) with different religious backgrounds and beliefs lived there. How can you take all that in consideration? Including the current generations who live there (in that region)
Difficult - so don't try? Difficult - so don't imagine? Difficult - so don't learn?
Permaculture the knowledge of came from indigenous cultures from all over the world. Bill just left out the spiritual aspect of what he learned. I am a pagan it is easy to put the spiritual back into permaculture it is what I do.
In my opinion Bill made a good choice to leave religion out. Permaculture is for everyone, no matter what religious background. As soon as you put any religious thought in, there will be people who feel 'left out', because they have different beliefs. 'Spiritual' doesn't have an identical meaning to everyone.
@Karla Arnold What is paganism ? It is define by everything that is not Christian or jewish, it seems pretty wide especially concedering the diversity of spiritual practices in the world. Maybe are you talking about cultural appropriation or "New age" ?
I agree 100% with Inge on Bill's decision, the same apply on his choice to keep the teaching of permaculture decentralized and democratic in opposition to hierarchal University structure.

Seems to me that Permaculture has its schools and authorities. It's taught in a structured way and upon pass of examination at the end given a certificate.
This is not an issue of indigenous people and decolonisation… this is an issue of rediscovering traditional methods of living, pre industrial revolution. Please stop acting like this is an issue of race.. There is no need to segregate people and their ideas.
If we treat permaculture as a science of sustainable and productive living, where we are free to be inspired regardless of our origins, we will learn much faster..
This racialisation of a science is just going to get in the way of productivity.
who cares if somebody acknowledges or respects you? What do you actually gain from it? It won’t give you good soil, or make up your fruit trees more productive. Victimising yourself isn’t going to achieve anything but feed your own ego..
You could invest your time into teaching the world practical knowledge you have acquired from your culture rather than complaining about your perceived lack of acknowledgement…
I’m sorry if this comes across as harsh or rude, that is not my intention.
I just don’t believe that what you are doing benefits society. If anything, categorising people like this actually does the opposite..it breeds division.
Focus on the science. Knowledge should have no boundaries.
